Rohan POV
I saw her collapse to the ground and I staggered over to her, ignoring the pain in my back that was quickly fading, my wounds beginning to heal. Josie’s eyes were closed and she was breathing but she was unresponsive as I gently tried to shake her, ignoring the chaos that surrounded me. I had no doubts that the pack fighting Alpha Drake and our Black Moon Pack was Josies. Alpha Drake had gone too far this time.
“Josie” I murmured, feeling stricken.
I felt like a failure. I had failed to protect her. Even as the whip had hit my flesh, my only thoughts had been for her and the terror she must have felt as she’d been forced to watch. I stroked her hair, the fighting and the chaos seemingly fading away, and stiffened as I heard the distinct sound of somebody shifting into human form, his footsteps loud as he approached.
The man was an Alpha and his eyes were blazing. I glanced upwards, prepared to fight to protect her, but he looked at Josie on the ground with anger, a snarl on his face. “Josie” he whispered, looking aggrieved.
A woman came up beside him. She looked like Josie. This had to be her parents and they looked pissed. I didn’t blame them. However, when she looked at me, there was a soft smile on her face. She eyed me curiously.
“You’re mates,” she said bluntly, as I stared down at the ground.
I struggled awkwardly to my feet, wincing at how lame I must look with my limp and bent down to get Josie, the other man, the Alpha beating me to it.
“Forgive him, but he’s concerned about our daughter. I am Luna Jordan and this is Alpha Blaze. This pack has been taken over by us and is no longer Alpha Drake’s to command” Luna Jordan’s voice was quiet but filled with pure rage.
I blinked and glanced over the grounds. There were no casualties. Instead, my pack members were willingly kneeling on the ground, hands to their heads. There was no sign of that bastard Alpha Drake. I scowled.
“Where is he?”
Luna Jordan followed my gaze. “He got away from us in the melee. Our main priority was ensuring that Josie was safe.” “How did you know she was in danger?”
Alpha Blaze scoffed, still cradling his daughter, narrowing his eyes. “You people are stupid if you thought I would send something so precious as my daughter without also sending someone to spy at the same time. My daughter will always be under my watchful eye, no matter what. I’m only sorry that I didn’t get here sooner. I never anticipated that Alpha Drake would turn out to be such a miserable bastard” his tone was malicious “and when I get my hands on him, I’m going to show him exactly why he shouldn’t mess with me or my family.”
I had no doubts that the Alpha would carry out his threat. He turned and strode towards the pack house, casually entering the living room and placing his daughter onto the couch as I followed, limping behind.
“Are you mates?” Alpha Blaze asked, turning around and pinning me with a gaze.
“Yes, but I am not worthy of it,” I said gravely.
Luna Jordan snorted “Nonsense. I saw the way you looked at her, the way you tried to protect her. From all reports, you’ve been smitten with her since the first time you met. Why do you think you’re unworthy? Because of your leg?” she frowned at me.
I was impressed with the knowledge they seemed to possess. I wondered who they had sent to spy in our midst. Whoever it was, they had done a fine job. I glanced down at my leg and Alpha Blaze growled.
“My daughter does not judge people based on superficial things such as a crippled leg” he snapped “and all that matters to me is that you are a good man, which by all reports you are. Are you telling me that you don’t want her?”
His eyes glittered dangerously.
f**k. Was he treating me as though I was no better than Alpha Drake? Josie stirred, her eyes beginning to flutter and I limped to her side, grabbing her hand and squeezing it as her parents stepped closer to her.
“Rohan” she gasped, sitting upright and clutching onto me as I held her, inhaling that sweet scent of hers, relief on her face “thank god you’re alright. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t save you sooner” she sobbed “are you in pain?”
I wiped the tears away and sat on the end of the couch, still holding her hand. She looked up and gasped. “Mother, father, you came to get me?” she cried.
“Of course” her father snarled “do you think I would willingly let Alpha Drake just take you without having a backup in place? You and your siblings are more precious to me and your mother than any jewels or treasure.”
She sobbed as her parents leaned down and hugged her. “Did you get him?” she whispered, eyeing them both.
Alpha Blaze hesitated. “I’m sorry, he got away, but we’ll keep searching for him,” he said gruffly, his eyes filled with promise “he won’t get near you again. I’m sorry Josie, I should never have sent you here” he exhaled, looking guilty.
“I should never have agreed to it either” his wife cut in, looking ashamed “I guess I thought that maybe you would see your own worth and reject him before coming back.”
“That was your plan?” Josie said a little indignant.
Her mother’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. I felt envious of the love that they showed towards each other.
“I’m glad you sent me” Josie whispered, stunning us all.
“But, you’ve been abused and mistreated,” Alpha Blaze said in anger “and all because of our stubbornness.”
Josie shook her head, a small smile on her face. “If you didn’t send me here, I never would have met Gamma Rohan and learned I had another mate.”
“But I was useless to you” I burst out, dropping her hand, my face drooping “I couldn’t protect you. I couldn’t save you in the end. Do you have any idea how it felt, watching you cry as I was whipped and being helpless to stop it? It broke me in two Josie! You deserve someone much better than me. Someone stronger that can defend you better than a cripple can.”
My voice was filled with bitterness.
Josie reached out and grabbed my hand. “Rohan, please” she begged, her voice hoarse and slightly panicked “Please don’t talk like that. You’re the most gentle, kind, and caring man I’ve ever met. I might not have known you for long, but already I’ve fallen for you. Don’t talk about yourself like that. You’re not a cripple. I don’t care that you have an injured leg. I care about you” she said passionately, halting me in my tracks.
Before I could speak, she grabbed me by the chin and then kissed me, her lips gentle and insistent, causing me to grab the back of her neck with firm hands, my mouth becoming more demanding as I deepened the kiss, causing her to moan out loud. She was so beautiful. Inside and out. My wolf was delighted with her, angry that I had tried once more to turn her away from us and glad that I had failed again. She was stubborn. Another trait that I admired.
A cough interrupted us. “Honey, as much as I am happy for you, I think maybe it’s time that we all showered and found some clothes” her mother suggested wrily as we broke apart, Josie’s face quickly turning as red as a tomato as she realized that she was naked and so were her parents.
“What is going to happen to the pack?” I asked faintly “And to me?”
I was it’s Gamma after all.
“Everybody is being taken back to ours,” Alpha Blaze said firmly “Everyone will be required to declare their loyalty to me but nobody wanted to fight to the death so I would be surprised if anybody wanted to oppose me. It seems your Alpha wasn’t well-liked” he added darkly. “As for you, I can hardly punish my daughter’s mate who did his best to shield her from his own Alpha at the risk of his own life.”
Josie brightened. Alpha Blaze sighed “Shower, clothes, car, go home,” he said with a shrug, making it sound easy as he took his wife’s hand in his own, Luna Jordan giggling.”All in a day’s work” he mumbled, dragging her upstairs as she laughed out loud.
I stood, helping Josie to stand. Her cheeks were still bright red. I pointedly stared over her head, as I limped towards the stairs with her assisting me. “Are you upset?” she asked faintly as we began to head up them.
“About what?” I asked confused.
She bit her lip, looking adorable. I gave her a sidelong glance as we continued to climb “About going back to my father’s pack? No longer being a Gamma?” she said, avoiding my gaze.
I stopped, grabbed her, and looked straight into her eyes. “If you want me as your mate, then my home is wherever you are,” I told her fiercely “no matter what pack it is. As for being Gamma? I’m just happy being by your side” I growled, “and I won’t rest until Alpha Drake is captured and I know that you’re going to be safe from that bastard.”
