Jordan POV
I stretch, feeling Jaxon’s warm body beside me. I had fallen asleep watching the movie on his bed last night and he’d just pulled the cover’s over me and then snuggled against me. I wasn’t complaining. It’s not as though he was going to try anything. It felt comfortable, that was all. I yawn and then jump as Jaxon’s door suddenly bursts wide open, almost giving me a heart attack.
“Rise and shine” his mother yells, causing Jaxon to leap out of bed, get tangled in the sheets, and promptly fall to the floor with a curse “We have a lot to do today” she shrills.
“Mother, it’s not even seven am” Jaxon complains with a huff, finally detangling himself from the sheets “It’s far too early to be up on a weekend.”
She smirks. “How cute, you guys slept together,” she said her eyes wide as I blushed “Did you cuddle too?”
“Mother” Jaxon growled as she laughed and clapped her hands.
“Come on, get ready,” she said with a cheerfulness that I envied, not being much of a morning person myself “We have to go get Jordan’s dress today” she enthused.
“Wait, what. I thought I was staying here?” Jaxon asked confused. “Why would I need to go?”
His mother rolled her eyes. “Who else is going to carry the bags?” she said impatiently.
“Literally anyone else. You could take Dad or an omega” Jaxon pointed out, a hint of desperation in his voice.
“No, besides, I might get you a new shirt. I’m not particularly fond of the one I told you to wear. Now hurry up. Breakfast is in ten minutes” she added, sailing out the door, perfectly made up and dressed.
I giggled at the look of frustration on Jaxon’s face as we entered the kitchen and began to eat in a hurry. “Told you” he mumbled between frantic bites of food “today is going to be horrible.”
His mother came waltzing in, pointing at her watch pointedly, as Jaxon groaned out loud. “Okay, okay, we’re coming” he grumped as we stood up and followed her out to the car “How come dad doesn’t have to come?”
“He’s busy with pack business and he doesn’t have a ball to attend,” Luna Serena said calmly, ushering me into the passenger side of the car, while Jaxon reluctantly got into the back “So I suggest you deal with it young man. Temper tantrums are cute on three-year-olds but are a complete turn off on a teenager,” she said briskly.
His mouth flopped open and shut a few times as she started the engine and drove off, completely stunned into speechlessness. I fought back my laughter. Luna Serena began to hum to the stereo, completely in her element.
We reached the mall, a huge building in the next town over and she parked relatively close by. I had noticed two cars following us and presumed they were warriors, for the Luna and Alpha’s son’s protection. They were very discreet as they followed behind us. I grabbed Jaxon’s hand and he gave it a squeeze as we headed into the massive building, feeling overwhelmed by the bright lights and the never-ending stores that seemed to continue forever.
“Okay, first we do hair” announced Luna Serena, eyeing me critically “I actually love yours but it could use a few highlights and a bit of a trim, not much, and Jaxon,” she said shaking her head “yours is getting scruffy. You’re starting to resemble that dog in Lady and the Tramp from Disney” she added clicking her fingers and getting us to follow her.
“I don’t look like a dog” snarled Jaxon and then turned to me, an inquisitive look on his face “Do I?”
I shook my head, highly amused. “But it would still look nice after a trim,” I said diplomatically as he scowled at me.
We reached the hairdressers and Luna Serena was obviously well known there because, within moments, Jaxon and I were sitting in chairs having our hair done. His took only minutes, whereas mine took two hours by the time the highlights, trim, and style were done, not to mention the blow-drying and straightening. I was in awe by the time it was finished. My hair looked several shades lighter and my face looked less round as a result. I looked slimmer and just prettier. My eyes popped without makeup.
“Gorgeous” Luna Serena said pleased as she paid the receptionist “Now it’s time to find your dress” she added to me as Jaxon groaned.
“Also a shirt for you” she chided him which just made him groan more. She sighed “Stop being so dramatic. I know you secretly love to shop. Why else would you dress so well and be so well groomed?”
“Because you buy all my clothes” Jaxon deadpanned.
