After two weeks practicing with the capture weapon and healing some injuries from his classmates it was finally the day of the sports festival.
"I don't want to do this anymore." Yuki bluntly stated as he sat in the waiting room.
"What? What's wrong Yuki-kun?" Uraraka asked.
"I don't think I'll be leaving any lasting impressions on the heroes', my quirk isn't exactly flashy." Yuki sighed heavily.
"Everyone, Are you ready?" Iida shouted as he burst through the doors.
"We will be entering soon!"
Yuki whined letting his head slam on the table.
Can I still back out?
"Midoriya,"
"Todoroki-kun? What is it?"
Yuki closed his eyes in hope of sleeping through the entire event.
The atmosphere shifted from nervous to tense.
Great, a love confession.
"Looking at things objectively, I think I'm stronger than you." Todoroki began.
Oof
"Huh?... Y-yeah...."
Don't just give in so easily!
"But... All Might had his eye on you. Doesn't he?"
GREAT! Secret is out! Not It! It wasn't me!
"I'm not trying to pry about that. But I'm going to beat you."
So...not a love confession....
"Oh? Is the best in the class making a declaration of war?" Kaminari asked.
"Oi, oi, oi! Why are you picking a fight all of a sudden? Not now, we're about to start!" Kirishima piped in.
Deep sleep, take over.... NOW!
"We're not here to play at being friends. So what does it matter?"
Fucking edgy peppermint.
"Todoroki-kun, I don't know what you're thinking when you say you'll beat me,"
Seriously? I thought it was pretty self-explanatory... IN BATTLE YOU DUMB BEAN
"But of course you're better than me. I think you're more capable than most people..."
Stop. His ego is gonna grow...
"Looking at it objectively..."
"Midoriya, you probably shouldn't talk so negatively..." Kirishima spoke up again trying to ease the tension.
"But everyone-- The students from other courses are aiming for the top with everything they're got! I can't afford to fall behind. I'll be going for it with everything I have, too."
"Yeah."
That's it...? 'Yeah.'.....? Wtf
"Okay!" Yuki shouted, springing up from his chair, slamming his hands on the table.
" 'nough of that pizazz! Let's get going before we all turn crazy from the tension!"
"Hey!" Present Mic shouted through the speakers. Followed by the crowd's own 'Hey.'
"Pay attention audience! Swarm, mass media! This year's high school rodeo of adolescence that you all love, the U.A. sports festival is about to begin! Everybody, are you ready?!"
Don't puke. Don't puke. You're fine. It's gonna be alright--
"It's time for the students to enter the first-year stage!"
"The U.A sports festival! The huge battle where fledging heroes sharpen their swords once a year! Anyway, these are the guys, right? The miraculous new stars who overcame enemy attacks with their hearts of steel!"
No. I wouldn't exactly put it that way...
"Hero course, Class 1-A, right?!"
Walking out into the open was intimidating.
"Th-th-there are so many people..." the poor green-haired boy was darting his eyes in every direction, clearly shaken by the intensity and density of the crowds.
"Will we be able to give out best performance being watched by so many people?" Iida asked no one in particular.
"I feel like a cornered animal." Yuki scowled looking around as well.
"This is also part of the training required to become a hero." Iida convinced himself.
Yuki side-eyed Iida... That's one way to see it I guess.
"They haven't been getting as much airtime, but this class is also full of talent!" Present Mic boomed. "Hero course, Class 1-B!"
"Next up, general studies Classes C, D, and E!
Support course, Classes F, G, and H are here too!
And the business course, Classes I, J, and K!
All of U.A.'s first years are here now!"
Yuki took a glance around, he was sure he would have been placed in Support or maybe in the General course when he'd agreed to Recovery Girl's proposal to study at U.A.
"There sure are a lot of us." Yuki mumbled.
"Time for the player pledge!" Midnight announced, standing on a small stage in her very not child friendly hero costume.
"What is Ms. Midnight wearing?" Yuki heard Kirishima asked, other people also blushing. Yuki could only cringe and wonder how she was so confident.
"That's the R-rated hero for you."
"Is it okay for her to be at a high school even though she's R-rated?"
"YES!" a cry from Mineta.
"Quiet, everyone!" Midnight flung her hand whip to the side.
Yuki felt his skin crawl and his flight instincts kick in. Arms slowly wrapping around his stomach.
Relax. It's fine. You're okay.
"Representing the students is Bakugo Katsuki from Class 1-A!"
Never mind, I'm not fine. Stupid nerd. You only got first in the year because of three points!
"What? It's Kaachan?"
"That guy did finish first in the entrance exam after all."
"Tch. Stupid three point." Yuki scoffed.
"In the Hero course." a girl explained. Clearly irked at the hero course-- or maybe more specifically class 1-A.
"R-Right." Midoriya was quick to straighten his back.
"Obviously she hates us." Sero whispered.
"And it's all Bakugo's fault." Kaminari complained.
Yuki reached out and flicked the back of his head.
"Ow!"
"Be respectful." Yuki droned.
Bakugo now stood on the platform facing the audience, the silence drenched in anticipation.
"I pledge-- That I'll be number one."
"I knew he'd do that!"
"What the heck!"
"Stop messing around!"
