                    Blaze POV
I heard a soft twanging noise, my head whipping around as I heard Jordan’s scream of anguish, to see a large arrow protruding from her back. “Jordan” I yelled, bending over and picking her up, kicking the pack house door open, and running inside. I laid her on her side on the couch and looked her in the eyes. I wrestled with my conscience. She needed me, but so did my pack. I was torn between the two, knowing my responsibility as an Alpha and my responsibility to her as her mate.
“Honey this is going to hurt, but if I don’t do it, you won’t heal. I need to go help the others, but I won’t do that until I know you are okay” I promised her, feeling grim at what I had to do to help her.
She gritted her teeth, tears in her eyes. God, I knew this had to be Stefanie’s doing. Patrol was already mind-linking me back.
There are hunters coming onto the territory, along with your sister Alpha Blaze. We are trying to hold them back, but some of them have made it onto the grounds! We must get the children and women to safety Alpha Blaze!
Do what you can. I’ll be right there I yelled, Thomas already in the thick of things, to my relief and defending the grounds as best as he could.
“Do it” Jordan said hoarsely, her eyes full of trust as she looked at me.
I grasped the back end of the arrow in my hands and winced as I broke it off, Jordan screaming again. I pushed the other end through her chest and ripped it out. She never stopped screaming out in pain. I hesitated. But my pack needed me as well. She sensed my internal conflict, biting her lip and gritting her teeth as her wound slowly began to knit together. “Go” she yelled “Go help the pack” she begged desperately. “I’ll live, just go.”
I kissed her on the top of her head and bolted out the front door, shifting into my large black wolf. I saw several hunters on the ground with rifles pointed at my pack members. I crashed into them and ripped the rifles from their hands, tearing into their throats and leaving them in a pool of their own blood. I made certain they were all dead before I bolted over to another hunter who saw me coming and lifted the rifle to his shoulder, taking aim. Good luck, I thought smugly, narrowing my eyes at him. He was in for a big surprise. I was faster than their darts were.
I weaved back and forth, darting side to side, the tranquilizer dart missing me by inches, my body slamming into him and sending him to the ground. He produced a knife from his sheaf on his ankle and waved it at me. I bit his hand, and he dropped it swearing. He kicked out and hit me on the side, causing me to growl at him. I bit into his side, tearing a large chunk out of him as he cursed and yelled before several other wolves joined me. I left them to it, hearing his screams behind me as I darted into the forest. Where was that b***h sister of mine and her mate? I knew it was her that hit Jordan with that arrow. I could sense it. When I got my hands on her …
When we both get our hands on her, she’s a dead woman Lucifer snarled. I’m going to enjoy tearing her from limb to limb. We have to find her first Lucifer. There are so many of them. She could be hiding anywhere in this damn forest. She grew up here, remember? She knows the forest like the back of her hand. Maybe even as much as I do.
She couldn’t have gotten that far in the amount of time she had between us helping Jordan and now. Her wolf isn’t that strong. Even if she does come from an Alpha’s bloodline. She’s never shown an inclination to train or tap into the power she possesses.
But she knows these woods like the back of her hand. That gives her a slight advantage.
You forget, so do we. I’m willing to bet we know these woods even better than she does. Stop doubting yourself and start thinking about where she would go! Pick up her scent!
Another hunter. I leaped onto him and tore his throat out, listening to the strange gurgling sound he made as he died, before pouncing back onto the ground and racing through the trees. It seemed like my pack, thankfully, had everything under control, with minor injuries to my pack members if any at all. I sniffed, trying to pick up Stefanie’s scent. Where the bloody hell was she hiding? A man stepped out from the trees, a smirk on his ugly face. I growled. I didn’t like him. I
sensed he was a hunter. I could also smell Stefanie’s scent all over him. Not only that but as I zeroed in on his neck, I could see that he bore a mark. Stefanie had marked him, claiming him as her mate! I swallowed hard. This had to be the infamous Baxter. If he was here, where was she? I snarled. He grinned, not intimidated in the slightest. Arrogant little bastard. Well, he wouldn’t be arrogant for long if I had anything to do with it.
“You must be the brother, Blaze” he hissed, the rifle still pointed at me without wavering. “The black wolf speaks for itself” he added cockily.
I blinked at him. I stalked towards him, my jaws pulled back in a snarl. “I’ve heard so much about you” he drawled “and I must say I’m looking forward to finding out just how much of a challenge you really are.”
He surprised me by throwing the rifle down to the ground. My hackles rose and my fur rose on end. I hissed. His bones began to crack and adjust, and then he shifted into a large silver wolf, a grin on his face. Great. A shifter, no doubt thanks to Stefanie’s marking him.
f*****g fantastic. I raced towards him and he met me, both of us clawing and scratching at each other. I gouged his side and bit into his hind leg, making him yelp as he jumped backward, glaring at me. He was no longer finding this amusing. He might be strong, but he was no match for an Alpha wolf, let alone a pissed-off one. I jumped on him, dragged my claws down his back, drawing blood, and jumped back off as he howled in pain. It was music to my ears.
