Sarah POV
Grant really is a moron. I think to myself, as I leave his bedroom, a fierce look of concentration on my face. Part of me wants to laugh at the irony. How could this happen? It must be a joke. The moon goddess is having a laugh at my expense. It’s infuriating. To think that fat slut might be Grant’s mate. Disgusting. I shudder. It’s the only reasonable explanation as to why his wolf is acting so damn psycho when it comes to Jordan. Urgh. The fact that Grant hasn’t come to that conclusion yet, is hilarious. I guess his wolf has decided to keep him in the dark, because of the way he treats her. Never mind, I guess I’m going to use that to my advantage.
There is no way in hell I am going to let my b***h of a little sister have my boyfriend. She doesn’t deserve to be mates with the Alpha of the pack. I deserve to be Luna, not her. She can’t even fight. She would just make our pack a laughingstock amongst the other packs, especially with the way she looks. I don’t even know what Alpha Jaxon sees in her. I don’t get how she has two alpha’s fighting over her. I mean, is he blind? I flip my hair over my shoulder, thinking hard. I have to nip this in the bud before Grant does something really stupid and accepts her. When Jordan turns eighteen, he’ll be able to sense the mate bond properly, and so will she. That’s in a few days’ time. I have to keep them separated until then. But how? I would have to make her so sick that she can’t go anywhere. Or weak. But if she doesn’t go to the ball, then Jaxon might get suspicious. He already doesn’t like me. s**t. What do I do?
I make it back to the house, pondering my options, at a complete loss. I open the front door and slam it shut angrily. My father is in the kitchen. “Whoa” he exclaims, holding his hands up and eyeing me curiously “What’s the matter? Something happen pumpkin?” he coos.
I shrug grumpily and plop myself down on the chair. I look around the room and narrow my eyes. Where the hell was Jordan? “Where’s the fat ass?” I ask snarkily.
“Jordan’s at Alpha Jaxon’s pack remember?” my father reminded me a little testily. He was still angry about feeling forced to concede in front of Alpha John and Luna Mary in letting her go.
“Oh yeah,” I exhaled “Lucky her” I mutter.
“Where have you been anyway?” he asks raising an eyebrow and pointedly looking at the time “It’s late afternoon and school finished ages ago.”
I flushed. “I was studying with Chelsea” I lied, fidgeting in my seat and then straightened up “Maybe you can help me” I devised, suddenly thinking of something “We’re supposed to be doing an assignment on substances that can weaken a werewolf or affect it in different ways.”
“Interesting” my father murmured “Are you supposed to focus on one substance or multiple substances?”
“Multiple,” I said hurriedly “are there various substances that can do different things to a werewolf?”
He looked thoughtful. “Well, you already know about wolfsbane and how it weakens a shifter and prevents them from shifting. That herb grows wild in the forest and can be perfectly harmless unless it is ingested.”
I grabbed a notebook out of my schoolbag and scribbled it down while my father rubbed his chin thinking.
“You also know that silver burns and injures shifters” my father pointed out as I nodded. I’d known that since I was very little.
I frowned. I needed something that would knock someone out or cause them to be sedated. I glanced at my father slyly.” What about sedating a shifter? I’m assuming it takes a lot to get them sedated” I said excitedly.
He c****d his head at me “What class is this for again?”
“Social studies,” I said quickly.
“Hmmm must be a new curriculum. Well, certain opioids can be used, some are more effective than others. Fentanyl, for instance, is a prime example for one, it’s been known to have quite the sedative effect but can wear off quite quickly if a high dosage isn’t given. A human would die but the shifter side of us heals so it’s only a temporary solution.”
I scribbled it down, wondering where in the hell I would get fentanyl from. Something told me I would find it in the hospital if I went looking.
“There is something else” he began and then shook his head, looking sheepish as I looked at him eagerly “Never mind, it’s not something I should be telling you anyway. It’s definitely not something you need to know,” he said grimly and went to get up from the table.
My hand automatically shot out and gripped his arm, my eyes pleading with him. “Daddy” I whined “you can’t just leave me hanging like that. What were you going to say? Come on, you know you can tell me anything” I coaxed.
He still hesitated, his eyes darkening. Whatever he’d been about to tell me had to be something juicy. I decided to push a little harder. “I really need to get an A on this project” I breathed, fluttering my eyelashes at him “and if you can tell me something unique and interesting, it might just be enough to get me there.”
He sighed. “Well I don’t really see the harm” he muttered, “it’s not like you couldn’t find this information if you didn’t look it up in our library.”
I nodded, still batting my eyes at him. Like hell I’d go to the library if I didn’t have to but he didn’t need to know that. He rubbed his chin. “There’s a certain herb called Catuaba,” he said as I slowly and very carefully wrote it down in front of him. “It is a very potent aphrodisiac for shifters or werewolves as you like to call us” he grunted rolling his eyes in my direction as I giggled “It causes the person who ingests it to become highly sexually aroused to the point that it becomes painful and only s*x can make the pain go away. The higher the dose, the more s*x they need to make it go away. Not only that but they lose control of their senses and can almost be persuaded to do just about anything. Shifters have been known to cheat on their mates when given this stuff because their wolf has been overtaken with lust and the strong desire to mate with whoever is near. That’s why it’s strictly forbidden here.”
I was disappointed. If it was forbidden, how was I going to get my hands on it? I pretended to gasp in dismay “Who would be so cruel as to give somebody this herb if it’s so powerful” I said dramatically “I mean if it’s forbidden how would they have gotten their hands on it?
