                    Rohan POV
The attack came out of nowhere but we were prepared. As I left Josie safely inside gathering Rose and Claudia to hole up in our room, I raced outside and shifted, joining in with my warriors who were desperately trying to keep the swarm of rogues back. There was a large number of them, all of them attacking from various directions in the forest and I took out two, tearing out their throats and leaving them to lie in a pool of their own blood, their eyes staring blankly at the ground as I raced to save another warrior from being severely injured by a rogue sneaking up on them. The fight was furious, and I was conscious of the time slipping by as it progressed. Every time we thought that we had finished them, more rogues came out of the woodwork.
It was infuriating. There was no sign of that bastard Alpha Drake but I knew he had to be behind this. I sidestepped a rogue’s attack and swiped at him, sending him crashing into a nearby tree. I heard the thud as his body hit the trunk and smashed to the ground. I snarled and moved fast, stomping on its skull and leaving it beaten to death, my eyes sweeping the forest for more. Finally, it seemed as though they had been defeated. But where was that asshole, Drake? Was he hiding? Why wouldn’t he come out and fight? I felt an inkling of the sense that something was wrong. I shifted back to human form and studied the rogues, sniffing. Nothing. I frowned. Another warrior, Colton, shifted to human form. I eyed him warily. “Did you or any of the other men catch wind of Alpha Drake’s scent?” I asked bluntly.
He shook his head. “No Alpha Rohan and we kept a close eye out for him. I could swear this attack would have been this doing but perhaps it was just a random one?”
“There were too many of them for it to be random and they were too coordinated and organized. He has to be out here somewhere.”
Josie’s in trouble! Go and check on mate! What if he used the tunnel, Rohan? We couldn’t find it but that didn’t mean it had been collapsed in!
“s**t” I swore, Colton’s eyes widening as he glanced at me with a questioning expression “I need to check on my Luna” I shouted and ran, my legs pumping furiously, weaving around the bodies that were scattered over the forest floor, my eyes focussed on the pack house and where I had last seen my mate.
Colton followed close behind. I burst through the front door, my heart racing. “Josie” I yelled “Josie if you’re there, please call out sweetheart” I cried, taking the stairs two at a time in my haste to get up there. Silence. My chest tightened in fear. I kicked down the door to the bedroom and stopped in my tracks. I couldn’t believe my eyes and for a moment I struggled to comprehend what I was seeing. Claudia’s body lay on the floor, her eyes blank. Instantly I could tell she was dead. Rose lay on the floor unconscious or at least I hoped that was the case. There was no sign of my mate, but there was a passageway that had been cleverly hidden behind a painting and no doubt plastered over that had prevented us from discovering it. I cursed, kneeling beside Rose and checking her pulse. It was there and I glanced at Colton whose expression was grim. “She needs the hospital” I said tightly, slowly picking her up and handing her to the warrior. “What are you going to do?” Colton asked, eyeing the passageway with concern.
We had no way of knowing where it led or if it led to another trap. To go in blindly would be foolish but the bastard had Josie and a headstart. I couldn’t just leave her in his clutches. I snarled, my temper rising as my helplessness continued to grow.
“He could have planted a trap inside that would collapse it, there could be all sorts of things in there” Colton said wisely “you could die if you tried to follow without checking” he pointed out as I scowled.
My wolf was going insane. He wanted to race in and save his mate. As did I, but we also understood Colton’s cautioning. “Get me Jensen” I said finally “he’s the best technology expert we have and the best hacker, but you didn’t hear it from me. I’m certain he’ll have some way of checking out this passageway so that we can determine if its safe.”
Colton nodded, mind-linking Jensen quickly as I paced around the room, my fury growing. Eventually, realizing I was still naked, I hastily grabbed some clothes and put them on, looking down at Claudia sadly. I had failed to protect her and grief hit me. She had saved my mate from Drake and had paid the ultimate price for it. She hadn’t deserved to die for it. My throat closed as I silently thanked her from the bottom of my heart.
“I promise that I’ll get him” I vowed to her and to Josie “I won’t rest until that bastard is dead” I growled.
Colton sighed and tightened his grip. “Jensen’s on his way” he said briefly “I’m taking Rose to the hospital and will be back” he added, turning and disappearing as I nodded and looked back at the passageway, my hands itching as I waited impatiently for Jensen to appear.
“Alpha Rohan?” a voice said nervously.
I turned my head and surveyed the tech expert with narrowed eyes as he anxiously stepped into the room. He adjusted his glasses and I motioned towards the passageway with frustration, Jensen’s eyes widening as he looked over at it, understanding the need for haste. “I need to know if this passageway is safe to go follow” I growled, running a hand through my hair in exasperation as Jensen nodded in understanding “and I also need to know where it leads and if there’s rogues waiting on the other side” I hissed.
Jensen swallowed hard “I have a few ways of determining how to do that” he squeaked, his voice becoming shrill “there’s…” he trailed off as I interrupted, not in the mood to hear him out.
“Do whatever way is fastest without compromising on safety” I said lowly “and Jensen do it fast. They have my luna and I’m not in the mood to be waiting around for hours.”
“Understood Alpha Rohan” he breathed, looking sympathetic and slightly angered himself “let me go and get my equipment then and I’ll get started right away” he promised.
Good. I barely noticed him leaving, my mind occupied on Josie and what she might be going through. It was killing me not knowing what Alpha Drake might be doing to my mate and I bit my lip so hard it began to bleed, the pain hardly noticeable in my anguish. I just needed Josie to hold on a little longer, until I could get to her. I had no doubts that Alpha Drake had something in store for her, or for us both and while she had a wolf now, I could smell faint traces of a herb in the air, one that smelt suspiciously like wolfsbane and I dreaded to think that she might be unable to shift or defend herself. I couldn’t mind-link her either, no matter how hard I tried, further confirming my suspicions. I’d tried outside before we entered the pack house and there had been no answer.
“Josie, I’m coming” I whispered as my wolf growled and snarled in my mind, pacing back and forth with a fury that outmatched mine, “I swear to you, I’m coming so don’t give up on me.
That bastard is going to get what’s coming to him. Just hold on a little longer” I said thickly, slamming my fist into the wall in frustration “a little longer and I’ll be there.” Jensen arrived with his equipment and I had never been more glad for a distraction in my entire life.
A few pack members followed behind him, holding a multitude of different things and I stepped back as he began to set up what he needed. Not long now and I would be in that passageway and racing towards my mate. I just needed Jensen to work his magic and from the looks of things, Jensen was about to do just that. I breathed a sigh of relief as Jensen began to direct his staff, the other pack members, his voice confident as his equipment began to slowly move cautiously into the passageway, checking for booby traps and mapping out the passageway’s direction. It took all I had to remain where I was, while Jensen performed the work required, my hands clenched into fists as I waited for the signal that I could move forward and claim my luna again.
