                    Alpha Drake
My wolf was uneasy. I had never anticipated that my mate would turn out to be the Alpha’s daughter or I would not have been so hasty in dismissing her. What a mess. Now I faced either possibly disrespecting another Alpha by rejecting her, or accepting her and then putting her to the side when I got home. Neither option really appealed to me. I sighed, feeling a little moody. My wolf was pissed with me. Rightfully so.
You dumbass. How could you speak to our mate like that? She’s gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful. You’re no prize to look at yourself you know he sneered, insulting me.
Do you think insulting me is going to get you what you want?
No, but it makes me feel better. I can’t believe you. You’ve always been arrogant but this takes the cake.
May I remind you of what’s waiting at home? How exactly would I explain this if I were to bring our mate home?
You don’t explain anything. I told you not to make promises in the first place! You’re the i***t who chose to do it anyway. This is on you he snarled.
I fell silent. He was correct. But I had made a promise and it wasn’t one that could be broken lightly. I growled and grabbed a glass of champagne, swilling it down.
I glanced around the room, frowning when I noticed that my mate was no longer in attendance. I tried to shrug it off. What did I care anyway? It wasn’t my business what she was doing. But I had this awful feeling in my gut, one that wouldn’t disappear and my wolf was starting to get a little crazed. He gave a growl, causing me to still.
Mate is in danger he snarled I feel it. Drake, you need to go to her. Hurry he roared.
I put the glass down and hurried out of the marquee, my steps slowing as I sniffed the air, trying to place her scent.
I frowned. Why had she gone into the woods? It hadn’t been for a run, she was wolfless. I moved, fast, her scent getting stronger the deeper I went inside. I heard a scream and my heart skipped a beat. It was her voice. I felt rage shoot through me. I moved, stopping in my tracks as I saw a man, on top of my mate as she struggled to get away from him, her body practically naked as she cried.
“You son of a b***h” I roared, striding forward as the guy’s eyes widened and he tried to scramble off her.
I gripped him around the neck, flinging him off her. He got to his feet. His eyes were bulging as he realized he had angered an Alpha. Josie remained where she was, sobbing loudly. I spared her a glance, feeling torn. The guy began to babble. “It’s not what you think” he started “she wanted to…”
My eyes flashed. I strode forward and punched him, hard, sending him to the floor. I got on top of him, punching him wildly, his face quickly becoming bruised and blood.
“She wanted it?” I said dangerously quiet “you just tried to rape her” I snarled, hearing Josie weeping behind me, the sound causing me to feel stricken.
Why hadn’t I kept a closer eye on her in the marquee? I had my suspicions that the only reason she had even gone into the woods with this guy in the first place was because of me.
The guy let out a strangled sound. He was spitting blood. Josie shrieked “stop you’ll kill him” in a panic, scrambling to sit up, tears trailing down her cheeks.
“It’s no less than he deserves” I roared, standing up and gripping him around the neck, my grip tightening so he couldn’t breathe.
Josie’s eyes were wide. She looked as though she was hyperventilating. I heard a voice behind me. “What on earth is going on here” as Alpha Blaze came forward and then a sharp inhalation of breath “Josie” he cried, rushing forward.
He embraced her and then quickly shrugged out of his shirt, putting it on her as she sat there trembling violently. I looked directly at the Alpha. “This bastard was on top her” I hissed, as Alpha Blaze stood back up, a murderous expression on his face, the man still clawing at my hands in a desperate bid to breathe, his legs flailing and kicking “she was trying to get him to stop” I growled.
One quick move and the guy’s neck would snap. My mouth salivated just thinking about it. Josie cried, while her father strode forward, a vicious gleam in his eyes. The young man cringed, realizing who the Alpha was.
“You touched my daughter,” he said quietly as I held on “my daughter” he thundered.
The young man didn’t stand a chance. Alpha Blaze grabbed his head and twisted it with a murderous expression. His neck snapped. I dropped the man to the ground and stomped on his skull for good measure, my wolf still feeling vicious and furious.
Alpha Blaze crouched in front of Josie as I joined him. Her teeth were chattering and her lips were tinged blue. Her hair was wild, with twigs and leaves sticking out of it.
“Josie” the Alpha said, his voice very soft and very gentle “honey, it’s okay, you’re safe now. Did he…” he trailed off, unable to find the words.
Josie stared at us wide-eyed and then slowly shook her head, her eyes dulled.
Relief flooded through me. I had gotten there in time then. I still hated myself though. Alpha Blaze stroked her hair. He was treating her as though he was trying to tame a wild animal. She flinched. He looked hurt.
I reached down and touched her softly, before embracing her as she sobbed into my shoulder. Alpha Blaze’s eyes were wide. “Why would she let you touch her?” he asked gruffly “and not me? It makes no sense, not unless…” he trailed off and shot me a look as I slowly stood up, gathering Josie in my arms.
“She’s your mate” he said, standing up, his eyes narrowed “and you didn’t mention it when I spoke to you both earlier. Why?”
I looked down at the girl in my arms who continued to shiver, clutching at me tightly, refusing to let go. I sighed. My wolf was becoming overprotective of her already, tingles running down my body. I felt an intense need to protect her and knew the mate bond was being established. I cleared my throat and looked at Alpha Blaze firmly.
“Now is not the time to discuss that,” I told him, gesturing to the frail-looking girl in my arms “I think she might be going into shock” I explained tightly.
He glared at me and clenched his jaw, before exhaling. “Follow me” he snarled “I’ll lead you to the hospital wing. I’ll have to mind-link my wife on the way” he added grimly and I did not feel envious of him at all.
I hoisted Josie a little higher and followed Alpha Blaze out of the woods, Josie feeling light as a feather in my arms. She snuggled against me and I tried not to groan as her scent drifted into my nostrils. My steps were steady as I began the trek towards the hospital, Josie secure in my arms, while my mind whirled with what to do. Could I abandon my mate after this? Would the treaty be dissolved due to my actions tonight? I wouldn’t know until Josie was alright, Alpha Blaze’s concern for his daughter plain to see. His love for his daughter shone from his eyes. It wasn’t going to be easy to convince this man to allow me to reject his daughter, which only really left me with one alternative path to take.
