Jordan POV
Yawn. I had gotten so much rest today in the nurse’s office that it wasn’t funny. I was still in a state of disbelief about Grant though and what had been going through his mind when he’d carried me to the nurse’s office. I’d slept, the nurse looking pissed that the Alpha had ordered her to take care of me. I was sitting there, contemplating going to get my bag, which had been left in the girl’s locker room in the gym, when who should come storming into the nurse’s office but Sarah herself. Naturally, the nurse took that opportunity to excuse herself, I noticed with a scowl and a hint of apprehension.
Sarah looked pissed. Her eyes were blazing and her arms were folded over her chest. I stared at her confused. What had I done to make her angry now? I’d been in the nurse’s office most of the day. She stared at me and I sucked in a breath. She moved closer and I flinched. God, I hated this. I hated how much I feared her. My eyes widened as she drew back her hand and slapped me right across the face. Smack. I tasted blood in my mouth. She’d split my lip. I put a trembling hand to my lip and stared at her bewildered as she flipped her long dark hair over her shoulder.
“Why?” I whispered, “what did I do?” I cried out, wiping the back of my mouth.
“What did you do?” she sneered “You’re so f*****g obvious Jordan. As if you don’t know” she stated angrily, putting her hands on her hips.
I literally had no idea what she was talking about. Her eyes narrowed. I flinched, expecting another hit. “Do you really think by pretending to faint that you’ll get Grant interested in you, you pathetic slut?” she hissed, moving close again as I looked at her in shock “I know what you’re trying to do and it’s not going to work you little b***h. Grant’s mine, so stop trying to take him from me, because he’s never going to be interested in a loser like you” she snarled.
“I, I wasn’t” I stammered “I really did faint” I protested weakly.
She slapped me again. “Go near my boyfriend again, and I’ll make this look like it was nothing” she snarled “Stop making googly eyes at Grant, keep away from him” she warned me as tears pricked the corners of my eyes.
What in the hell was the matter with her? I didn’t make googly eyes at her precious boyfriend. Hell, if anything I ignored his entire existence. She was the insecure one. But I suspected anything I said wouldn’t make a difference. My face stung as I stared at her silently. Her lips were flattened and there was a look of contempt in her eyes. The contempt that I had seen my entire life, or so it felt like. I drew in a deep shuddering breath and watched the derision cross her face. “When are you going to realize that nobody wants you here? Why don’t you kill yourself and do us all a favor?” she hissed “No mate or yours is ever going to want someone who looks like you” she added, digging the knife in a little deeper as I stared at the floor.
She was right, I thought miserably. No man was going to want me, not looking like this. Judging by the expression on Sarah’s face, she knew she had me. A lone tear trailed down my cheek. Suddenly an angry voice sounded from the doorway.
“I want her here” it declared, sending Sarah’s head whipping round.
Jaxon stood there, my backpack in his hand, a fierce expression on his face. He moved into the room, crowding Sarah who backed away, the blood draining from her face. “I heard every single word you just said you b***h” he snapped “and if I didn’t think it would start a war between my pack and yours I would snap your neck right now. How someone as ugly on the inside as you is as pretty on the outside, I’ll never know. But ugly girls like you make me sick” he breathed “Now get the f**k out of here before I show you just how much I despise a girl like you.”
“You can’t talk to me like that” squeaked Sarah, her eyes darting to me and then back to him, a stunned expression on her face.
His eyes darkened. She gulped and then ran from the room. I almost laughed out loud. Jaxon smirked and then came over to me. He grabbed a tissue from the nurse’s desk and handed it to me. I wiped my eyes as he sat beside me.
“Don’t listen to a word she said” he snapped “bitches like her are just jealous” he advised.
I gave a small hiccup. “Jealous of what?” I asked miserably.
He groaned out loud. “I wish you could see how beautiful you were,” he said loudly “and when you get to my pack you’ll see exactly what I mean. Sarah might be pretty on the outside, but she doesn’t compare to you. It’s what’s on the inside that matters but you, you’re gorgeous on the inside and the outside” he breathed, grabbing me by the chin and looking into my eyes with determination.
I rolled my eyes. “Jaxon I think you’re laying it on a bit thick” I laughed.
He shook his head and then glanced at the empty room with a scowl on his face. “Where’s the nurse?” he asked pointedly. “She left when Sarah got here” I muttered, ducking my head.
His eyes darkened further. I gulped. His Alpha aura got stronger. The nurse, unfortunately, chose that moment to come sauntering back in. Her eyes widened when she saw Jaxon sitting with me and she gave him a long, slow, considering smile.
