The lively atmosphere of the event instantly exploded into chaos.
"He's got an eight-year-old son? What has Miss Sloan been doing these past seven years?Charity work?"
"He just denied it a few days ago!Typical.Men lie as easily as they breathe."
Accusations poured in from all directions, drowning Thomas. His face turned pale."You…you knew?"
I nodded calmly.
"Everyone has a past.I can accept that you have a child.I can even accept that your child is sick and help you develop targeted medication for him."
"But none of this should've come out like this. Not after I personally oversaw the entire renovation of our wedding home. Not in front of everyone in the most humiliating way."
"You had seven whole years to come clean. You had countless chances, but you never told me."
As the truth unraveled, even the reporters began to look at me with sympathy.
"Seven years of dating, happily preparing for a wedding and then she finds out her fiancéhas an eight-year-old son?How do you even begin to move on from that?"
"And worse,he's been tangled up with his secretary this whole time.Disgusting."
Thomas stumbled, nearly falling to the ground.
He opened his mouth to defend himself, but to his dismay,he couldn't refute a single word I'd said.
I stepped down from the stage and tossed a stack of intimate photos of him and Jennie at his feet.
"Thomas, now it's my turn to speak."
"We.Are.Done."
With that,I lifted the hem of my dress and turned on my heel, head held high.
Thomas tried to chase after me,but the reporters blocked his path.
A barrage of sharp questions rained down on him like a blizzard.
Just as he'd wanted,he was the center of the press conference.
Jennie tried to slip away in the chaos but was dragged back. Her ending wasn't much better than his.
As for me,I walked away without a hitch and slid into Jeremy's Maybach.
He followed right after, his eyes locked on me,burning with intensity.
I felt deeply apologetic."I'm sorry. It seems I ruined your press conference."
However,Jeremy didn't seem to care."Are you really done with Thomas?"
I turned my face away and gave a soft"mm."
The person I had loved for seven years was so disgraceful.Even with such a fierce breakup,I couldn't immediately pretend nothing had happened.
Jeremy chuckled."Sharon,well done."
I looked at him, confused."But today's news will definitely be all about him.No one will report on the targeted drugs."
After all,the allure of gossip far outweighed that of medicine.
Jeremy didn't care at all."You getting rid of Thomas is the best thing that happened today.Everything else is irrelevant."
I didn't quite understand his logic.
Jeremy reached out and gently patted my head."You were wonderful today. Here's a reward for you."
The car drove out of the city and stopped half an hour later.
As soon as I got out,I was stunned.
Before my eyes stretched,an endless industrial park with beautiful scenery went on as far as I could see.
Most importantly,a sign high above the main gate reads,"Sloan Research Institute."
Jeremy said,"From now on,freely pursue what you want to do."
I was so astonished that I couldn't speak for a long time.
Jeremy asked with a hint of nervousness,"What's wrong?Don't you like it?"
I had dreamed of having my own research institute.
I loved it to bits!
Still…
"Uncle Jeremy, this is too much.I can't accept it."
Jeremy's reasoning was sound."Talent is priceless."
"Don't think you're getting off easy. You'll be working hard for me in here from now on."
He lowered his head slightly as he spoke and his cologne's pleasant, woody scent enveloped me.
"Also,do you like calling me'Uncle Jeremy'that much?"
His magnetic voice was dangerously close and my heart skipped a beat.I blurted out,"I want to go inside and take a look."
Jeremy agreed and took me a set of comfortable clothes from the car.
I changed out of my formal dress and we went in together.
The research institute was larger than I had imagined and all the equipment was state-of-the-art.
What surprised me even more was that half of the decorative paintings hanging on the walls were actually worked by my late mother.
"Some still haven't been found,but it'll be soon.Just wait a little longer,Sharon."
I was stunned once again,a mix of emotions swirling within me.
We wandered around until dark, finally finishing our tour of the institute.
Jeremy crouched down in front of me.
I was puzzled.
He said naturally,"You used to always whine for me to carry you when you were tired.Forgot?"
My face flushed red."That was all when I was a kid!"
He used to visit my house often, taking me out to play everywhere.I would get tired after walking a short distance and act spoiled, asking him to carry me.
He never refused and would even joke about carrying me for the rest of my life.
So many years had passed in a flash.I no longer had the nerve for that.
Jeremy stood up and sighed with exaggerated regret."What a pity."
