                    Josie POV
I felt his hand gripping my neck and his breath in my ear as he dragged me, slowly, deliberately, towards the dungeon, a sinister smile on his face. The other woman, Claudia? stared mutely from the stairs, a stunned expression on her face, the color drained from it as I screamed for her to help me, only to be gagged as he pressed his massive hand over my mouth. My stomach roiled as we headed down, to the basement, my arms and legs kicking wildly.
“Let me go” I screamed, the sound muffled as he chuckled.
“Never” he whispered, his voice so chilling and final that it brought tears to my eyes.
I feared for Rohan. What had they done to him? Had they hurt him? Why was Alpha Drake acting so aggressively when I had done what he wanted in the first place? I could feel my terror and my frustration growing. He kicked the door to the basement open and shoved me inside, my hands instinctively clutching at the railing, my eyes blinking against the darkness, as my legs quivered.
“Move” his voice was quiet but nonetheless persuasive.
I forced my legs to move, one step at a time, until I reached the foot of the stairs, heading towards the scent wafting towards me. Rohan’s scent. I could feel tears gathering in my eyes again as I fought the urge to break down and cry, my whole body shaking violently.
I reached the cell and my eyes widened. He was chained, his hands hoisted above his head, his shirt torn to show his bare chest and back, his eyes tired and glazed, presumably due to the drugs he’d been given. I swallowed hard, rushing forward and touching the bars as I tried to put my hand through them, only to jump back as the silver burned me. I jumped back and heard Alpha Drake laugh out loud.
“Stupid girl” he taunted as I turned my head, only to see him come out of the shadows, a wicked grin on his face. He had two warriors with him. He nodded at me. “Hold her” he said softly.
My eyes widened as they swarmed towards me, grabbing my arms and forcing me to stand still, my eyes locked on Rohan.
“You think he’s your mate, don’t you?” Alpha Drake said cunningly, nodding towards Rohan who looked disorientated. “I know he is” I shot back angrily “you can’t make me take back the rejection” I hissed.
He smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. There was a trolley of various tools and implements by the cell and he studied it as my stomach began to churn. He picked up a large whip, letting its strands slide between his fingers, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully.
“I’m giving you one last chance to take back your rejection” he murmured, “before I make you.”
Rohan gave a strangled groan and then looked at me. “Don’t do it” he whispered in a shaky voice “Josie he just wants to use you.”
Use me? For what? Besides lending him strength what good was I? I didn’t even have a wolf, did I? Alpha Drake smirked. “I’m waiting Josie” he sang, still lightly touching the whip, his eyes fixated on me.
I couldn’t answer. Part of me hoped this was some sort of sick joke, that he wasn’t capable of extending such cruelty, especially to his own Gamma but the longer I stared at him, the more his eyes darkened and the more he seemed off. He reached out and stroked my face, making me jolt back, and gave a chuckle.
He used a key to open the cell door, ignoring the bars that slightly burned his flesh, taking position behind Rohan who was looking at me.
“Look away” he mouthed, but I couldn’t bring myself to.
Alpha Drake deliberately eyed me and then he raised his arm and brought the whip down, sending Rohan’s body surging forward with the intensity of the strike, his mouth pursing in pain. He did not cry out, but it was as though I felt the excruciating pain with him as my back began to burn and I began to sob.
“Don’t look” Rohan choked out, his eyes sliding back to me.
Whack. Another whip across his back. I saw blood trickling down his bare skin and sobbed harder as my own back felt like it was on fire.
I wanted it to stop. I couldn’t bear to see Rohan being hurt like this. Not for something I had done. His face was expressionless as Alpha Drake hit him again and again, his only concern for me and I tried to go forward, only for the men holding me to grip me tighter, forcing me to remain in place.
“Stop it, stop it, you’re hurting him” I screamed, begging the Alpha to have mercy.
Alpha Drake brought the whip down again and I could feel anger building. My rage against what was happening was almost impalpable. I gritted my teeth, my skin feeling as though it was burning, the warriors dropping their holds on me with a sharp cry of pain. The Alpha stopped, his eyes narrowing as he looked at me.
