Josie POV
She gave me a sadistic smile as I staggered back, gripping onto the bed, my nails digging in, pulling her mask off. “Did you miss me, Josie?” she asked tauntingly and I could feel myself becoming lightheaded, my body going limp and before I could answer, my body crashed to the floor with a sickening thud, Sandra’s face looming over me before darkness surrounded me and I knew no more.
I blinked, stirring, my head feeling like it was stuffed with cotton balls. I tried to move and found my hands and legs restrained tightly to the hospital bed. I looked around and saw that I was in a basement, broken hospital equipment left everywhere, and the stairs leading down rotted and even breaking. The room was covered in dust and looked as though it had been abandoned long ago. Sandra came walking over, a wide smile on her face as I desperately tugged at the restraints, my body still weak and depleted of energy.
“Ah, finally” she trilled, shaking her head “I was beginning to think you would never wake up” she added sounding a little annoyed.
“Where am I?” I asked, panicked.
“An abandoned part of the hospital. It was remodeled quite a few years ago and this is part of the older model. How do you think I managed to go undetected for so long?” she smirked “Few people even remember that the hospital was rebuilt and restructured.”
Her eyes gleamed with madness. Her hair was disheveled and her clothes, still consisting of the nurse’s outfit remained crumpled and were also now covered in dirt. She wheeled a trolley of implements into view.
“Why are you doing this?” I blurted out as she eyed me, a small smile on her lips “Sandra, please, what do you have to gain from this?”
She laughed a bitter sound that made me cringe. “Why do you think? No matter how hard I tried, Rohan never looked at me like I was more than a sister” she said with a sneer “Even when I tried to get close to him through Renae, he ignored me in favor of her and her f*****g dramatics when it came to her pregnancy. You would have thought it was the end of the bloody world the way she carried on” she snapped, shaking her head wildly and giggling “it was like listening to a child sometimes with the way she kept throwing tantrums.”
“But you were best friends, you even blamed Rohan for her death” I protested, staring at her.
Had she gone completely crazy? She laughed softly to herself. “Well of course I had to pretend to be angry at Rohan,” she said nonchalantly as if I was an i***t “Otherwise he might have suspected and I couldn’t have that now, could I?”
“Suspected,” I said blankly, as she picked up a scalpel and examined it, holding it up to the dim light and smiling with satisfaction, the scalpel gleaming, her gloves keeping her from being burned “Suspect you for what?”
For being in love with him? Why go to such extremes to keep it such a secret, unless…
I shivered. It couldn’t be true, could it? But she was looking at me, as though she had anticipated I would connect the dots together and gave a bitter laugh, brandishing the scalpel in the air as I stared at her in horror. I couldn’t fathom how she could have done it, but it all made a sickening sense.
“Renae never killed herself, did she?” I said slowly as Sandra’s smile spread wider “or her parents. It was all you.”
I could feel bile rising in my throat and valiantly fought the urge to vomit. Renae might have been unhinged with the pregnancy but she hadn’t gone as far as to kill herself or her family. That had all been Sandra.
“Correct” she sang. “I couldn’t stand listening to her complaints anymore. She had Rohan’s attention all the time while he did everything he could to please the ungrateful b***h and it was never enough. Her parents were pushing for them to get married and well, I snapped” she said blithely, as though she was discussing the weather “I guess the thought of Rohan marrying another was enough to make me take action.”
“She was your friend,” I said in disgust “and she was pregnant, how could you…” I trailed off as she slowly shook her head. “I was only friends with her to get close to Rohan” she reminded me tersely “not that it worked.”
“Then why did you leave?” I breathed, watching her move closer, her eyes fixating on me “Why not stay and comfort Rohan afterward?”
“Oh, I wanted to,” she said thoughtfully “but he was obsessed with investigating what happened. If I had stayed, he might have put it all together. So I blamed him, threw it all in his face and he became so overwrought he stopped investigating. I figured I would lay low, and then come back, make another try of getting him to fall in love with me eventually. I never really went that far and any girl that tried to get close to him, well when they left his pack, they met an untimely end” she said with a wide grin.
Oh my god. She was beyond insane. She fingered the scalpel, testing its sharpness. I tried to reach my wolf but she was still silent. Had Sandra dosed me again while I was unconscious?
“Don’t do this” I said to her in desperation as she trailed the scalpel along the inside of my leg, my eyes wide. She had replaced my clothes with a hospital gown and I felt the silver touching my bare skin, making it bubble, and felt it burn as I let out a grunt of pain. “Please Sandra, my child is innocent.”
“It is hardly innocent though, when Rohan is the father,” she said cuttingly and I could feel my body trembling, tears coming to my eyes.
I was completely helpless, restrained as I was to the bed and she was taking full advantage. It was a miracle she had managed to get me to this part of the hospital without anybody being the wiser. I could feel myself praying for Rohan. I had been so angry at him for not making the appointment but now, I would have given anything to see his face right now. My thoughts were on our unborn baby, our prince and I swallowed hard, feeling like a failure. I could not protect him. I was at Sandra’s mercy and it was abundantly clear that she was beyond any rational thought. I was doomed.
Josie, I need you to take some deep breaths and calm down. Ignore the pain of the silver touching your flesh, can you do that?
Amber, thank god. I’ve been desperate to hear from you. What are we going to do? She’s going to kill us, just like she killed Renae and her family. Rohan has no idea where we are. We can’t shift, not being pregnant like this. What do we do?
We can shift, without harming the baby because we are a white wolf. We just need to be careful not to let her injure us. Now, before she does any real damage, concentrate and shift, take her by surprise. She thinks you are still under the influence of wolfsbane. That will be her downfall. Shift Josie!
I didn’t hesitate, thoughts of protecting my child flooded my mind. A mother’s desire to protect her baby was strong and I shifted, the restraints breaking and freeing my arms and legs as I turned into my wolf form, a startled Sandra jumping backward. I let out a ferocious growl as she desperately waved the scalpel at me. Why wasn’t she shifting? I was confused. Where was her wolf?
Her wolf will no longer allow her to shift. She has become too unbalanced for her taste and she is remorseful for Sandra’s previous actions for killing Renae. Be careful Josie, this will only cause Sandra to become even more desperate than she already is. Also, if you kill her, you kill her wolf.
I might not have a choice, Amber!
Her wolf knows that and she says she’s willing to die, but she cannot do anything to stop her hurting us in human form.
I felt a pang at that, even as I began to stalk towards Sandra who seemed to be confused.
“You stupid mutt” she screamed out loud, pulling at her clothes, “how dare you do this” she wailed.
So she had just realized what her wolf was up to. I felt no sympathy. She continued to wave the scalpel around, backing away while I continued to advance. She had no place to go and was no match for a wolf in her human form. The door burst open and another wolf came barreling through, crashing into Sandra as she let out a hysterical scream and pinning her to the ground with a ferocious growl, its lips curled back as it snapped its jaws at her in a threatening manner.
