                    Josie POV
I stirred, feeling like I’d been run over by a monster truck, my head pounding as I blinked and then forced my eyes to remain open. It was dark and cold in the room I was laying in, the windows all boarded up with only narrow slits for the light to escape through. I sat upright and winced, feeling a burning sensation around my wrist. I glanced down and saw that it was shackled to a chain that was tied around a nearby radiator. Great. I tried to mind-link my wolf but there was no answer. Had I been drugged with more wolfsbane while I’d been unconscious or was this still the effects of the wolfsbane I’d already been given?
I put a hand to my aching head and glanced around in desperation. There had to be a way out of this. I could tell I was in a basement of some description, the room filled with furniture and various bits and pieces, none of which looked particularly helpful to me. I sniffed and wrinkled my nose. There were rogues here, a few of them judging by the repugnant smell that wafted towards me. So not all of them had been killed in the attack or some had remained behind wherever here was. The chain clinked loudly as I moved, standing upright and trying to head towards the furniture only to be stopped short, the chain not long enough to reach it. I swore out loud in exasperation.
I wondered if Rohan had realized I’d been taken yet. I remembered Claudia lying on the floor, her eyes staring at nothing and shuddered. The poor woman had died because she’d had the guts to save my life. For somebody who had claimed to love her, Alpha Drake had shown no remorse when it came to killing her for her so-called betrayal of him. Bastard.
I heard the sound of a door slowly creaking open, the sound ominous and enough to get my heartbeat racing. I swallowed hard, forcing my body to turn around, my hands shaking slightly. I was at a disadvantage, unable to shift and unable to communicate with my mate. I fought to keep my fear under control. I couldn’t let them see that I was afraid. They would only use it against me. A figure appeared in the doorway, large and hulking, a shadow in the darkness, bright light flooding in behind him. Instinctively I knew who it had to be. He seemed to take great pleasure in slowly descending each step, one by one, prolonging my agony, until he stood at the base of the stairs, his head c****d, his eyes watching me with interest as I stood there, waiting for him to speak, my eyes adjusting to the light and able to make out his features clearly.
Of course, it was Alpha Drake. His lips turned up in a smile as he observed me glowering at him. “You’re awake,” he said smugly.
I wanted to slap him. Every movement of my hand caused my skin to blister and burn. I hissed and then snarled at him, making him laugh in amusement. “What do you want Drake?” I snapped “Why have you dragged me out here?”
I would be damned if I showed weakness in front of him. His eyes glittered and he stepped closer, towering over me, his face inches from my own as I fought the urge to shrink back.
His eyes were so dark and glacial. I wasn’t even sure if it was him or his wolf I was speaking to. He licked his lips, raking his gaze over me and I felt revulsion sweep through me. How could I have ever thought that he was handsome or desired to be his mate? I must have been crazy. I could see the lust in his eyes and it shocked me to the core, making me feel vulnerable as he began to speak, his voice dangerously quiet and yet chilling at the same time.
“Isn’t it obvious what I want? I want my mate, Josie and that’s you” he said.
I shook my head in denial, refusing him “I’m not your mate anymore. I’m Rohan’s” I said shakily as he narrowed his eyes in anger “and when he gets here…”
He laughed “he has no idea where you are” he interrupted, “and even if he comes, I will kill him. He has never managed to beat me in training, so I doubt he’ll be capable in a real fight. You are mated to a weakling Josie, but that’s all about to change” he murmured.
“Rohan is a better man than you’ll ever be” I shouted, incensed “he’s kind, loving and strong. How dare you call him a weakling!”
He grinned. “That’s the sassiness I like to see. What a shame that you’re not going to be able to use your feistiness for much longer. I like my women to be obedient” he drawled and I stared at him in disbelief.
What was he going to do? Beat it out of me? Somehow I suspected he wasn’t above doing it and that’s what was terrifying. I gulped. “Drake, I can never be yours” I protested, trying to make him see sense “Rohan and I have marked each other. We have claimed each other for life. You can’t change that” I said heatedly.
He smirked. My heart began to sink. “Yes, you having his mark on you is slightly problematic” he breathed, sounding completely unfazed, “but I can fix that without a problem. It should have been my mark on you this entire time, after all. I want the power you will give me and my wolf. The strength we should have gotten when we claimed you for our own. Nothing is going to get in my way” he said, leaning forward and pushing back a loose tendril of my hair behind my ear, “not even Rohan’s mark.”
“What..what are you going to do?” I stammered, feeling queasy.
Drake gave a lazy smile, his hand reaching out and gripping my neck with tenderness, his fingers digging in slightly as I tried to claw at his hands. “Stop” I choked, as he gently moved my head to the side and exposed the creamy expanse of my neck to him. s**t. He wasn’t going to? Was he? No, no, no I couldn’t let him. I tried to push him away, but his grip tightened and I made a strangled sound.
He gave a long sniff. “So delicious” he murmured, his breath in my ear as I stiffened “You have such a delicious scent” he muttered as I bit my lip, sensing his mouth was close to my skin. He licked my neck, chuckling as I gave a cry. The bastard was enjoying himself, taking delight in my helplessness. I tried to hit him with my free hand and he grabbed it, breaking my wrist effortlessly as I screamed. He dropped my hand and I clutched it, sobbing, his attention back on my wrist. “Try to hurt me again and the punishment will be far worse,” he said sardonically “I told you that I like my women to be obedient.”
His thumb lightly stroked the nape of my neck as I willed my tears away. There was a thoughtful expression on his face. “After I do this we’ll have a celebration of our very own,” he said with relish “we’ll pretend it is your first time, like it should have been with me.”
First time? What was he talking about? Realization dawned and I felt myself wanting to vomit. No, no way. I would rather die than suffer through that with him. I tried once more to frantically get through to my wolf but there was still no answer. I felt defeated. Why couldn’t I get through to her? Where was Rohan? Was he coming? I could feel myself trembling all over and what was worse was that he could see it too.
“Scared little lamb” he taunted, his hand stopping at my collarbone, the other one still gripping my throat as I blinked at him, my chest tightening “don’t worry, this will only hurt for a minute” he added with satisfaction.
Before I could do anything or try to stop him, he let out a low growl and leaned forward, burying his canines into the nape of my neck as I screamed out loud from the pain shooting through my body. He bit in hard, determined to erase Rohan’s mark from me, neverending pain washing over me as I screamed and screamed, Drake finally pulling away and licking the wound, a look of triumph on his face as I panted, my body feeling like it was burning all over. I put a hand to my neck, tracing the outline of the new wolf, feeling sick and disgusted. Drake smiled, reaching into the pocket of his pants and retrieving a key and a syringe. “Now it’s time for that celebration,” he said quietly as I flinched and tried to back away, my body still reverberating with pain, covered in aches and bruises, “but let’s make sure you can’t shift first, shall we? I want to see how much you resist me when you don’t have a wolf to help make you brave. I have a feeling that without her, you’ll be very obedient and do whatever my heart desires, my precious little mate” he purred and began to advance on me as I shrank back, wishing that Rohan would magically appear and save me. Had the mark caused Rohan the same pain it had caused me? I dreaded to find out and I prayed he knew I hadn’t done it willingly.
