                    Alpha Blaze POV
I held her hand, tears in my eyes, her body lying listlessly on the hospital bed, the endless machines making their annoying beeping sounds as her chest moved weakly up and down. I was exhausted. The only time I ever moved from Jordan’s side was to shower and even then, I used the bathroom in the hospital while Thomas stayed by her side. If I ate, it was in the chair next to her. I slept in a cot that had been placed beside her bed at night. I let Thomas handle the pack business. Every single hunter had been killed, including those who had been placed in the dungeon. My sister, dead, had been burnt and her ashes buried. I didn’t care to know where. All I cared about now was Jordan and my unborn child, who despite my worst fears, was still alive, although barely. It was all up to Jordan and her wolf now. There was nothing more I could do and it grieved me.
“How is she?” asked Thomas quietly as he came inside and viewed Jordan with a sigh.
“No change” I answered dully “still unconscious and they don’t know when or if she will come out of it. Our Daughter is still clinging onto life but that too, could change if Jordan’s condition worsens.”
My voice cracked. I blinked back tears. I was overwrought. I had even given my blood, in an attempt to bring her out of this but it hadn’t made a slight bit of difference. Or if it had, it had been minuscule instead of the miracle I had hoped for. What Stefanie had failed to disclose was that the arrow which had been sent into Jordan’s body, had also been doused in poison beforehand, sending it directly into her bloodstream. My blood had probably managed to ward it off, but it had come at a cost and right now her body was struggling to recover.
“I’m so sorry,” Thomas said quietly “All our prayers and thoughts are with you Alpha Blaze. Is there anything you need?” he asked, handing me a bag with coffee and a muffin in it.
I shook my head, looking at him gratefully. I tore into the muffin and sipped the coffee, feeling it rejuvenate me. I would not rest easy until I had my mate back in my arms again and by my side. However long that would take. Lucifer was in full agreement, beside himself.
I want mate! I want mate! Why won’t she wake up moaned Lucifer why did we leave her like that? He was full of remorse. We thought it was the right thing to do. The important this is she’s still alive Lucifer, she can still get through this. We just have to wait and see. I was trying to be optimistic. It wasn’t working.
I just want to hold her. I miss her. I miss Lilith. I can’t get through to her wolf either. What if something is wrong with Lilith? He demanded.
We won’t know until Jordan wakes up. I’m as lost as you are without our mate. But I’m not leaving her side again. Never. I won’t let her wake up alone, without us there.
Your damn right she’s not going to be waking up without somebody there. I just wish we’d gotten to her sooner or realized that Baxter was just a f*****g distraction to keep us from Jordan.
We were both fooled. I should have seen right through the façade and pathetic plan as well. You can’t just blame yourself. I blame me too.
There was the sound of a clearing of a throat. I glanced over to see my Aunt Claudia and Uncle Mike, distraught, grieving, tears in both their eyes. It hadn’t been easy for them to find out that Stefanie had died, and was gone for good, let alone what she had done to Jordan after they had left to go back to their pack. Aunt Claudia was holding a bunch of flowers in her hand. Initially, I thought they had known about Stefanie’s plans, as their departure had been suspicious to me, but they had visited Jordan almost every day and I had grown to see that they were sorry for everything that had occurred, their guilt evident on their faces. They had nothing to do with the attack, it was just a horrible coincidence and they were regretful they hadn’t stayed a little longer, knowing they might have been able to help fend off the hunters. “May we come in?” she whispered.
I inclined my head. They walked in quietly, baring their necks in submission respectfully and then Aunt Claudia carefully placed the beautiful bouquet of flowers on Jordan’s bedside table.
“I’m so sorry Alpha Blaze” she murmured as she took in the various machines and the IV line that Jordan was hooked up to “I hope that your mate will wake up and fully recover with time” she added sadly.
“Yes if there’s anything you need, please don’t hesitate to ask” Uncle Mike added, looking guilty again.
“Thank you but if you don’t mind I would really like to just be left alone with my mate,” I said distractedly.
I didn’t care if I was coming across as rude or not.
My Uncle and Aunt nodded, my Uncle taking my Aunt’s hand and gently pulling her out of the hospital room. “Well then, I shall also take my leave Alpha Blaze. Just mind-link me and I will come running” Thomas said gravely.
“I might want to shower this afternoon, but I’ll let you know after more food is brought,” I said downing the rest of the coffee.
He smiled tightly and nodded. I heard his footsteps fade away as he walked from the hospital room towards the main exit. I sighed and rubbed the stubble on my chin. I needed to shave as well. I just didn’t have the inclination to do it. I was barely holding onto my sanity as it was.
“Son of a b***h” exploded a voice and I turned to see none other than Alpha Jaxon in the doorway, a look of fury on his face as he stormed towards me. His hands were clenched into fists. His mate Alex was behind him, looking apologetic but making no move to stop him. I stood up abruptly, knocking over the chair, my own eyes blazing. I relished Alpha Jaxon hitting me if only to distract me from the pain in my heart.
