                    Josie POV
I knew I shouldn’t have gone running into the woods. As I stood there, being defended by the most handsome grey and white wolf I had ever seen, I instinctively knew that it was Rohan, and the knowledge both thrilled and saddened me. My mate, the Alpha had not seen fit to come to my aid and it hurt, more than I could bear. I truly was worth nothing to him. More than nothing. He was willing to put my life on the line in order to be free of me. I wanted to cry, but my fear overwhelmed me and all I could do, was watch in horror as Rohan dispatched the first rogue that tried to attack, standing directly in front of me in order to protect me.
We were down to only two, but my heartbeat accelerated at the realization that one could slip past Rohan and he wouldn’t be able to fight it while still taking care of the other. It wasn’t stopping him from trying though. He snarled at the rogues, his gaze never wavering. It brought tears to my eyes. This man, who barely knew me, was willing to protect me, even though he might end up killed in the process. The Alpha was nowhere to be seen. Other wolves came out of the trees, patrol, quickly helping Rohan to dispatch the rogues, the fight becoming a bloodbath as they were ruthlessly executed and torn to shreds in front of my eyes. Blood splattered everywhere. I felt nausea. I became lightheaded. There was so much blood. I swallowed hard. These men shouldn’t have had to fight, but because I had been so stupid, they had been forced
to.
They all paused. I noticed their eyes going cloudy. They were mind-linking between each other. I had no idea what was said, but the other wolves slowly left, until it was just Rohan’s wolf and myself left back in the small clearing. His wolf turned and looked directly at me as I flinched. Now would come the lecture for being so foolish, I waited for him to shift and hurl accusations at me and it would be well deserved. Silence. I tensed. His wolf slowly came forward until it stood a few steps from me. It sniffed, its eyes wide and shining. Wait a minute. He wasn’t mad? The wolf nudged my arm and I reached out and patted it on it’s head as it gave a low growl, making me giggle slightly.
“You’re gorgeous” I whispered and I swore it tilted its head up proudly.
I stroked its fur, my body beginning to relax. The wolf grinned, making it look mischevious and slightly devilish. I noticed it didn’t walk with a limp, making me curious, my mind flooding with questions. It sat, staring at me and the slowly lowered itself, its head turning. I hesitated. What did it want from me. It looked impatient, motioning with its head. Realization dawned.
“You want me to ride you?” I said blushing.
I was a little apprehensive about my weight but the wolf was nodding, watching me carefully. I walked forward and he nudged me.
I slowly climbed on. To my surprise, the wolf lifted itself off the ground with ease and I clung to it’s neck as it slowly began to run. It was exhilerating. The wind blew through my hair and the breeze was refreshing and rejuvenating. For a moment, I forgot about everything as I enjoyed the run, everything beginning to pass by in a blur as we ran even faster. My hips rocked back and forth, the sensation pleasurable and I blushed as I felt myself becoming slightly aroused. I prayed he didn’t notice. The wolf seemed to go even faster, causing me to shriek.
We made it back to the packhouse grounds. The wolf very gingerly lay down and I climbed off, my legs shaking from the experience. I felt myself collapse, sitting on the ground. The sound of bones cracking and adjusting had me look away blushing. I could hear the sounds of clothes being put on and then a hand gripped my chin, raising my eyes to stare into his dark ones. I gulped. But they were filled with nothing but concern and something else I couldn’t put my finger on. “Are you alright? You weren’t harmed were you? I smelt blood” he added as I looked at him confused.
Oh. The large gash on my leg when I fell, I thought, quietly showing him. His eyes narrowed. “We need to get that cleaned up before it gets infected, seeing as you don’t have your wolf” he said gruffly.
His hand gripped me around the arm and he yanked me upright. I was astounded at the strength he possessed. “What about you?” I asked biting my lip “I mean, thank you for saving me” I added hastily as he glanced at me, “I’m sorry that you had to” I added lamely.
“Don’t apologize. I can’t blame you for wanting to escape from the cruel words you were subjected to” he said harshly “and as for saving you, what kind of person would I be if I left you out there to die?”
Silence. I wisely refrained from pointing out that Alpha Drake had not come looking for me. His hand gripped me around the waist. I realized he was using me as support because he didn’t have his cane and felt bad. I immediately gripped him around the waist. “Do you want me to get your cane?”
We made it inside. He grabbed one from inside the door and let go. I felt disappointed. “I have loads around the pack house” he grunted, beginning to limp upstairs “there’s a first aid kit in your room” he added.
I followed, aware that the pack house was quiet. He reached my room and sat down on the bed. “First aid kit’s in the bathroom” he said quietly.
I went and fetched it, bringing it back to him. He began to pull out bandages and antiseptic. I blanched. He saw and gave me a wry grin that made him look even more handsome. My heart skipped a beat. Damn. Rohan had me feeling like I was the only girl in the world and the more he treated me like this, the more attracted to him I was. He made me sit and stretch my leg out. “This will hurt” he warned and promptly poured on antiseptic as I gave a small cry, before beginning to bandage my leg, looking apologetic.
“Sorry” he muttered “I forget that it stings so badly.”
I gave him a tremulous smile. “It’s okay, thank you for helping me.”
He narrowed his eyes and continued working, until the bandage fully covered the wound and was tied tightly. “Done” he said looking satisfied “I hope that you heal quickly, even without a wolf” he said with curiosity.
“I do” I admitted “just not as quickly as those with one. Still quicker than humans” I added.
He nodded, getting to his feet. I stood back up and watched as he began to make his way out of the room. Was he really going to leave? I bit my lip. I reached out to grab his hand stopping him in his tracks.
His eyes widened. “Josie” he said, turning and then before I could stop myself I reached up and kissed him, right on the lips, feeling like an explosion lit inside of me.
He seemed shocked, before his lips pressed back with eager abandon, my mouth yielding to his assertiveness, his mouth beginning to dominate mine. I felt his tongue demand access and willingly parted my lips, his tongue caressing the inside of my mouth and causing me to moan in pleasure. God, I didn’t want it to end. My body was pulsating with little electric shocks. I wanted more. So much more. I felt like my body was on fire. What was going on? Did I have the mate bond with the Gamma as well? Was that possible?
Hope flared inside of me. If that were true, would Rohan want me? He pulled back, his eyes dark and flaring. He reluctantly pulled away from me and I stared at him confused. He groaned. “I’m sorry” he said, his voice filled with regret “but you are meant to be Alpha Drake’s mate” he explained, running a hand through his hair shakily.
“But he doesn’t want me” I burst out “and I feel the tingles and the sparks with you. Why?”
“I don’t know” Gamma Rohan whispered, confusion on his own face “normally one would only feel the second chance
mate once they had rejected their first mate but you haven’t done that, so it shouldn’t be possible.”
Tears shimmered in my eyes. I could feel myself becoming emotional but there was one thing I needed to know. One thing that he needed to tell me.
“If we are mates, would you want me?” My voice was tearful as I waited for the answer.
