Jordan POV
The pain was indescribable. Torturous. I panted, sweat beading on my brow. God it hurt. Even though it was slowly healing, it was slow and steady. I couldn’t move. I had begged Blaze to leave me on the couch, to go and help defend the pack against the hunters that had trespassed onto the pack’s territory, hoping with every fibre of my being that he would be okay, along with the rest of the pack. I couldn’t believe I had let my guard down enough to be hit by an arrow of all things.
I didn’t move fast enough to dodge it Lilith apologized.
It’s not your fault. I never anticipated she would use a bow and arrow to hurt us. Gods, though, it hurts like a b***h I hissed.
Because the tip was silver. I’m trying to heal us as fast as I can but it’s going to take time and you are going to end up with one hell of a scar. It’s lucky Blaze got it out as fast as he did. Otherwise there would be far more serious internal damage. As it is, this is minimal but still going to take some time.
Yeah, I feel really luckyl said dismally and a little sarcastically.
At least we’re not dead Lilith said trying to be helpful and encouraging. Well not yet anyway. We still have some fight left in us now, look at it positively.
There is that I said ruefully. You always look on the bright side don’t you Lilith?
Suddenly Lilith tensed as we smelled a familiar scent wafting towards us. Shit, Jordan you need to get the hell out of here, she’s coming… she trailed off as footsteps sounded just outside the doorway.
I gulped and lifted my head, weakly staring Stefanie in the eyes. Even if I wanted to move, I couldn’t. Not without tearing the wound open again. Lilith swore, pacing back and forth, while I tensed. Stefanie’s eyes glittered and her lip curled back in disdain. She looked different and more unhinged. Her long blonde hair was tied back in a ponytail. She wore a tight-fitting black tank top, camouflage pants, black combat boots and was holding a bow with a quiver full of arrows on her back. She dropped both the quiver and the bow carelessly to the floor. There was a look of utter madness on her face. Her eyes were red, like a rogues. A slow smile spread on her face. I cringed.
“Well, well, well” she purred, coming a little closer “if it isn’t Jordan. Looks like I hit you pretty good there” she said with satisfaction in her voice. “Shame I missed your heart though, I was aiming for that but you moved” she growled.
I didn’t so much as blink. She looked a bit disappointed by my reaction. I saw her kneel and retrieve a silver dagger from her ankle, the handle made of leather. I sucked in a breath as she dangled it from her fingers, smirking at me, toying with
me.
“You look so helpless lying here” she murmured, sniffing the air and smelling the distinct scent of metal in the air from the blood “and I can smell the blood loss. Poor Jordan, you’re so weak and helpless aren’t you, without darling Blaze by your side?” she taunted.
“I’m not helpless” I spat out, my eyes never moving from the dagger “and I’m not weak” I denied furiously. b***h.
Calm down, let her underestimate you. Don’t provoke her into attacking. One plunge of that knife into our stomach and she could kill our pup, warned Lilith, trying to keep a cool head.
Anything could provoke her Lilith. Look at her. She’s gone crazy. All it’s going to take is saying the wrong thing. Besides, do you really think she came here with the inclination not to kill us? It’s only a matter of time until she tries.
Yes, but time is exactly what we need right now. Let her talk. Gloat, vent, whatever. Just let her keep speaking her mind! Your life could depend on it. Our pups life depends on it. Please Jordan, try and distract her.
Stefanie tsked out loud, shaking her head back and forth slowly, her eyes gleaming as she clutched the knife tightly in her hand. My eyes darted to it. She giggled, a high-pitched sound that made me wince. “Where’s Baxter?” I asked, remembering she had a mate now.
She laughed, throwing her head back. “That moron” she chortled, not looking worried about her other half in the slightest ” he’s in the forest, no doubt trying to take care of a certain worrisome brother of mine. He thinks we’re meant for each other. Such a lovesick fool. I never knew the mate bond could be so strong for humans. Even though the stupid prick is a hunter, it was so easy to manipulate him, with the feelings he had for me. Like taking candy from a baby. Deluded, lovesick fool of a man.”
I felt a little sorry for Baxter. Only slightly as I feared for my mate. I eyed her incredulously. “Don’t you feel anything for Baxter at all? Don’t you feel the mate bond as well?” I asked.
She giggled. “Oh I feel it but I don’t care. He’s just a means to an end. A way to get my revenge against you. I would never let myself accept a lowly human as a mate, let alone a hunter” she sneered, curling her lip and eyeing me with a twisted smile.
“I feel sorry for you” I told her thickly as her eyes narrowed at me “your hatred runs so deep that you can’t let yourself be happy.”
She waved the dagger around, bringing it dangerously close to my face. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that” she hissed “what do you know? You’re just a conniving little b***h that’s completely ruined my life. Chelsea should have been my sister in law, not some pathetic fat b***h like you. I had it all planned out and everything. You have my brother wrapped around your little finger, but that, that’s going to change” she said breathing heavily, her eyes wild, her body shaking in fury. “Do you think killing me is going to change anything?” I asked her desperately “it’s only going to make Blaze hate you even more than he already does. You could still leave Stefanie, before it’s too late. Make a run for it. Who knows you might even manage to make it past the boundary line if you try” I urged through gritted teeth.