My body shook. The heat intensified. The anger grew and I felt like I was going to explode. The warriors backed away. My head flung back and Rohan eyed me nervously. He looked afraid for me. Why? I collapsed to the ground, my chest tightening, struggling for breath. My whole body ached. What was happening to me? I felt like clawing at my own skin, ripping it off. It felt unnatural. I felt my ankle break and screamed in agony as it grew fur and readjusted. I was shifting! I couldn’t believe it. So much for not having a wolf! Had this traumatic event somehow brought it to the surface? My hands scrabbled at the ground. Alpha Drake looked triumphant, slowly letting the whip fall to the ground. I was in too much pain to notice, while Rohan looked defeated.
More broken bones and readjusting. I screamed, the pain seemingly never-ending, my crying growing louder. I heard Rohan’s voice in the background, hoarse, filled with pain “Josie, honey, don’t fight it, it will only hurt worse. You have to let it happen. Okay. I’m here, you’re going to be alright.”
Even locked up in a cell, the man thought of me first. My body rippled and I screamed and then there was nothing. Silence. I could breathe. I stood, looking down at my paws in awe. They were a majestic white. Pure white. So was my stomach. I was a white wolf, a rare and unique breed, something I had my mother’s lineage to thank for I guess. I suspected it had to do with her genes.
“I knew you would be a special wolf” growled Alpha Drake, moving around Rohan as he struggled against his restraints, a grim expression on his face “when my wolf insisted on keeping you, I knew there had to be a reason. Why else would he want a wolfless mutt, unless it was because her wolf had yet to come out?”
You’re correct in assuming that the trauma of seeing your second chance mate be hurt like that brought me to the surface a little earlier than planned. My name is Amber by the way and I am your wolf.
What do we do now? Rohan’s still in the cell and I don’t like the way that Alpha Drake is looking at us. He’s gone mad! Sometimes rejection can bring out the worst side of us, or the more aggressive and cruel side that is always lurking just beneath the surface. He may not have wanted you, or at least the human side might not have, but the wolf side did and the rejection tipped him over the edge. He is not going to stop until he gets what he wants and that’s you. What do I do?
If you want to live, attack while he’s not on guard.
It seemed as though we merged together and instinctively I leaped towards Alpha Drake who seemed stunned that we had dared attack. He shifted, but my wolf was faster and more agile, getting a few good swipes along his abdomen as he snarled. He jumped and I rolled underneath him, my claws gouging along his midsection and causing him to fall down to the ground, his gait weak as he faced me again. The warriors shifted but Alpha Drake was alerted to the sounds of more growls and howls coming from afar, the sounds of another pack coming to fight and he growled, before dashing off, his warriors following close behind. Whatever pack had come, they couldn’t have come at a better time. I dashed into the cell and used my claws to cut Rohan down from the hook on the ceiling. He collapsed against me as I nudged him with my nose.
“You’re beautiful” he whispered, wincing at the silver still around his wrists.
I spotted a key lying on the ground. It must have fallen out of the Alpha’s clothes when he shifted. I nudged it to Rohan who weakly undid his cuffs and dropped them to the floor. I sank to the floor and he looked at me in disbelief. “You want me to ride you?”
I nodded slowly.
He shook his head. I nodded again. He shook his head. I nodded again. It went like this for two minutes straight before he gave up and climbed on, swearing under his breath. I was grateful to note that his wounds were slowly knitting together and healing. I took off up the stairs, crashing into a formal dining room, and then leaped through a large glass window as Rohan put his arm up to protect his eyes.
I let out a ferocious roar as I took in the wolves fighting each other, the other pack easily defeating Alpha Drake’s while he began to make a run for it toward the forest. My father had come. I wasn’t about to let the bastard go but then Amber spoke, sounding apologetic as we sank to the floor and Rohan slid off me. Sorry doll, but shifting took too much out of us. We’re gonna have to stay out of this one.
Within moments I had collapsed and shifted to human form, falling deeply unconscious.
