That evening, the afterglow of the sunset filled the sky.
I hadn't been feeling well lately and was resting with my eyes closed on a chair in the garden.
Hunter came over with a plate of cut fruit."Auntie, have some fruit."
I opened my mouth and took his mangosteen, feeling drowsy in the sunset.
Hunter leaned closer to me and whispered,"Auntie, they say my parents were killed because of you.Is that true?"
His voice held a sinister quality that didn't belong to an eight-year-old child.
Goosebumps erupted all over my skin.I snapped my eyes open.
Then,everything happened in a flash.
Hunter raised the fruit knife and drove it straight into my chest.
"It's your fault I became an orphan.Go to hell!"
He stabbed with all his strength. The crazed expression on his face was exactly like Thomas'the day he set that fire.
I was terrified and pushed him away with all my might.
The servants heard the commotion and rushed over, pinning him to the ground.
Hunter glared at me with wide,hate-filled eyes."You bitch! You deserve to die!"
That look of pure hatred twisted his young face into something vicious and cruel. The sweet child from before was gone, nowhere to be found.
One of the maids was trembling."Oh my god,he was pretending all along? He's only eight. How can he be so calculating? It's terrifying!"
I was chilled to the bone.
Still, the more I thought about it,the less surprised I was.
He had grown up under the tutelage of Jennie,a murderer. What correct sense of right and wrong could he possibly have?
Thomas was utterly wicked, his bones filled with vile nature. How could his son not have picked up any of it?
Jeremy was right.
As I was being sent to the hospital,I had to admit it.
That stab wound was severe and I was hospitalized for days.
Jeremy sent Hunter away without asking for my opinion.
I had no idea where he was sent.
On the day I was discharged from the hospital,Jeremy held me in his arms the entire time.
He didn't look too happy,so I kissed him a few times to cheer him up.
Jeremy was very pleased and pulled me into the bathroom that night.
I pressed my hand against his chest."Be careful of the baby."
Jeremy froze."What do you mean?"
When I was admitted to the hospital due to the injury, they discovered I was pregnant.
I had told the doctor not to say anything.I wanted to tell him myself.
I took his hand and placed it on my belly."There's a little one growing in here.Ours."
His eyes widened slowly, joy and disbelief spreading across his face.He was speechless.
I was already snuggled under the covers when he came to his senses.
He rushed over, scooped me up and smothered me in kisses.
"Baby,you're amazing!"
That child was the best gift we could've ever received.
From that moment on,Jeremy started preparing everything for the baby.He doted on me even more, like I was made of glass.
During the entire pregnancy,I didn't have any unhappy times.
The following spring,I gave birth to two twins,a boy and a girl.
They're growing up happy and healthy in the love between Jeremy and me.They're optimistic and enthusiastic, intelligent and kind.
As for Hunter.
Aside from sending him targeted medication and living expenses regularly,I never saw him again.