He turned around, snarling and clamping his jaws open and shut. There was a menacing look on his face. I smirked. He ran towards me again and I batted him with my paw, sending him flying backward into a nearby tree. Thud. He yelped. I saw him get to his feet, stumbling slightly. Good, I’d injured him. Majorly. I tackled him, pinning him to the tree, and bit into his neck, clamping my jaws down, gripping tightly as he frantically scratched at me. I bit him harder as he writhed, yelping. He wasn’t so damn cocky now, I thought. Suddenly he shifted back to human form, landing heavily on the ground. I backed away, eyeing him suspiciously.
He held his hands up in surrender. “Wait, please” he wheezed “I can help you.”
Right. I almost snorted at his blatant attempt to prevent me from killing him. He was on his knees now, severely injured. There was blood pooling around him. His body was shivering. I snarled and then shifted back to my human form, standing there, towering over him, my eyes darkened and filled with contempt. I despised all hunters, a threatening species to my people.
Alpha all of the hunters have been taken care of. They have all been killed or put in the dungeon. We were lucky, especially as we were expecting them. If we hadn’t been…
What about my sister? Has she been located yet? Is she among them?
No sir. There has been no sign of her. It’s as though she’s simply vanished. We will continue to keep an eye out for her. She couldn’t have gotten far.
Be careful and make sure all the rifles and weapons are destroyed. I don’t want anything of theirs to survive and to fall into the wrong hands. Make sure you get all of them.
Yes Sir.
I clenched my hands into fists. “Where is she” I snapped, not in the mood for pleasantries.
The man coughed, spitting blood out. “Who?” he said feigning confusion.
Yeah, nice f*****g try. I was not in the mood.
I strode towards him and lifted him by his neck with ease, prepared to snap it in two. He coughed and scratched at my hands, weakly, his body dangling like a rag doll. I glared at him.
“You know exactly who I mean” I snarled “I know who you are Baxter,” I said with emphasis “So tell me now, where is this darling sister of mine? I know she’s here” I threatened “and I know she put that arrow in my mate” I growled “So don’t even bother trying to deny it.”
He laughed. A chilling sound that raised the hair on the back of my neck. “You know for somebody who is an Alpha and meant to be a leader of the pack, it was surprisingly easy to get onto your territory” he choked out.
I tightened my grip further and shook him hard. He gasped and tried to claw at me. It was futile.
My nails began to dig into his flesh, painfully. His eyes glittered as he glared at me. I could feel that he was slowly dying. He knew it too. “Kill me” he wheezed “I’m dead anyway.”
“Where is she” I yelled, banging his head against the trunk of the tree in frustration.
“Ouch,” he wheezed.
“My sister just used you, you moron” I growled “She never loved you. She isn’t capable of love. All she does is manipulate people. You did everything she wanted. If she loved you, she would have stayed right by your side and would be here, fighting to save your pathetic ass. Instead, she’s nowhere to be found. Haven’t you realized that yet? You’re going to die, here, now, alone, while she lives, doing what she wants. Can you live with that knowledge? Do you want to go knowing that she bested you and used you?”
For once he looked uncertain, his arrogance gone. Now he just looked pathetic and like an ordinary human.
“Your people are dead” I pressed him glowering “She led you here, knowing that your people wouldn’t survive against this pack. Now I’m only going to ask you this one more time and then it’s death for you. Where is Stefanie?” I growled.
He looked defeated, his head bowing down. His voice was thick and hoarse. “She told me she was going after your Luna, Jordan now that she was weakened. She really, really hates that woman” he said brokenly.
I dropped him to the floor, hearing him curse in pain. I ignored it, shifting back into my wolf form.
Mate is in danger. We need to get to her and fast. We should never have left her in such a weakened state.
This is my fault. I thought Stefanie was out there, hiding in the woods not planning to sneak her way into the pack house and get at Jordan. My god. Her hatred runs deep.
We should have known better. Stefanie wants to get rid of the one thing we love most in this world, as her revenge. If she gets rid of Jordan and our unborn child, we will die from the pain of losing them. I cannot live without them, Blaze. We cannot live without them.
Faster, we need to go faster Lucifer. Hurry. If Stefanie has so much as laid a hand on her, I swear I’ll kill her.
Get in line, because I’ll be first. She might be your sister, but I owe her no loyalty. I won’t let her harm our mate Blaze. Family or not she must die.
I know. Do what must be done Lucifer. I’ve made my peace with what must happen. I no longer consider the traitorous b***h as my sister.
We tore through the forest, leaping over branches and fallen debris, onto the grounds and past the dead bodies, our hearts racing a mile a minute. Breathing heavily we crashed through the pack house door and was greeted with a sight that made our heart skip a beat. Dread rose inside of us as we shifted back to human form again, facing an enemy that was made of our own flesh and blood.
