After that day,Thomas became completely unhinged.
His injuries hadn't healed yet,but he still came to my house looking for me.
When I refused to see him,he just stood downstairs, refusing to leave.
One night, the rain poured down and the pitch-black darkness was illuminated by flashes of lightning. He stood there like a ghost.
I abruptly shut the curtains, wanting to block him out of sight and out of mind.
The next morning, sure enough,he passed out downstairs.
Jeremy's bodyguard asked me,"Miss Sloan, should we take him to the hospital?"
I said no.
If he liked to ruin himself, let him destroy himself to the end.
Even if he died,it had nothing to do with me.
Still,Thomas had a frighteningly strong will to live.
Even with infected wounds and a fever,he pulled through after a few days in the hospital. He was still alive, but his mental state was visibly worse.
With the bodyguard around,he couldn't get close to me anymore,so he changed his tactics.
He bought banners with huge characters that read"I'm sorry"and"I love you,"and shouted my name from afar.
He didn't stop there. He handwrote 999 apology letters, sending one daily through local express delivery to the research institute.
He said,"If I finish sending all the letters and you still haven't forgiven me,I'll give up."
I didn't even know what to say.
Instead,I called the police and reported him for harassment.
When they took him away, his eyes were full of pain."Sharon,do you really hate me that much?"
I answered without hesitation,"Yes."
Just like that,he finally quieted down…for a while.
Until Jeremy proposed to me.
It was a clear and sunny evening.Jeremy said a new restaurant had just opened downtown and he wanted to take me there to try it out.
When we arrived,I realized the place was filled with flowers and a live orchestra. It looked more like a wedding than a restaurant opening.
I blinked in surprise."Wow,they really went all out with the decorations for opening day."
Jeremy nodded seriously."You can tell the owner has good taste."
I asked casually,"How do you know the owner?"
He raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything.
That's when it clicked."Wait, you're the owner!"
He didn't confirm it,but didn't deny it either. Then he said,"No other restaurant would be worth all this effort."
A strange feeling crept over me."So,this is…"
Jeremy gave a small, almost sheepish sigh."A proposal. Was it that hard to tell?"
My mouth fell open in shock.
Then he got down on one knee in front of me.
"It's a little cliché,but I still want to say it.Sharon,I've loved you for a very long time."
"I know you were hurt in your last relationship.I just hope I can be the one to help you heal."
"I'm not afraid if your love for me isn't strong at first,as long as it lasts.I'll make up for whatever's missing."
"I'm a few years older than you.I hope the heavens are kind and let me live a bit longer. So,I can go after you,so you won't have to go through another goodbye."
He looked at me with eyes full of unwavering devotion.
His words were soft and steady, like a prayer from someone who truly worships you.
Tears streamed down my face.I covered my mouth, unable to speak through my sobs.
He frowned in frustration."Baby,I didn't say all this to make you cry."
I laughed through my tears.
Then he pulled out a ring from his pocket."So,Miss Sharon Sloan."He said with a smile,"Will you marry me?"
Still crying,I nodded hard."Yes,yes,I will!"
He stood up and carefully slid the ring onto my finger.
He was so nervous and excited that he fumbled a few times before finally getting it on.
Then he lifted my hand and kissed my knuckles.
At that moment, fireworks lit the sky outside and drones formed my name.
Lights and fireworks intertwined, forming a grand confession.
I leaned into his arms and felt a tangible happiness.