"Don't be so full of yourselves, Class A!"
"You sludge bastard!"
Yuki could only laugh at the others' reactions.
"Why are you doing something so disgraceful?!" Iida's arm swinging down in chops.
"At least become a nice bouncy step for me to jump off of." Bakugo calmly stated, now doing a thumbs down at the first years.
"How overconfident can you get? I'll crush you!"
Yuki was sure Bakugo wasn't trying to taunt the rest. He was just voicing his goals out in the open. His people skills obviously weren't quite the best so it just simply came out as cocky.
"He sure needs to pick out his words better." Yuki laughed.
"Now, let's get started right away. The first game is what you'd call a qualifier! Every year, many drink their tears here!"
Honestly I think I will too.
"Now, here is the fateful first game!"
A Hologram popped up with a randomizer behind her.
"This year is...this!"
Ha ha. I'm gonna fucking lose.
"An obstacle course race."
"All 11 classes will participate in this race. The course will be the outer circumference of this stadium-- about four kilometers! Our school's selling point is freedom!"
An evil aura suddenly emerged from her.
"As long as you stay on the course, it doesn't matter what you do!"
Great people will die now.
"Now, take your places everyone!"
Yuki looked around to see where they would be headed and immediately noticed the too small tunnel for 11 classes...
"I do not want to get trampled today."
He wanted to cry, not out of frustration but also out of frustration. (Yes he said that correctly.)
Unfortunately for him as everyone was headed to the tunnel he was pushed along with the crowd.
"I won't make it. I know I just won't." Yuki mumbled. Now quite literally surrounded by his peers and almost dead center of the fucking mob.
The first green light went out.
What should I do? Should I fake a severe stomach ache? It's not like I'm going to actually go to a hero agency?!
The second light went out.
AH! What the hell?! Chiyo-sensei I'm sorry. I'm gonna let disgrace befall your name!
The final light went out. At this point Yuki just let the wave of bodies drag him along.
"Okay, here's the play-by-play!" Yuki heard Mic's voice.
It was a dark day when I die-- "OW!" an elbow had hit his side.
"Watch it!"
"Hey, Hey!"
"This is too narrow!"
"Ouch!"
"Hey, move it!"
Yuki was getting elbowed and shoved from every which way. He was absolutely smothered by the others in the tunnel to the point he stopped breathing for a good few seconds when his face was pressed against someone's back.
Now keeping his head up and away as much as possible from nearly suffocating he was starting to get pissed off.
"Ah! This is stupid!" He cried out before clasping onto the pair of shoulders in front of him and pushing himself up into the air.
"SO SORRY!" he cried out as he began to step on students', mainly large shoulders for better footing.
A sudden wave of coolness filled the tunnel.
"COLD!" Yuki shivered as he allowed the cold breeze to give him a push.
He was reaching towards the front and students were beginning to bend over to try and free themselves from ice Yuki knew came from Todoroki.
"So sorry, Love!" Yuki apologized as he accidentally kicked a girl in the back of her head.
"So cold!"
"Outta the way!"
"I can't get it off!"
From behind he could hear other students having jumped off the floor just in time as he had and were now moving forward above the fallen.
"Naive, Todoroki!"
"I won't let you get away so easily! You half-and-half bastard!"
There's that raging furball.
"My deepest Apologies!"
Yuki shouted upon using a students almost as a spring board upon reaching the end of the tunnel.
Landing on the ice he made sure to focus on his movements and use the momentum of his fall to slide on the ice. Making sure to push himself off of others no matter how much of a dirty trick it seemed to them.
The Ice was beginning to thin out into dirt. "Great." Taking a glimpse up ahead he noticed a small thing go flying off course.
"Mineta?"
"Obstacles have shown up suddenly! Starting with the first barrier!" Mic sounded too excited in Yuki's opinion.
"Faux villains from the entrance exams?!" someone shouted from up ahead.
"Robo inferno!"
"Fan-fucking-tastic!" Yuki was trying to keep his pace running but a part of him also wanted to wait until enough of them were destroyed for him to slip past.
"They're the Zero pointers from the exams!"
I'm sorry, WhAtT?!
"This is what they meant by obstacles?!"
"Seriously? The hero course had to fight those?"
"There are too many! I can't get through!"
Yuki finally reached the crowd being held up by the robots. "They're bigger in person huh?" He huffed, hands on waist, looking like everything he'd just done and will do is a pain.
A familiar cold breeze became apparent, followed by a large surge of ice flung towards one of the robots who was reaching downward.
"That's not well balance--"
"Between their legs!"
"We can get through!"
"I wouldn't if I were you! I froze them when they were unbalanced. They'll fall over."
"Jerk." Yuki smirked as he watched the ice crumble and begin to fall along with the bot.
"Todoroki from Class 1-A! He attacked and defended in one hit! How elegant!" Mic cheered.
"Amazing! He's the first one through! It's you know, practically unfair!"
"His actions are logical and strategic."
That makes him more of a jerk. Yuki irked.
"As expected of someone who got in through recommendations! He'd never fought them before, but those Robo infernos couldn't get past his elite moves!"
No, his quirk can be severely destructive. He could use a bit more control.
Yuki could only stare up at the bots with an anticipated grin.
What to do now... and how...
