                    Rohan POV
I helped Lauren carry the stuff she needed inside. I was mystified as to what we actually needed. We had already booked the restaurant so that it was closed to the public. Other than making the table pretty, I didn’t see the need to do anything else. I didn’t want to be proposing with the public watching my every move. My cheeks burned at the thought of it. It wasn’t just because she might say no, but because I wanted this to be a small intimate affair, between my mate and me. I placed the box I was carrying onto a nearby empty table and Lauren did the same. She opened them and grabbed a
tablecloth, putting it onto a table that was on the front porch.
“Won’t that just fly off with the wind?” I asked in bewilderment.
She looked at me and laughed, showing me what she held in her palm. They were little weights that attached to the bottom of the tablecloth to keep it in place and prevent just that from happening. I flushed, feeling like an i***t. She patted my arm “it’s okay, men don’t know about these things” she said kindly.
I glowered at her. She giggled and walked away, coming back with a vase and a beautiful array of real flowers that she placed on the table. She frowned “It’s missing something,” she said and disappeared.
I gaped as she put decorative pebbles in the vase, to mix with the water. “To weigh it down” she explained, “don’t want broken glass on the porch.”
She had really thought of everything. She placed several tealight candles on the table, clustered around the flowers, and lit them, before putting down the shade cloth around the porch as extra security against the wind. She left enough to still have a beautiful view of the ocean.
I thought we might be done, but she went back inside the restaurant and came back with a spattering of shells and crystals which she placed in a circle around the tealights and vase. The effect was stunning. Even I admired it. “There,” she said satisfied, putting her hands on her hips and nodding to herself.
“Great work,” I said and she laughed.
“I’m not finished yet,” she said and I eyed her confused.
She went and grabbed the box I had been holding. It was full of tealights. “Start putting them on the edges of the porch” she instructed sweetly.
This felt like overkill. But Lauren had a maniacal look in her eyes and I felt it was prudent to obey her instructions. As I placed tealights around the edges of the porch, she wound garlands of ivy around the porch railings, tucking fake flowers into them. I finished and lit the tealights, before helping her. The result was amazing. Lauren had outdone herself and gone above and beyond what I had imagined when it came to setting the scene.
We had to be finished now surely? Lauren saw the look on my face and laughed. We had been out here for over two hours. She gestured for me to follow her into the restaurant and we both sat down at a table, Lauren pulling out her phone.
“Sit down,” she said gesturing. “I have already discussed the menu with the chef for tonight” she added.
I raised an eyebrow. She was certainly efficient. I could hear the chef in the kitchen, preparing the food.
“For the appetizer, I thought that Strawberry Riccotta Bruschetta would be a perfect beginning to the evening, with a glass of champagne, non-alcoholic of course, given your mate’s condition,” she said tactfully.
That actually sounded nice. I knew Josie liked strawberries so this would be something she would enjoy.
“For the main course, I chose beef wellington with an assortment of root vegetables and homemade gravy.”
My mouth watered. My wolf was purring. Both of us could have kissed Lauren at that moment. There was no way we could have chosen anything this good for a meal. I would have been completely useless. I should have offered to pay her for this. Damn. But my cousin appeared to be enjoying herself. I was eagerly anticipating what dessert she had picked.
“Now as for dessert” she began and I perked up, my wolf doing the same, both of us looking at her eagerly “in keeping with the theme of romance, red velvet cheesecake and homemade strawberry icecream” she concluded.
My stomach growled in response. Lauren giggled “You’re supposed to be excited about the other part of the evening, not the food part” she admonished.
“Can’t I be excited about both?” I countered.
She shook her head laughing softly. I reached out and took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze,, feeling more relaxed now that the work was all done. All that was left to do now was the hardest part of all, but I already knew the words I wanted to say to the mate I loved with all my heart.
I needed to express my gratitude to her. “Lauren, I can’t tell you just how grateful I am that you’ve done all of this for me. This is better than anything I could have imagined, and I’m sure that Josie is going to love all of this.”
“Just tell me everything when she says yes” she whispered, her eyes shining as I grinned.
I leaned in close, kissing her on the cheek as she beamed at me, her eyes sparkling. A voice cut in from the restaurant and we both turned in shock.
“You cheating son of a b***h” the voice roared, sounding furious as well as hurt and my heart stopped still, my wolf speechless for once in his life.
I didn’t understand what she was doing here. I got to my feet, seeing tears in Josie’s eyes. How had she known where to find me? Lauren was getting to her feet, looking awkward. I glanced at her and then realization dawned as I figured out what Josie must have seen and interpreted it to be.