She scowled at him. I laughed. She steered us into a nearby boutique and I flinched, expecting from the looks of it, to be small sizes only, because it was that upscale. To my surprise, each dress was available in a range of sizes, including plus size. I couldn’t contain my excitement. Luna Serena beamed at me, excitement in her own eyes. Jaxon grimaced. He looked as though he’d rather be anywhere but here. Poor thing probably wanted to play video games or be watching movies.
“Go look at the shirts” Serena hissed, waving her arm toward the men’s dress shirts in the back.
Jaxon headed over to them, a disgruntled look on his face. She eagerly dragged me over to the ball dresses, exclaiming over each one and handing me several that she thought would look good on me.
Soon I had a massive pile in both arms. Serena laughed. “I think that’s plenty to start with,” she said giggling. “Let’s go find the changerooms.”
The changerooms were located in the back of the store and to my shock, were large, with an armchair, several mirrors, shelves to put various items, and hangers to put the clothes. They weren’t like small cubicles like the majority of shops seemed to have. Not that I was permitted to go to the shops but I knew from hearing about them and Sarah talking about them what they were like.
“Do you need help?” asked Serena.
I shook my head. She sat down on the armchair outside the dressing room and gave me an encouraging smile. “I want to see the ones you like the best,” she said gleefully and I nodded and headed into the dressing room.
I tried on a rose pink ball gown which had a low back on it and dipped across my breasts. It was very daring and not like me at all and I was unsure. I hesitated and then went and showed Serena who shook her head decisively “No, it’s not you at all” she said firmly.
I went and took it off. I tried an emerald, green one and she shook her head. A light blue one followed, also rejected by Serena. I was starting to lose hope. There was a ghastly yellow one that made me look pale and washed out. Finally, I tried on the one that I had secretly liked the best. It was a royal blue color and strapless. It had a sweetheart neckline and gathered tightly around the bust and then flowed down to my ankles. It was simple but the colour really suited my complexion. There was a zip going up the back. I took a deep breath and then went and showed Serena.
“That’s it. That’s the one. It brings out your complexion and your hair color really stands out” she declared as I beamed at her “We’re getting that one. You can get back into your other clothes now” she grinned.
I hastened to change, grabbing the dress and hanging it back up carefully. I left the dressing room and a salesperson hastened to take the dresses I didn’t want off me. Serena handed them the dress I did want. “Hold onto that one will you please,” she said sweetly “along with my son’s shirt.”
The saleswoman nodded and hurried off. She clapped her hands. I looked around for Jaxon and spotted him amongst the shoes, eyeing off some cool-looking sneakers.
“Shoes, purse, accessories, and maybe a bolero?” suggested Serena.
I opened my mouth to protest and she dragged me right over to the shoe section before I could so much as utter a word.
“I’m starving” whined Jaxon an hour later, as we stood outside, his arms loaded with shopping bags. He scowled at his mother fiercely.
She sighed and gestured to one of the security team, handing them the bags. “Please put these in the car,” she said, “we’re going to the food court.”
We instantly brightened. Jaxon dragged me toward it, Serena walking slowly behind us, grabbing a table, and plonking down at it with a huge groan. “Thank god” he moaned “I can’t take any more shopping.”
I raised an eyebrow “Didn’t your mother buy you those really cool sneakers you wanted?” I asked suspiciously.
“Only cause she felt guilty dragging me along” he pouted as I shook my head at him “She wouldn’t let me have the shirt I wanted either.”
I stared at him as he wriggled on his chair “That wouldn’t have something to do with the fact you literally tried to choose a shirt that had dinosaurs on it would it?”
“Precisely” drawled Serena sitting down and looking at her son with a stern gaze “One does not go to a ball wearing a suit and a dinosaur shirt” she scoffed.
“It glowed in the dark” Jaxon mumbled, “it would have looked hell cool in the dark.”
I burst into laughter as I pictured it in my mind. Even his mother had to fight a smile.
Serena handed him her credit card. “Go and get food for all of us,” she said waving her hand at the food court “I want a couple of donuts and a caramel thick shake” she requested.
Jaxon went to say something, and I subtly shook my head. Pregnancy cravings were something he shouldn’t be commenting on. He glanced at me. “Jordan, what do you want?”
“Whatever you’re having. That way you don’t have to go to too many places” I said idly. I was easygoing. Food was food.
