Jeremy and I had our grand wedding of the century a month later.
We decided to spend our honeymoon in Europe.
Jeremy had arranged everything perfectly;my only job was to enjoy it.
When we returned,a call came from Hunter's nanny.
"Miss Sloan,Hunter refuses to take medicine.I really have no choice. You are his only relative. Can you come to take care of him?"
I went to the nanny's house.
Hunter lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Because of the genetic disease, his body is much thinner than children of the same age and his face is abnormally pale.
The nanny tried to feed him his medicine, but he wouldn't open his mouth.
I tried to coax him gently for a long time, but it was useless.
To be honest,I didn't have any real feelings for him.
As I was about to leave,he called me,"Auntie."
Then he asked,"What kind of person was my mother?"
I froze in surprise.
Looking closer at Hunter,I noticed his eyes and eyebrows resembled my sister's.
My sister was a gentle and kind person.
She wouldn't have left us so early if it hadn't been for Thomas.
She might have had a harmonious family,well-behaved and adorable children and a happy life.
Hunter looked at me and said,"Auntie, everyone says I'm an unwanted child. My mother didn't want me and neither did my father."
"You're my last relative. If you leave me here, does that mean you don't want me either?"
One Thomas Sullivan had caused a tragedy spanning three generations.
I admit that because of that man,I couldn't bring myself to feel close to Hunter.
At this moment, seeing him look at me with eyes so similar to my sister's as he asked that question,my heart couldn't help but soften.
"No,Hunter.Would you like to come with Auntie?"
He nodded.
So,I took him home with me.
My sister had treated me so well when she was alive. No matter how terrible Thomas was, this child was innocent.
Fulfilling my duty as his aunt could be a way to comfort my sister's spirit in heaven.
The tricky part was that Jeremy didn't like Hunter.
He told me,"Sharon, sometimes you must believe in genetics.Thomas was a complete lunatic."
What he meant was obvious. He thought Hunter might be the same.
However,the boy was so well-behaved.
He ate when told and took his medicine without fuss.He also went to bed, woke up on time and went to school like clockwork.
On weekends,he helped the gardener tend to the flowers and chatted with the little animals in the garden.
When he found an injured bird on a rainy day,he'd bring it home, apply medicine to its wounds and release it once it healed.
He was a thoughtful, considerate child from head to toe.
Even the maids praised him,"Hunter is such a sweet boy."
I started thinking Jeremy might be overreacting.
But then reality slapped me hard in the face.
