Alpha Blaze POV
“What do you suppose they are up to?” Jordan murmured to me as Alex and Jaxon mind-linked each other, sitting on the floor, their legs crossed, facing the bed and waving cheerfully at us both. “I mean, it’s like it’s something big and secretive” she muttered.
“Knowing those two it could be anything” I grumbled, slightly disgruntled that whatever it was, I wasn’t being included in it.
I handed her the paint samples, sitting on the bed beside her, nuzzling her neck as she giggled and swatted at me. It was good to see her in a good mood, despite having to sit propped up against pillows and not allowed to leave the bed, except to shower or do her business. Even then, she insisted on doing that herself and refused any offers of help, wanting to maintain what independence she could.
We were trying to decide on the color for the nursery. Jordan was adamant that the room was not to be pink. Lucifer and I silently agreed with that choice. Pink was a horrible color, especially when it came to painting walls. We wanted our daughter to feel like a princess, but not a pink one.
“What about like a nice blue, silver colour” Jordan commented, pushing a sample in front of me and smiling as I glanced at it.
“It’s nice,” I said, examining it “not too girly or too masculine.”
It was just right. Sort of like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, I thought amused.
“Exactly” she beamed “and it would go nice with all the nice baby furniture you and the boys went and bought,” she said a little grumpily, eyeing me and looking disgruntled.
Oh boy. I did not want to discuss the shopping trip that I’d had with Jaxon and Alex. As it was she’d picked out the stuff she wanted, we merely had to get it. At least that had been the plan. Somehow, we’d ended up with a bunch of decorative ornaments that Jordan hadn’t chosen, along with a gazillion stuffed toys and clothes that Jaxon and Alex pronounced too cute to ignore. I thought it was horrible going shopping with my sister but Jaxon and Alex took it to a whole other level. Thomas had thought it was hilarious when he saw the state I was in when we got back. I had been exhausted. Next time, I was sending Jaxon and Alex by themselves and staying with Jordan. Those boys were in their element when it came to shopping.
“I’m sorry” I apologized for what felt like the umpteenth time “I know it feels like you are missing out” I added remorsefully. Thomas had stayed with her but it wasn’t the same and I knew it.
She sighed. “It’s not your fault. I just feel bad. Jaxon and Alex were meant to be getting married tomorrow and they’ve postponed it because of me” she said, tears springing to her eyes.
s**t, she was going to cry again. She had become an emotional wreck the last few days. I stared at Alex and Jaxon, willing them to help me. Their eyes returned to normal and Jaxon got to his feet, leaping gracefully to her side with a wide smile on his face.
“Don’t fret baby cakes” he said, tweaking her nose as she blinked at him “We can get married anytime. I would much rather we spent time with you because you are important to me.”
“And me” called out Alex not to be outdone.
“And me” I muttered, trying not to sulk. Lucifer snorted, highly amused by my reaction.
Feeling a bit jealous of the attention she’s showing them, are we? Or is it because they are showing her so much affection that has you sulking like a little boy? He laughed.
They said they were only going to stay a few days and it’s been almost a whole week I said tetchily I know they are Jordan’s friends but when am I going to get any alone time with her? It’s not the same at nighttime. Sure, I get to hold her, but I want to talk to her and comfort her. Help her with anything she needs. Be there for her. Like a mate should be I told him crossly, sounding petulant.
You just want to be the main man in her life. Geez you really are jealous. Of two gay men Lucifer crowed, swishing his tail and looking gleeful.
No, I’m not. I just miss her a little bit that’s all I said sourly, denying it.
Jealous. Totally jealous. You could always kick them out you know. I mean it would be inhospitable towards another Alpha and would probably make Jordan mad at you, but it is an option. I guess you wouldn’t get your alone time though if she was mad at you though, would you? Lucifer murmured thoughtfully, his head c****d to the side, a smirk on his face. He was enjoying this immensely. Bastard.
No kidding I hissed now you can see why I’m stuck playing the host to Jordan’s friends. The last thing I need is for her to get mad at me or upset. She’ll think I’m a complete asshole if I try to turf them out.
Well technically that would be a d**k move to be fair Lucifer said smugly these guys have been nothing but nice to you. Besides it’s not like they are making any moves on her or googly eyes at her. Their relationship is strictly one of friendship. I seriously think you’re feeling a bit insecure man. Do you need to talk about it? His tone was serious. Because I’m here if you need me and I’m always up for a chat, you know if you’re feeling down or just need to talk to somebody he added, sounding concerned.
No I do not need to talk about it I hissed and I am not insecure thank you very much.
Yeah bro, keep telling yourself that. But me thinks that you doth protest too much he said laughing as I scowled at him. It’s such a pleasure talking to you Lucifer I snarled.
He chuckled, not fazed by my anger in the slightest. I sighed.
“I think the silver, blue colour looks lovely,” I told her “If that’s the color you want then we can ensure that the nursery is painted within the next day or two.”
