Jordan POV
Gym class. My foe. I could feel my heart racing as I changed into the uniform, gym shorts, and an overflowing shirt, feeling uncomfortable with the looks being shot my way. Damnit Jaxon, I cursed, can’t you see they hate me more than ever now? The other girls watched me suspiciously. What did they think I was going to do, turn around and bite their necks like a vampire?
“Maybe she got a witch to put a spell on him” I heard Mirabel whisper to Cordelia, her voice carrying in the locker room.
“That makes sense” Cordelia hissed, her eyes blazing as I inwardly scoffed at how ridiculous they were “How else would she have managed to nab a guy like that? They don’t exactly mesh with each other. He’s gorgeous and she’s just plain and ordinary.”
Great. Any minute now they were going to accuse me of being a witch. I pictured what happened in Salem and could see it happening here. I shuddered. I was too young to die by being burned alive.
“Maybe she’s a part witch?” Mirabel suggested.
There it was. I’d called it.
As if I thought scornfully. If I was a witch, they would have all been turned into rats by now. How ridiculous. Still, the girls were nodding at each other. I wanted to smack my head against the wall. Instead, I took deep breaths and hobbled out to the gym, where the gym teacher, Mrs Roberts was waiting impatiently, clipboard in hand. I wondered what sort of torture she had devised for us today. In the distance, Jaxon gave me a friendly wave from where he was sitting with a group of guys who all turned to look at me. I blushed bright red and looked away as the other girls came and sat down, looking glum and upset. Several of them openly eyed Jaxon, practically drooling at the mouth as they watched him running.
“Good morning, everyone,” Mrs Roberts said briskly.
“Good morning Mrs. Roberts” we chorused back obediently.
She was a large woman and scared the bejeezus out of us. She didn’t suffer fools lightly and she was ruthless when it came to making you participate. Have you ever seen the film Matilda and the principal’s name is Mrs. Trunchbull? She reminds me of that woman. She has the same evil glinting eyes and everything. In fact, they could almost be sisters.
“I see that everyone is here today” she drawled, consulting her clipboard “And you all look so happy to be here,” she said sarcastically. We all forced fake smiles on our faces. She looked slightly appeased by that.
Just tell us what we’re doing today, I thought as all sorts of horrible images came to mind. The tension was unbearable. I could see Jaxon and the boys doing drills and running laps in the distance and winced. Mrs. Roberts cleared her throat “I have a team-building exercise for you” she began and everybody groaned out loud “We’re going to play in teams and we’re going to be playing soccer.”
I recoiled. Soccer. The sport where you kicked the ball across a field and into a goalpost. Already I could picture myself collapsed on the ground, repeatedly getting kicked in the head by the ball. I swallowed hard. The thought of having to do more running was enough to make me feel lightheaded. Jaxon’s comment about faking an injury was looking more and more promising. Too bad you had to have a limb severed or something extreme before Mrs. Roberts would permit you to go to the nurse’s office. She’d once made a girl with a broken leg continue with netball because she figured the girl would heal eventually and didn’t want to waste the nurse’s time. That and she thought the girl was faking. Turns out she wasn’t.
“Off to the soccer field,” Mrs. Roberts cheered as we all stood up and filed out of the gymnasium. The field was outside and there was a light sprinkling of rain as we stood there, huddled in a group. One by one she declared what team we were on. Somehow I wasn’t surprised to be the last one and headed to my group of girls with a sigh. None of them would even look at me. They knew how hopeless I was at sports. We split up and I automatically went to the back of the field. It was my hope that Mrs. Roberts would forget I was even there. I tried to make myself look as small as possible. She blew the whistle and everybody around me began to move. My head whipped back and forth as the ball traveled between players, constantly stolen by the opposite team.
“Jordan stop standing there looking like a bowling skittle and move” roared Mrs Roberts pointing angrily at me.
Damn, she’d seen me. I cringed and began to lightly jog, my breasts bouncing uncomfortably as I headed toward the middle of the field. My breasts were so big that even sports bras struggled to contain them.
The ball came towards me and I kicked it, the other team intercepting it and heading towards their goal. I groaned, as the weather turned worse and it began to rain harder. My teeth chattered. The other girls looked just as miserable. It was getting cold. Mrs. Roberts looked unphased, her mouth in a hard line. Our sneakers got spattered in mud. It was getting slippery outside. I noticed with a scowl that the boys were still inside the gym, where it was nice and warm. Lucky bastards. Jaxon was probably laughing it up at the thought of me out here, getting soaking wet.
The whistle blew again. “Time to run laps” shouted Mrs Roberts and everyone groaned again.
“Is she for real” complained one girl out loud.
