Josie POV
I held onto Rohan’s hand tightly, the ring shining in the light, my eyes sparkling with happiness. We’d been working on our communication better lately and now we were closer than ever, after that unfortunate incident that had seen me acting like a jealous psycho towards him. I flushed at the memory. I felt Rohan squeeze my hand, reassuring me as we headed towards the hospital. “Are you nervous?” he asked, narrowing his eyes and looking concerned.
“A little” I admitted “I mean, what could they possibly be wanting to check that they couldn’t find out from blood results?” He frowned “I’m not sure” he admitted “but as Luna, you’ll get the best care available and I’ll be right by your side” he added, bringing my hand to his lips and kissing it as I smiled at him softly.
“Thank you” I whispered, grateful to have this man by my side, the strength that helped to keep me upright when I would fall without him. I blinked back tears and as the large building came into view, I swallowed past the lump in my throat, feeling my chest tighten.
Amber, do you know why they might want to have another ultrasound right now?
hmmm, she hummed, sounding suspiciously cheerful I might have an inkling but I can’t tell you. I think it’s best that the doctor does. I will say this though, it has to do with why we cannot shift now. Before, we could but now it is far too dangerous.
Why can’t you just give me a hint? What are you hiding? I was a little incensed. I mean, she knew how distressed and worried I was. She could have at least helped to alleviate those.
Try not to stress so much Josie. I can assure you there is nothing majorly wrong. But that’s all I am going to tell you. Thanks a lot, I told her grumpily, stepping inside the main part of the hospital with Rohan.
The doctor came over immediately upon spotting us and I heaved a sigh of relief that we wouldn’t have to wait. “Luna Josie” she gushed, bowing her head, before turning to Rohan and submitting her neck “Alpha Rohan.”
“It’s just Josie,” I told her sincerely.
“Same, I’m just Rohan,” my mate said smoothly.
The doctor nodded with a wide smile. “Well I know that you must be anxious about the ultrasound,” she said with a large amount of cheerfulness “so if you follow me, we’ll take you straight to a private room and get started.”
I felt like I was having trouble breathing. Now that we were here, I felt slightly panicked. The thought of bad news made my stomach churn and I felt the urge to vomit become almost overwhelming. I saw Rohan shoot me a sidelong glance, while the doctor remained oblivious, leading us down a long corridor and into a large private room, closing the door firmly behind her. She motioned towards the bed with a small nod. “If you’ll just lie down on the bed and pull your top up and pull your pants down below your stomach” she advised.
I knew the drill. I got up on the bed with Rohan’s assistance and lay down, Rohan helping to shimmy my pants down, while I pulled my shirt up with shaking hands. This was it, the moment of truth. Whatever was going on, I was going to find out. I could feel my body trembling as the doctor finished preparing herself and began to drag the machine over, plugging it into the PowerPoint and squirting gel onto the probe.
“This will be cold” she warned with a laugh “but you already know that.”
I nodded tightly, my eyes already going towards the screen. I was anxious to see our unborn baby. I wanted to make certain that he was okay. Rohan grabbed my hand and squeezed it tight.
“Alright,” the doctor murmured, beginning to press onto my stomach as I watched with anxious eyes “Let’s have a look and see what we’re working with.”
I could feel tears pricking the corners of my eyes as I prayed that my baby was alright. The doctor noted my distress. “Please relax Luna,” she said quietly “We are simply checking for something we may have missed. I assure you that whatever the situation is, that your baby is fine.”
Rohan’s face was grim and his jaw was clenched. The suspense was killing both of us. All we could do was cling to each other’s hand and squeeze, the tension in the air thick and gloomy. The doctor was biting her lip as she continued to move the probe around, and my eyes widened as we looked at the screen. I blinked, thinking I had seen something that was unexpected but then looked again and it was gone. It had to have been my imagination going into overdrive. There was no way it was possible. I tried to relax, my body still trembling as the doctor suddenly gave a sigh and then glanced at Rohan and me ruefully.
“So, it appears that when the initial ultrasound was done, there was in fact something that was missed, which can be the case sometimes. It’s not uncommon and I do apologize that it happened. All I can do is extend my apology and hope that you understand how bad I feel.”
We waited, anticipation and dread flooding us both.
“What I’m about to tell you may be good news or bad news depending on how you look at it,” she said very calmly “I believe that you will consider it good news and I hope that you’ll also take it that way. Luna Josie” she addressed me as I whitened “congratulations,” she said excitedly as I stared at her dumbstruck, blinking in confusion “it appears that you are in fact having twins. Identical ones from the looks of it.”
Twins? But how on earth was that possible? How was that missed on the initial ultrasound? It didn’t make sense.