She nodded biting her lip and promptly showing an interested Jaxon the paint sample while I plopped back on the bed and ran a hand up and down her arm tenderly.
“I think that a darker grey would look nice as well, maybe a rug to go in the room and matching bedding?” suggested Jaxon smoothly as Alex came up to look, nodding his own approval.
Great. Now he was better at interior decorating than I was. Was there anything Jaxon couldn’t do? I debated throwing him through the window and then discarded the idea. Jordan would be furious and I would have to fight Alex as well. Still, I gritted my teeth, enjoying the image it brought to mind.
Lucifer roared with laughter. Dude, get a grip on yourself. Since when do you care about decorating? It’s not a competition. “I like it” Jordan breathed, looking enthusiastic, gripping my hand “Do you think you can find one?” she asked hopefully. “Sure,” I said confidently. Come hell or high water I would find the perfect rug and bedding, if only to rub Jaxon’s smug face in it. Take that! Lucifer just shook his head at me, highly amused. I ignored him.
The doorbell rang downstairs. I was a little confused. It wasn’t like we were expecting anyone. I had asked everyone to stay away, to give myself and Jordan our privacy, what little of it we had, with Jaxon and Alex here.
“I’ll mind-link an omega to get the door” I muttered “Strange, we weren’t expecting anyone.”
Although maybe it was my Aunt Claudia and Uncle Mike? Come to visit us now we are home from the hospital. Strange they hadn’t phoned beforehand.
“No need,” Jaxon said hastily “We’ll go get it. We were about to go downstairs and get some food anyway. We’ll be back later,” he told Jordan, leaning over and pecking her on the cheek. Alex squeezed her hand and kissed her cheek, before they left through the doorway together, holding each other’s hands.
Jordan beamed. “Aren’t they adorable? They make the perfect couple. They are going to be such great fathers when they decide to have children” she said, rubbing her stomach.
“Yeah, adorable” I murmured, trying not to scowl.
She seemed oblivious to my frustration and exasperation. I could hear the front door opening and closing and wondered if Jaxon and Alex had invited visitors for some reason. The thought of it exasperated me.
Jordan tugged me closer. I put my arm around her protectively and she leaned into me, her hair tickling my neck. I inhaled her scent, feeling myself beginning to relax. She hummed under her breath, her hand on my chest, lightly stroking it. We were alone for once and I was in heaven. I stroked her hair, feeling the soft silkiness of her hair, listening to the sound of hers and our baby’s heartbeat. This was all I had longed for. A private moment with my girl. Was it really so much to ask for? Jordan sighed.
“Thank you,” she said simply, and I looked at her bewildered.
Why was she thanking me? I hadn’t done anything worth being thanked for. I was doing what was required of me, nothing more. Heck, there was so much more I could be doing. If she would only let me.
She snuggled against me even more. My grip tightened as my arm squeezed around her. She nestled against me, looking content. A wide smile on her face. It brought me joy to see her smile like that. It had been so long to see her smile like that at me.
“Thank you for what?” I asked her confused.
She looked at me with wonder in her eyes and I felt like I was ten feet tall. “I know that it hasn’t been easy for you, having Alex and Jaxon here, but I appreciate you putting up with them for my sake” she admitted in a low voice “I really enjoy their company and to be honest it’s keeping me from freaking out and panicking. It’s a good distraction for me.”
So, she hadn’t been completely oblivious to the tension in the room. Now I felt like a right bastard. I gave her a tight smile. “Jordan, I would do anything for you,” I said, tucking a stray tendril of her hair behind her ear as she sucked in a breath ” and if that means having your friends here for weeks on end,” I said this in a long-suffering voice that had her giggling out loud “then by all means I will. Because I love you. I want you to be happy. I will do anything that’s in my power to make that happen. Within reason” I added as she giggled again.
“Just being here with me, is enough but I do love that you have shown my friends the hospitality they deserve,” she said drily, raising an eyebrow.
I suspect she knows I was debating throwing them out. I gave her the most innocent look I could muster. She did not look so easily fooled. Damn.
“Of course, I would be hospitable,” I said feigning offense as she giggled again “What do you think I am? Some kind of heathen? A caveman? A vampire” I said shuddering as she laughed again, the sound musical and filling the room.
I grinned and leaned back against the bedhead. We heard footsteps coming towards us and I let out a long moan of disappointment that had Jordan giggling silently.
“Not fair” I pouted “I wanted to be alone with you for a bit longer.”
She giggled into her hands, trying to keep them in. She tried hard to put a straight face on as the door suddenly swung open. At first, it was difficult to comprehend what we were seeing. Jordan and I glanced at each other, shocked, not sure what was going on. Why were Alex and Jaxon dressed like that and was that….? No, it couldn’t be. I could also see Jaxon’s mother and father behind him and Alex, waving at Jordan with wide grins on their mouths.
“What on earth” I whispered, as Jaxon smirked.
“Time to get this show on the road” he declared, stepping forward with Alex, a minister right behind him.
What the hell had these two done now?
