The world had become a burning hellscape of fire and blood.
Ivan stood before me, his golden eyes gleaming with twisted triumph even as crimson dripped from his lips. Wounded but still standing. Still lethal.
Behind me, Damon fought like a rabid animal, carving through Ivan's warriors with relentless fury. But we were running out of time—and strength.
Ivan's lips curled. "You're bleeding, my love."
I spat blood onto the scorched earth. "Takes one to know one."
His grin turned feral. "I always knew you had fight in you. But it won't save you."
My fingers tightened around the dagger's hilt. "I don't need saving. Just your corpse."
He lunged.
I barely dodged, feeling the whoosh of his claws graze my neck. Spinning low, I slashed across his ribs, the blade biting deep. Ivan roared in pain but kept coming.
The bastard never quit.
"Still think you can win?" he snarled. "I gave you your power, Cynthia. Made you what you are."
I dodged another killing strike, teeth grinding. "My strength was never yours to claim."
Darkness flooded his eyes. "You were always meant to be mine."
Something primal snapped inside me. "I belong to no one." Then I struck.
Feinting left, I twisted right and buried my dagger in his side. Ivan staggered back with a guttural scream. Not giving him breath, I drove my knee into his gut, sending him crashing down. My blade glowed with vengeance—this nightmare ended now.
Then Ethan's scream froze my blood.
I whirled—and my heart stopped.
Ethan stood trembling, but something was... changing. His small hands pulsed with golden light, his entire body crackling with raw, unstable energy.
Ivan, coughing blood on his knees, let out a broken laugh. "Look at him... Look at that power!"
Damon sprinted toward Ethan—too late. The boy unleashed a shockwave that sent warriors flying like ragdolls. Even Damon got thrown back, skidding across the dirt.
The air sizzled with ozone.
When Ethan's eyes locked on Ivan, they burned with terrifying fury. For the first time, fear flickered across Ivan's face.
"You hurt my mom," Ethan whispered, his child's voice trembling with cosmic power.
Ivan tried rising, but Ethan raised one hand—and Ivan's body locked mid-motion.
My breath caught. This wasn't just magic. My son was controlling the Alpha himself.
Ivan's muscles strained against the invisible bonds. "W-what—?"
Ethan took a shaky step forward. "I don't want to be like you."
"You are my blood!" Ivan spat.
Golden fire erupted in Ethan's eyes. "No. I'm theirs."
With a final cry, Ethan unleashed everything. Ivan's scream curdled my blood as energy ripped through him, draining every ounce of strength until—with a final shudder—he collapsed.
Silence.
The mighty Alpha Ivan was dead. Really dead.
His surviving warriors fled like rats. The fortress smoldered around us, smoke curling into the bruised sky.
I turned to find Ethan swaying. Scooping him into my arms, I whispered, "I've got you, baby."
"Did I... kill him?" His tiny body shook against mine.
I kissed his sweaty forehead. "You stopped something that never should've existed."
Damon appeared beside us, kneeling to cup Ethan's head. "You saved us all. Saved your mom."
Ethan's lip quivered. "Are you still my dad?"
Damon's voice broke. "Always have been. Always will be."
When Ethan threw himself into Damon's arms, hot tears spilled down my face. For the first time in ten years, I actually believed it—we were going to be okay.
Months Later
Pine-scented wind ruffled my hair as I leaned on our new porch railing. No more war. Just endless forest and open sky.
Damon's arms circled my waist, his stubble scratching my shoulder. "Feels real now, huh?"
I leaned back into him. "Yeah. It really does."
In the yard, Ethan practiced with Amara—alive against all odds. She was teaching him control, helping shape his power instead of letting it shape him.
Damon kissed my temple. "Love you, Cynthia."
Turning in his arms, I pressed our foreheads together. "Love you more."
His calloused hand cradled my cheek. "And you're finally mine."
I grinned. "Always was, dumbass."
When his lips crashed into mine, it tasted like the future we'd bled for. No more running. No more fear.
Just us. A family. Home at last.