My father grimaced. “Just because it’s forbidden doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get your hands on it” he warned “Thanks to the internet, it’s possible to get your hands on anything these days. We’re careful to clear any we see in the forest but we can’t stop people from making online purchases. You have to remember this herb doesn’t affect humans the same way. Just us shifters. It’s so potent, it’s scary what it brings out in us and it can make our wolf side even more aggressive than usual.”
I tried not to smirk to myself. My dad was so trusting. He’d literally given me the solution on a silver platter. He didn’t think me capable of using him for information. He got up from the table and wiped the sweat off his brow, heading to the oven and turning it on to preheat.
“Have I given you enough examples?” he asked.
“Huh, what?” I asked half listening as I contemplated my options.
“Have I given you enough examples for your school project?” he asked me again patiently.
“Oh yeah, this should be plenty, thanks, Dad. I can look up more information on what you’ve given me. This is going to be very helpful” I said wickedly.
He gave a nonchalant shrug “Glad I could help” he muttered, digging around in the freezer and grabbing some chips and chicken tenders as I tried not to wrinkle my nose “Dinner should be ready in about thirty minutes or so” he murmured as I tried not to complain.
I would just eat a tiny portion I decided. I was hardly going to complain after what he’d done for me.
“I’m going to go and do some research. Can I borrow your laptop?” I asked eagerly.
He eyed me with a wary expression on his face. “Are you going to put it back when you are finished?” he asked bluntly ” and in the same condition it was in before?”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah Dad, although if you got me my own laptop, this wouldn’t be a problem” I pointed out cheerfully. “Yeah, yeah, I know. I’ll think about it. I know you need one for schoolwork” he said exasperatedly “Maybe we can go and get one tomorrow seeing as Jordan’s gone for the weekend. I’ll even let you pick out what color you want. You’re such a good girl doing you’re homework on a Friday night” he complimented me as I gaped at him.
“You mean it” I shrieked “You’re really going to get me my own laptop!”
I flung my arms around him, beaming, a wide grin on my face. Could this day get any better? He laughed and waved me away. “Go on, you don’t have much time,” he said, “before dinner is ready.”
I practically skipped to his office and grabbed his laptop, hustling upstairs with it. The last thing I needed was for him to come in unannounced so I made double sure to close and lock my bedroom door, before beginning to peruse the web for the herb he had mentioned, Catuaba, which to my surprise was available in both herb form and tablets. God this was too easy. The difficult part was going to be getting the fentanyl. If I needed it. I chuckled to myself and grabbed my credit card. Wasn’t I lucky that I had my own bank card to make my purchases with? My father would never even know what I had ordered. I deleted my browser history just in time as there was a tentative knock on the door.
“Honey, dinner is ready” my father yelled, “come and eat while it’s hot.”
“Alright, I’m coming right out” I shouted, hastily shutting the laptop down and scrambling to my feet.
I unlocked my bedroom door and rushed downstairs, putting the laptop carefully back in its place, and then skipped into the kitchen, where my father was setting out two place settings.
“Bon Appetit” he cried and I giggled as I sat down next to him, grabbing a fork and cutting into one of the tenders.
“So how did you go?” he asked as I chewed and swallowed.
“I got a lot more accomplished than I thought in such a short amount of time,” I said thoughtfully.
He nodded. “That’s great. When is the project due?” he asked interested.
“Um, next Friday so I have a whole week,” I said distantly, gulping down some water.
“Are you all ready for the ball? Do you have a date?” my father asked, devouring his own food, his eyes staring fixedly into mine.
I gulped. I hadn’t told him I was going with Grant yet, not sure how he would take it. He knew Grant and I were friends but not that we’d developed a further interest in each other.
“I still need to buy a dress,” I said with a gasp of shock “and Grant asked me to go with him” I admitted sheepishly.
My father scowled. “Honey, are you sure you want to do that? I mean the ball is supposed to be for Grant finding his mate. I know you two are friends and all, but I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I won’t be Dad. Trust me. Everything is going to be fine” I assured him, as he looked at me unconvinced, sighing heavily.” But I do need to get a dress and shoes, and a bag, and hair things” I began to list using my fingers.
“We can do all that this weekend” he groaned and then groaned even louder.
“What, what is it?” I asked anxiously.
Had he forgotten that he needed to do something important? He shook his head and thumped his hand on the table. “I suppose I’m going to have to get your damn sister a dress and that seeing as she’s attending the ball. I can hardly have her going looking like a servant or maid” he growled “especially as she’s attending with that arrogant, cocky, little Alpha boy who invited her. Not to mention Alpha John and Luna Mary are attending and they’ll have questions if she’s not dressed appropriately.”
Ah. Now I got his anger and frustration. I was annoyed too. Why should Jordan get to dress up and act like a spoiled brat for one night? If it wasn’t for Jaxon she wouldn’t even be allowed to go.
“Maybe we could just rent her a dress” I suggested, my eyes lighting up “That would save you money and it means she doesn’t get to keep it.”
“That sounds like a good idea” my father admitted “but I doubt that many places have her size for rental. I’ll have to buy her one,” he said with a growl “damnit. I’ll give it away afterward.”
“When are you going to take her?” I demanded, feeling a bit jealous.
“It will have to be after she turns eighteen. That’s on Tuesday and the ball is on the Saturday after.”
“What’s to stop her from leaving once she has her wolf?” I asked biting my lip worriedly “It’s going to be harder to control her if she’s stronger.”
My father gave me a slow wink. “Don’t worry about that baby girl” he drawled “I have a plan. She’s going to be just as weak and pathetic as she’s always been. I’ll be damned if she ever leaves this pack or this house. She has to pay for killing your mother, and I have every intention of making sure she does just that.”