“Yes I am” Mrs Roberts yelled and the girl blushed “For that, you get to do another lap. I want ten from the rest of you, and you’re going to do eleven,” she told the girl.
The girl’s mouth dropped open but she didn’t dare argue with Mrs Roberts. We all reluctantly headed towards the track and began to take off. I was slow, my muscles protesting. Soon enough I was at the back of the pack, staring dismally as they got further in the distance.
“Pick up the pace Jordan” growled Mrs. Roberts, “I don’t have all day” she snapped.
I didn’t see her f*****g running, I thought a bit viciously.
I picked up the pace, my breathing shallow as I panted. God this was hell. My lungs burned as I tried to frantically draw in air. My vision swam. Oh no. This couldn’t be happening. I was staggering. Before anyone could move, I fainted, dropping right to the ground as Mrs. Roberts gave a shocked yell in surprise.
I felt strong arms grab me from the ground and cradle me. I had to be dead, I thought hazily. Who had the strength to pick me up and carry me as though I was as light as a feather?
“Am I dead” I breathed, my vision slowly coming back into focus, my heartbeat returning to normal.
A small grunt. “You’re not dead” came the voice and I stiffened in shock. I knew that voice. It was familiar to me. But what was he doing out here? More importantly, why did he sound so concerned?
Grant’s face swam into view. I gasped in shock. His eyes were dark as he glanced down at me. “Stop wriggling or I’ll drop you” he growled.
I stilled. The other girls watched in silence, all of them awestruck by Grant. “I um, I think I can walk” I breathed.
He shook his head. “You just fainted” he snarled “I’m taking you to the nurse’s office. Now shut up and let me take you” he hissed.
I fell silent. I was unaccustomed to Grant acting this way toward me. It wasn’t normal. Part of me dreaded Sarah hearing about this because I was almost a hundred percent sure that they were an item.
We walked through the gym. I saw Jaxon look at us anxiously. He ran up. “Are you alright, what happened?” he asked. Grant’s face hardened. “She fainted. I’m taking her to the nurse” he scowled “Do you mind.”
Jaxon looked at me. “I’m alright” I whispered, leaning my head against Grant’s chest. “I’ll talk to you later” I added.
He looked hesitant but then Grant gave another growl and he reluctantly backed off, confusion in his eyes. Why was Grant acting so protective of me? It didn’t make sense. Not to mention his aggression towards Jaxon. Sure, Alpha’s were competitive and didn’t like sharing their territory but the school was a neutral place.
A student rushed to open the gymnasium door and Grant gave a small nod of thanks, before walking down the hallway with me. Thank god, that everyone was still in class. Somehow I don’t think that Grant wants to be seen with me. As it is I feel warmth in his arms where he holds me and I instinctively snuggle against him before stiffening, waiting for him to object or get angry. Instead, he just tightens his jaw and then heads into the nurse’s office. The nurse gets to her feet immediately, as Grant places me gently on the bed.
“Alpha Grant,” the nurse said with a smile “How can I help you?” she asked, deliberately ignoring me.
Like hello, I’m lying on the bed and Grant is uninjured. I’m pretty sure his c**k didn’t need a massage, I thought sourly as the woman eyed him up and down.
Grant motioned towards me “Jordan fainted on the grass outside in the rain. Check her over” he said gruffly “and make sure she’s okay.”
The nurse looked disappointed, flipping her long blonde hair over her shoulder and pouting slightly. Grant seemed to be oblivious to it. She grudgingly got a blood pressure monitor out and placed the cuff around me to check it.
“Have you eaten today?” asked the nurse.
“Yes,” I answered truthfully. My father never denied me food on the days I had training for fear this would happen in front of the other pack members.
She gave a huff. “What were you doing when you fainted” she snapped as Grant folded his arms and watched with a brooding expression on his face.
Seriously what was his problem? He could just leave. It’s not like he was being forced to stay.
I bowed my head, feeling embarrassed. “I was running” I whispered and the nurse’s eyes lit up triumphantly.
“You overdid it and your heart must have become strained,” she said bluntly “Your weight is causing you issues.” Tears pricked my eyes. I couldn’t bring myself to look Grant in the eyes. A flush appeared on my cheeks.
“Is she okay” burst out Grant impatiently.
“She’ll be fine. She just needs rest and maybe some fluids” answered the nurse.
Grant gave me a searching look. The song I Want to Be a macho man drifted unconsciously into my mind and I had to fight back a giggle.
“See that she gets it” he snarled and then turned on his heel and walked away, the nurse sniffing in disapproval as she turned to eye me. What was it with these Alpha men? Both of them were suddenly showing an interest in me, and while Jaxon’s was purely platonic and friendship, Grant was, well Grant’s interest was a conundrum. I thought he hated me?
