Cynthia Grey – Traitor. Stolen Heir of Alpha Ivan.
REWARD: 506,000 GOLD – DEAD OR ALIVE
I swallowed hard, my fingers trembling as I gripped the parchment. The sketch of my face stared back at me—harsh lines, hollow eyes. Below it, another image burned into my mind.
ALPHA DAMON BLACKWOOD – GOD OF WAR
REWARD: 250,000 GOLD – EXTREME CAUTION ADVISED
My pulse roared in my ears. This wasn't just a hunt.
He had turned the entire world against us.
"We need to go." Damon's voice was quiet, but the tension in it sent a chill down my spine.
Before I could argue, he snatched the poster from my grasp and tossed it into the fire. Flames devoured the parchment, curling it into ash, but the truth remained.
I pressed a hand to my belly, feeling the weight of my child beneath my palm. Every day, my body changed. Every day, hiding the life inside me grew harder.
Damon didn't hesitate. "Amara says there's an underground passage beneath the cabin. We can hide there."
His eyes were sharp, scanning the trees, muscles coiled tight. He hadn't slept in days—I could see the exhaustion in the set of his jaw, the way his shoulders tensed at every distant snap of a branch.
And then I felt it.
A flutter. A warmth.
No. I shoved the thought away. Not now, Cynthia. Not when we're being hunted.
Another branch cracked.
Damon moved instantly, pushing me behind him, his free hand already gripping the dagger at his thigh. My heart hammered against my ribs.
Moonlight barely pierced the dense canopy, but the scent of wolves thickened in the air—closer now.
"Run." Damon's voice was a rough command.
I tried to keep up, but my swollen belly made every step a struggle. My breath came in sharp gasps, legs burning as I stumbled over roots.
"Damon—"
"No time to argue." He caught my wrist, dragging me forward.
The wolves were gaining.
Damon's grip tightened, his body shielding mine as we crashed through the underbrush. His scent surrounded me—smoke and pine, warmth and safety.
"We're almost there," he gritted out.
But the sentinels were faster.
A howl split the night—then they were on us.
A dark blur slammed into Damon from the side, sending us sprawling. My back hit the dirt, pain flaring as panic flooded my veins.
Damon was already up, dagger flashing as he blocked a clawed strike from a massive wolf.
"Run!" he roared.
I forced myself to stand, vision swimming. My belly ached, but stopping wasn't an option.
The cabin door burst open.
"Cynthia—inside!" Amara's voice cut through the chaos.
I stumbled toward her, legs threatening to give out.
Damon fought like a demon, three wolves circling him. One lunged—he dodged, his blade slicing across its throat. Blood sprayed.
Another attacked—
A gust of wind blasted the wolves back, sending them crashing into the trees.
Damon didn't hesitate. He grabbed my hand, yanking me inside. Amara slammed the door shut, sealing it with a whispered spell.
The ground trembled.
Outside, wolves howled, claws scraping against wood—but Amara's magic held. For now.
She led us down a hidden trapdoor, into a cold, stone-lined basement. Dusty crates and old bookshelves filled the space, the air thick with the scent of earth.
Damon guided me to the wall, his hands steadying me as I sank down.
I exhaled shakily, pressing a hand to my belly. "That was too close."
He crouched in front of me, dark eyes scanning for injuries. "Are you hurt?"
I shook my head. "Just exhausted."
He dragged a hand through his hair. "Rest. I'll stand guard."
But I caught his wrist.
He stilled. "Cynthia?"
My heart pounded. "You… you always take care of me."
His expression softened, but something raw flickered in his gaze.
I swallowed hard. "No one's ever done that before. Not like this."
His jaw clenched. "You deserve it."
The lump in my throat grew. "So do you."
Silence stretched between us, the lantern's flickering light casting shadows across his face. For the first time, I saw him—really saw him. The man beneath the armor. The man who'd been betrayed.
Just like me.
Damon's fingers brushed against my palm, warm and steady. I didn't pull away.
"I won't let anything happen to you," he murmured.
My chest tightened.
I knew I shouldn't. Knew it was too soon.
But gods help me, I was falling for him.
I squeezed his hand. "I know."
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
I believed it.
