Jaxon POV
I held onto my mate’s hand tightly as we walked slowly into the living room, my mother and father following behind us. There, situated on the couch were Alex’s so-called parents. His mother, a slender-looking woman, had his features, the same sandy blonde hair and big blue eyes, and was dressed in a designer black dress with killer heels and a designer handbag to match. She looked cold, I thought dismally, not like my mother at all who emitted warmness wherever she went. My gaze went to the man. He too, had sandy blonde hair and blue eyes. He was broad-shouldered, his body was fit and he was clad in an expensive suit, with a Rolex to boot. He screamed wealth, not that that mattered to me one whit. I had enough wealth for the both of us and it failed to impress me. Just because you were wealthy, didn’t make you a good person and the aura that was surrounding these two was anything but good. I instantly disliked them, which was not common for me.
They stood up. We introduced ourselves and sat down. Alex’s mother, Petunia, crossed her ankles and sniffed while my mother smiled at her warmly. “So Mrs. Jacobs,” she said warmly as I kept silent, Alex tight lipped “What do we owe the pleasure of this visit? It is so delightful to meet you both by the way” she gushed “Alex is such a kind, loving man and we adore him like a son” she added as Alex gave her a grateful look, looking extremely touched. I grinned. Her declaration hadn’t surprised me in the slightest. She was constantly hinting for me to make our pairing official and I knew when the time came she would love nothing more than to be involved with it.
Petunia sniffed and then glanced over at her husband, Mark who raised his chin slightly. “I take it that this Alpha Jaxon is your mate?” she said haughtily to Alex as I stiffened. She made it sound so derogatory, so dirty, somehow. Like we were doing something wrong by being together.
“He is” Alex shot back, grabbing my hand and holding it as his mother narrowed her eyes displeased.
His father glowered at him, looking disgusted.
My father cleared his throat. My mother, bless her heart, rubbed her stomach and piped up enthusiastically “Don’t they make the most handsome couple? So good-looking together. A perfect match. Oh the pictures they make together, it’s just magic” she breathed, a whimsical look on her face.
I appreciated my mother in that moment, more than ever. She might have her quirks but she always came through for you in the end. Alex looked at her gratefully.
“They certainly balance each other remarkably well,” my father said agreeably, his eyes narrowing as he stared at Alex’s parents who shifted on the couch looking annoyed and uncomfortable.
My mother clapped her hands together. Alex’s mother stared at her in fascination. Like she was some sort of new species she had never seen before. It made me uncomfortable and a little peeved and Alex looked angry about it.
“I am so happy that you came to visit your son. He’s been here for a few months now and I’m sure you have been missing him immensely” she breathed. “I couldn’t bear to be away from my son for so long without seeing him” she added with a slight frown.
“I know that if my son went away with his mate for so long that I would miss him,” my father said gravely “I would at least phone him on the odd occasion to see how he was doing and to catch up with him.”
Ouch. Even my father was throwing some serious shade at the Jacobs. I guess they weren’t making a good first impression. Especially since they weren’t speaking much. It took a lot to anger my father. These two had managed to accomplish it in the first few minutes. Touche.
“Well about that” Petunia finally drawled, lifting her eyes to the heavens and looking indignant “We feel that it is finally time for Alex to come home and resume his rightful responsibilities as the only heir to our family name”
I frowned. “I’m sorry, could you be more specific?” I asked, fighting to hold onto my temper “I was under the impression that you wanted nothing to do with him any longer. Well suddenly now, it’s changed?” I asked. I was immediately suspicious. Hadn’t they disowned him? Did they think he would just come waltzing back into their lives like nothing had happened?
“All of this” Mark spoke up, waving his hand at Alex and me “It’s just a phase. Experimentation. It means nothing,” he said stiffly “and it’s causing nothing but embarrassment and problems to the family name,” he said icily.
“We are mates” Alex hissed “And if you’re referring to me being gay, it is not just a phase” he snarled “How many times must I repeat myself about this?”
My mother reached over and patted his hand sympathetically. She turned her gaze on the Jacobs.
My mother c****d her head. I braced myself. She blinked. Gave them an innocent look and pursed her lips. “I find it very interesting that after all this time, suddenly you want Alex to come back home,” she said thoughtfully “Why would that be?
“It doesn’t matter” Alex blurted out, his chest heaving in anger “Because I’m not coming back” he snapped a dark scowl on his face.
I was so angry my whole body was reverberating with rage. Aries was going insane and I was barely holding him back, part of me tempted to let him loose on the bastards.
“Enough” his father yelled, getting to his feet. He glared down at his son “We have been nothing but a laughingstock in the pack since it became known you left to be mates with another male of all things” he said with disgust “I don’t care that the Alpha gave you permission to leave. We need you” he said with derision.
“You need me,” Alex said bitterly, choking on a laugh “Sounds about right. Not because you want me. Tell me Father, what is it that you need me for this time” he said, glaring right at him and narrowing his eyes.