She snorted. “You think I don’t see right through you? I know what you’re trying to do. You think I can’t see that wound slowly healing itself? I know you’re just trying to play for time” she hissed and then stabbed me in the side as I screamed, feeling like a hot poker had been plunged into my side, Stefanie gloating as she pulled the knife out and examined it, blood dripping off the knife onto the ground as I curled up sobbing, another wound that would need to heal, Lilith growling with rage inside my mind.
“There” Stefanie said satisfied “that should keep you busy for a while longer, not to mention even more helpless than you already are. Don’t want you going anywhere just yet” she said slowly.
I gritted my teeth. Breathed through the pain. She stood back and c****d her head, her eyes shining. “Did that hurt” she mocked “was that painful Jordan? It’s nothing compared to what I want to do to you. Oh the things I wish I could do if I had the time.”
“He’s going to kill you for this” I told her hatefully, “Stefanie you have no idea what you’ve just done. If you’ve killed our baby…” I trailed off, my voice whispering now, dread inside of me. I didn’t even want to think about the likelihood she had.
“That would just be a bonus” she chortled not looking put out at all.
Suddenly she gasped and clutched her stomach, wheezing, her pallor extremely pale as the blood drained out of her face. She gave a howl, like she was in pain as I watched her unsympathetically. Instinctively I knew what had happened, as her face contorted in agony. Her mate, Baxter, had just died. She must be in excruciating pain. She still didn’t drop the knife though; I saw with a groan. Even now, she had the presence of mind to hold onto it. Damnit.
“Oh” she moaned, her voice cracking.
“He’s dead” I told her harshly “your mate is gone, are you happy now Stefanie? Is this the outcome you wanted? Can you live with yourself knowing you led your own mate to his death? Was all of this worth it to you?”
“Shut up” she snarled, still bent over in pain “just shut up” she yelled.
“Why, does the truth hurt? Or is it the pain of the mate bond severing that has you in so much pain” I mocked, angry now. I clutched at my wounds, breathing heavily, feeling lightheaded but refusing to show it.
She drew herself to her full height and clenched her teeth together. She strode forward and slapped me across the face, so hard that my ears started ringing and my head flung backwards. I cried out.
“I knew he was going to die” she breathed “I planned on it, you stupid bitch.”
She grabbed me by the hair and pulled, hard, yanking at it, until I fell of the couch, onto my hands and knees, whimpering from the pain.
“Get up, you fat b***h” she snarled, as I slowly got up, the pain shooting through my entire body, my hands pressing my side, and staunching the blood flow as best I could.
“Stefanie, I’m begging you” I said lowly “please don’t do this. I need to go to the hospital.”
“You’re not going to live long enough to need it” she said gleefully “so shut your big mouth Jordan else I’ll rip your tongue out next.”
I fell silent. Stefanie looked expectantly towards the door. I frowned. What was she waiting for? I heard the distinct sound of paws coming towards the house. The front door crashed open, flying off its hinges as Blaze’s giant black wolf came rushing through the doorway, skidding to a halt. Stefanie smirked at him, pressing the dagger hard against my throat, threatening me.
Blaze shifted back to his human form, his eyes narrowed as he stared at his sister. He held his hands up, careful not to move or anger her any further than she already was. “Stefanie” he said slowly “What do you think you are doing?”
I saw his eyes dart towards my wound and his face pale slightly in concern. He swallowed hard.
“What’s it look like I’m doing? I’m going to kill your mate Blaze, right in front of you” Stefanie said in a sing song voice. “Stefanie, I’m warning you, you don’t want to do this” Blaze said desperately.
I winced, the silver dagger, bubbling and burning my skin.
“Oh but I do Blaze” Stefanie said, in an ominous tone “I do. You abandoned me” she hissed “you threw me out like I was nothing. You chose her over me” she said in an incredulous tone “your own baby sister. I’m going to enjoy seeing the look on your stupid face, when you see the life completely go out of her eyes” she said triumphantly.
She made a fatal mistake. One mistake but that was all it took. She waved her arm with the knife as she spat the words out at Blake. It was more than enough. I seized her arm, ducked and with one hard thrust, followed through with the other arm, sending the knife plunging straight into her heart as her mouth opened in shock. I rolled away, as she stiffened, her eyes going wide as she looked down at her chest, the dagger protruding from it. She looked at me in disbelief as I blinked at her, feeling no remorse for what I had just done. If I could have shifted and killed her, I would have.
“You” she whispered, before the life slowly drained from her eyes and her body collapsed on the floor, her eyes staring blankly at nothing. Relief flooded through me.
I finally collapsed, darkness surrounding me, Blaze’s voice was screaming my name in the distance as I succumbed to it, needing the reprieve from the pain “Jordan, Jordan, answer me.”