“Brilliant. See how you make my life easier” he commented, ducking his head to avoid the napkin his mother threw at him and laughing as he walked away.
Silence. Serena let out a yawn, sounding tired. She drummed her fingers on the table and looked at her phone. I was hesitant to disturb her. Luckily Jaxon came back with a tray stuffed full of food. He handed his mother a bag full of various iced donuts and watched her eyes light up like a child on Christmas morning, handing her the thick shake she’d requested. He handed me a burger with large fries and coke.
“Thanks,” I said gratefully, unwrapping my burger and beginning to bite into it. God, it was good. Especially after several hours of shopping.
Jaxon tore into his, devouring his burger in seconds and munching on a second one. I took a sip of my Coke, letting it wash down my throat. Serena nibbled on her donuts, a look of bliss on her face.
Suddenly a voice permeated the air. “Excuse me?” a girl asked, her voice cutting into the silence as we ate. We looked at her confused. I didn’t recognize her, so she didn’t come to our school. She was about our age though, and I could tell she was a shifter. Maybe she was in one of the surrounding packs. She was stunning though, with long blonde wavy hair, big blue eyes, a creamy golden complexion, a dainty figure with pert little breasts, and wearing a very revealing skin-tight short dress.
“Is there something we can help you with?” asked Serena as two other girls came up beside the girl who’d spoken to us. “I was actually speaking to him,” the girl said, pointing at Jaxon who almost choked on his food. I quickly patted him on the back as he coughed and gave him some coke to down. Serena looked incensed.
“Me? What can I do to help you?” Jaxon asked gruffly, eying the rest of his food longingly. It was blatantly clear he didn’t want to be interrupted while eating.
The girl cleared her throat “My name is Katie and I was actually wondering um” she blushed and bit her lip “if you would like to go and get coffee sometime.”
His mother snorted. Jaxon glowered at her. “Thank you for the invitation,” he said kindly “but I’m afraid I must decline.” “Why? You can’t possibly be dating that thing” Katie said snidely, pointing at me rudely.
I stiffened. I should be used to the insults by now. Serena was about to get to her feet but Jaxon shook his head at her. He put an arm around me and pulled me in close. Oh great, now what was he about to do? “As a matter of fact, I am” he purred.
I opened my mouth and he mashed his lips against mine, kissing me hard and then pulling back as Katie and her friend’s mouth opened in shock. He turned and stared at them, a glittering look in his eyes. “For the record, Jordan is gorgeous while you are ugly. I would never date somebody who acts like you, in fact, I find you repulsive. Go find someone willing to overlook your flaws, that is if you can find someone that’s as shallow as you are.”
She squealed and stamped her foot, before rushing off red-faced. Jaxon winked at me. I blushed at him. Serena chuckled. “Well done son,” she said approvingly “but you know, Jordan might not have appreciated you kissing her to make a point,” she said wisely.
“s**t, sorry Jordan” he apologized as I blinked at him “You know I love you as a friend right?”
I laughed, so hard that tears came to my eyes. “Oh god, it’s okay Jaxon. I know you’re gay. I’m not about to fall in love with you over a kiss. But it would be nice if you would stop using me as a way to avoid telling girls that you are.”
“She insulted you” he protested “I was defending your honor.”
“I swear, men think they need to be some sort of prince charming when it comes to damsels in distress” Serena groaned ” Did it ever occur to you to let Jordan come to her own defence?”
He looked so bewildered that I just laughed harder and pushed his food in front of him. “Just eat Jaxon,” I said laughing and then glanced at Serena “and then we can go back to yours. At least I think we’re done?”
He looked at his mother with a woebegone expression. “We’re done” she breathed as Jaxon and I began to eat again “but only because I know Jordan’s getting tired and I don’t want to overdo it for her.”
“What about me?” asked Jaxon indignantly.
Serena eyed him cooly “She’s a guest so naturally I care about her more. You’re my son and a soon-to-be Alpha. If you can’t handle a few hours of shopping, then I fear for the safety of the pack. Rogues aren’t going to stop after a few hours because you’re bored or tired” she said sarcastically.
“That’s different” mumbled Jaxon “I’m not exactly having to fight for my life while shopping, am I?”
He shut up when he saw the look she was giving him.