“You” accused Jaxon, poking me in the chest hard, with his index finger “You did this to her, you bastard. You and that ******g sister of yours. We should never have left her with you” he accused.
“Jaxon,” Alex said, trying to come between us “Jaxon I get you’re angry but this isn’t the right way to go about this” he admonished his mate.
“Angry doesn’t cover it” spat Jaxon, gesturing to Jordan on the hospital bed, his eyes full of grief and sorrow “My best friend is on that f*****g hospital bed, almost dead, because of this asshole who failed to protect her from his own damn family.”
I inhaled sharply. I couldn’t even deny that he was wrong. I was guilty as charged. Jaxon took a swing at me and I, too upset to stop him, let his fist connect with my face, blackening my eye, as Alex grabbed his arm, before he could go any further. I wished Alex hadn’t. I deserved this pain. I deserved Jaxon’s hatred of me.
“Jaxon” he snapped “can’t you see he’s hurting. That’s his mate lying there. His mate” he emphasized “How do you think I would feel if you were lying there or vice versa?”
“Well for starters it wouldn’t happen because my family member tried to kill you” Jaxon spat out, glaring at me “Gods if I could wring you around the neck right now I would. You’re lucky Alex came with me” he growled.
“Enough” I hissed “I let you take that cheap shot at me but that doesn’t mean you get to stand here and continually offend me. I’m letting you stay for Jordan’s sake because I know how close the two of you are, but so help me, keep provoking me and I will rescind that privilege, regardless of whether you are an Alpha or not. Do you understand me?” I wanted to sit back next to Jordan, my eyes darting back to her.
Jaxon glowered, biting his lip so hard he drew blood. Alex rubbed his arm, trying to calm him down.
“We understand Alpha Blaze. Forgive Jaxon for being so reckless. He’s just extremely upset about Jordan” he said hastily.
“So am I” I grunted, turning away from them both and picking the chair up, angrily righting it the right way up again. I plonked myself back in the chair and observed them both moodily. I didn’t really want them there, but I knew Jordan would. The bond between her and Jaxon was so close that I was envious of it.
Jaxon cautiously approached the bed. He reached over and gently grabbed Jordan’s hand, his eyes shining. I narrowed mine. He looked close to tears. He rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand.
“Hey Jordan” he whispered, his voice slightly strangled “It’s Jaxon and Alex,” he said “We came as quick as we could. We had a little trouble with rogues back home, but it’s all sorted now,” he said thickly “Mother and father send their love. She didn’t want to travel so close to her due date and I guess you’re not too far behind her” he laughed, albeit a bit shakily ” Alex wanted to bring Clover but I told him no.”
Alex flushed and shuffled from one foot to the other. I just listened, feeling slightly guilty like I was intruding on a private moment, but not wanting to leave either. What if she woke up?
“We decided to postpone the wedding until you’re awake and better” Jaxon continued lightly “I can’t have my wedding without my best man,” he said teasingly as Alex smiled and came around the bed, holding onto Jordan’s other hand.
“Our best man” Alex corrected Jaxon with a shake of his head.
Jaxon gave him a watery smile.
“I appreciate that, but Jordan would hate that you delayed the wedding on her account,” I told them with a shake of my head.
“We don’t care,” Jaxon said staunchly “It’s not the same without her there.”
Alex nodded his agreement. I gave them a small smile. Alex pulled up a chair and Alex did the same. I moved my chair closer. I rubbed Jordan’s leg, feeling the warmth that always accompanied it.
“I need you to wake up sweetheart” I murmured, “your friends are here, and they want to see you. I want to see you. I want our baby to be okay. I want you to be okay.”
“We held mother’s baby shower the other day” Jaxon muttered with dry amusement “Needless to say it went as well as you can imagine. We had to play all sorts of horrible games and she had cupcakes with v*****s on them, v*****s Jordan. She has no shame” he huffed.
I stifled back my laughter. “We had to sniff diapers with melted chocolate in them and guess which kind it was” he continued wrinkling his nose “It was so disgusting. I almost lost my lunch” he complained. “Then, just as we thought we had run out of surprises, get this,” he said and his voice went up a few octaves “Mother and father announced they are moving out into a home of their own and leaving the pack house to Alex and I, as they are retiring from their leadership positions once we are properly married.”
I peered at Jordan’s face. Was it my imagination or had her eyelids just fluttered? Alex was looking at her face intently as well. Jaxon appeared to be oblivious. “Keep talking” I ordered Jaxon, never looking away from her “I swear she’s waking up.”
He continued to babble away about nonsensical things and suddenly Jordan’s eyes shot open and she let out a strangled gasp, as all of us crowded around her, our faces beaming.
“Jordan” I shouted as Jaxon moved away so I could cup her face in my hands “Thank god, oh thank god” I murmured, kissing her on the face as she looked up at me confused. The machines began to beep even louder and there were shouts from the doorway as Doctors and nurses began to pile in, Jordan reaching up to touch my face. “Blaze” she whispered, looking bewildered “what happened?”
