The sharp scent of disinfectant filled my nose.
I opened my eyes and a cold, calloused hand pressed gently against my forehead.
Jeremy's voice came from beside the bed."Sharon, you're finally awake."
I pushed myself up slowly. My body still felt like it had been scorched by flames.
Jeremy poured me a glass of water."Are you still feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"
I took a moment to check in with myself, then admitted honestly,"My chest feels tight."
"That's from inhaling too much smoke,"he explained."You'll be fine after a few days of rest."
I nodded, drank the water and lay back down again.
Jeremy sat quietly at my side, repeatedly running his fingers through my hair.
His dark eyes held a depth I couldn't ignore.
I could see that fear clearly.Fear that he'd almost lost me.
I wrapped his hand in mine, offering a small smile."I'm okay now."
He gave me a soft"mm,"then suddenly leaned over and hugged me tightly.
So tight it made my bones ache.
I didn't say a word.I just let him hold me for five whole minutes.
"Where's Thomas?"I finally asked.
Jeremy said he was in the ICU.
He'd been badly burned.
The bodyguards and Jeremy had found me first. When they saw the fire blazing, they called the fire department.
Jeremy couldn't wait for the firefighters;he rushed into the blaze and brought me out.
Thomas was a few minutes behind and got caught in the blaze.
He ended up staying in the hospital for nearly two months. The day he was discharged,he was arrested.
I was the one who filed the lawsuit.I accused him of kidnapping and attempted murder.
With a disfigured face,Thomas cursed me for being ruthless and ungrateful.
As if he'd forgotten everything he said to me in that warehouse. As if he hadn't committed those crimes.
Still,none of that mattered.
The police followed the clues I gave them and found the bodies of Jennie and that corrupt doctor.
Then, they dug into Thomas'bank records and pieced together the truth behind my parents'deaths.
With four lives on his hands,he was sentenced to death in court.
Thomas refused to accept the verdict and insisted on appealing.
The second trial upheld the original sentence.
Only then did he finally give up.
The day before his execution, his lawyer found me and said,"Mr.Sullivan wants to see you one last time."
I refused.