His father coolly adjusted his cuff links. My mother looked ready to cold c**k Petunia I noted. I kind of hoped she would. Petunia cleared her throat. “Well lately the company has come under some financial difficulty if you must know,” she said calmly “and as you are aware it has been in our family for generations. We simply cannot have it go under. Not when there is something we can do to save it. You owe us that.”
Silence. I found myself struggling to breathe, my fury was that palpable. Were these people freaking kidding me? Alex wasn’t some pawn they could use to save their blasted company. He was a human being. He was my mate and I would be damned if they thought they could tear him away from me.
“Of course. God forbid the stupid company goes under. Can’t have that now can we” Alex said sarcastically.
“Bite your tongue” his mother snapped, drawing herself to her full height as she stood up “Show your mother some respect.”
“I’ll show you some respect when you show me some” Alex told her sourly.
“How exactly is Alex supposed to help you with preventing your company from going under?” My father asked with interest “Are you proposing he goes back to your pack to help with it?”
Mark snorted. Alex stiffened. I tensed. God, I hated these people. No wonder Alex had been so glad to see the back of them and move in with me. I didn’t blame the poor bastard at all. It was a miracle he hadn’t run away in fact. I knew if I’d been in his shoes, I would have. I found myself appreciating my parents in a whole new way. My mother was a saint, I thought bemusedly, in comparison to these two. I would never complain about her again.
“Not exactly,” Mark said smoothing his tie and looking arrogant “We have a rather, different solution in mind.”
Alex’s mother nodded, straightening her dress and a slow smile spreading on her face.
“Then what is this solution?” my mother asked pleasantly.
She had a forced smile on her face. Alex just looked pissed. I touched his hand and he relaxed immediately. His parents sniffed looking at me disapprovingly. I smiled at them, my smile dripping with insincerity.
“See the thing is, we wish to merge our company with another one but in order to do so, the other family wishes to merge in real life as well,” Petunia said frostily “That is they wish for Alex here” she indicated her son who looked ready to launch himself at them both “to marry their daughter in exchange for their company. We have already agreed as we feel it would be a perfect match for the two of them and it would solve our financial difficulties. It is a win-win solution for everyone” she said arrogantly.
The nerve. She didn’t understand Alex or his sexuality at all.
“Does she have a p***s?” I asked her bluntly, raising an eyebrow. “I’m sorry,” Petunia said looking offended, her voice shocked.
“The woman he’s supposed to marry. Does she have a p***s?”
“No,” she said looking dumbfounded and confused.
“Well considering it’s supposed to be a win-win, how exactly does Alex win, Considering he’s gay and all and not interested in v*****s?” I was blunt and to the point, I was fed up with all their arrogance and holier-than-thou attitude. Alex’s eyes widened as he stifled his laughter, his body shaking with amusement.
Both his parents gasped in outrage. “You listen here you little punk” began Mr Jacobs but my mother interrupted, poking her finger into his chest.
“No you listen here” she snapped, startling the heavyset man who wasn’t used to a woman speaking to him in that manner “You lost all privileges of calling Alex your son when you pretty much threw him out for being gay. You don’t get to come here and use him for your own selfish reasons so that you can save your own asses. You don’t get to come here and take away my second son. Alex is our family now. There is no f*****g way I’m letting you touch a single hair on his body” she breathed, her nostrils flaring as Mark looked at her in shock. “I swear you try and I’ll kill you, pregnant or not. Nobody touches my babies” she exclaimed.
I stepped in “Alex is my mate and I love him. You think of even attempting to take him by force and I will break every finger in your body, one by one” I said evenly “and I don’t care if you are a woman or not. I’m all for equality” I added, staring at a blanching Petunia.
My father cleared his throat. “I have to say you are not the wisest people coming here and threatening an Alpha and his two sons,” he said as Alex’s eyes went shiny with unshed tears “And if you ever step foot on this land again, without Alex’s express permission, I will throw your ass in the dungeon and let you rot in there for as long as he deems necessary. You’re both disgusting pieces of garbage” he said, clenching his hands into fists “Now get the hell out of here before I do something I regret.”
Their mouths gaped open. Alex shot them a triumphant look. “As you can see, I have found a family here and I’m not leaving,” he said shortly “Now leave and don’t ever come back” he snarled.
They backed away, seeing the hostility coming from all of us, and dashed out the door, looking frantic and panicked. Alex put his head in his hands. My mother and father quietly left the room, leaving me to comfort my mate. I wrapped my arms around him. “I love you” I murmured in his ear as he began to break down “and I’m never going to abandon you. I promise.”
It was a promise I fully intended to keep. Now all I had to do, was make a plan and I knew exactly who to involve in it. Alex was mine for keeps, it’s time he learned I had every intention of making sure that he knew that too.