“Hi there” she greeted him casually “Is there something I can help you with?”
I looked on amused. This was the second alpha she had tried to hit on today and was going to be unsuccessful with. Jaxon gave her a cold smile that made her blink.
“If you ever leave the room again, so that my friend here can be hurt by another student, regardless if they are her sister or not” he emphasized, his voice dripping with malice “I won’t hesitate to kill you where you stand” he continued pleasantly as her mouth gaped open in shock.
I saw her eyes dart between us both as the blood drained from her face, drawing the wrong conclusion. “I um” she stammered “I didn’t know she was a friend of yours,” she said lamely.
“Now you do” growled Jaxon and she nodded.
“It won’t happen again” she whispered, her body trembling in the face of his anger.
Jaxon reached over and grabbed my hand, jumping to his feet and then helping me down from the bed as the nurse watched in fascination. “Come on,” he said calmly.
“Where are we going?” I asked confused, as he picked up my backpack for me and began to head toward the doorway” Jaxon” I protested, almost whining “I don’t want to go to class” I pouted.
He grinned. “Haven’t you been paying attention to the time?” he asked with a raised eyebrow as I shook my head “The last bell is about to ring. You missed out on all your classes today. Luckily I had the administration mark you as present for all of them” he boasted.
Wow. I’d never had somebody care for me like that. For a moment I was speechless. He’d gone to so much trouble for me. Then I eyed him suspiciously. He blinked.
“What are you expecting in return?” I asked bluntly.
He threw back his head and laughed. “Well you did make a promise to me and I expect you to uphold it,” he said blithely, tugging me out and down the hallway as I wracked my brain trying to remember what it was.
“I did?” I asked slowly.
“Yep,” he said cheerfully “we were going to your pack so that I could ask your father about you staying at my pack on Friday night?” he reminded me.
Oh s**t. He was deadly serious about that. I felt my stomach cramp. I swallowed hard. “Um but don’t you have other things to do?” I squeaked “I mean you are the Alpha of your pack, aren’t you? Aren’t you needed there?”
He shot me a look. “Nope. My father can hold the fort while I go to yours. Besides interpersonal relationships between other packs is very important” he said seriously “so I’m doing my job by meeting with the Gamma of your pack and possibly the Alpha and Luna.”
I didn’t have an answer for that. He smirked. I sighed. I let him pull me to my locker and pulled my books out of my backpack, putting them away as he did the same. The last bell rang and students began to file out of the classrooms and into the hallway, crowding it.
Jaxon put a hand on my shoulder and began to steer me through the crowd, his eyes twinkling with good humor. “I’ll drive of course” he declared.
Of course, I thought grumpily, my stomach tied in knots. This was such a bad idea. But I couldn’t exactly tell Jaxon that without giving away the reason why. Although he may have guessed considering what he’d seen Sarah capable of doing to me. I bit my lip and winced, feeling the pain as it started to bleed again. Jaxon hummed under his breath, leading me outside and walking me straight to his car.
He opened the passenger door and I slid inside before he handed me my backpack and firmly shut the door. I began to feel myself panicking. Breathe Jordan, breathe, I told myself. I felt nauseous. My father was going to be so pissed, I could tell. My body was tense. Jaxon hopped into the driver’s side and shot me a sidelong glance. “You alright?” he asked, ” you’re white as a sheet.”
“Yeah,” I said weakly “still a bit lightheaded I guess.”
He shook his head and tsked. “Well I’ll get you home in a jiffy,” he said smugly “I can’t wait to see what your pack looks like. I do have one question though,” he said turning to me, his dark eyes searching as I inhaled sharply, wondering what he was about to ask.
“Yes?” I blurted out, trying not to shake in fear.
“Why do you let Sarah treat you like that? Why do you let her be such a b***h to you?”
I slumped in relief. “She has her wolf and I don’t,” I said in a small voice “And well, it’s complicated” I shrugged.
He didn’t look impressed. “Jordan, you need to start standing up for yourself. Demand the respect you deserve. Most bullies are cowards” he said grimly “and the second you fight back they stop. Sarah is one of them. Don’t let her walk all over you” he continued, starting the car “because the more you let her, the worse she’ll get.”
I nodded automatically, my thoughts elsewhere as he pulled out of the parking lot and began to drive towards my pack. If only he knew, I thought bitterly, then he might realize that what he was asking me to do wasn’t as simple as he made it out to be. But that secret was mine and mine alone to keep and I wasn’t about to reveal the hard truth of what my life was like at home.
