                    Jaxon POV
The ball was incredible, the crowds surrounding us, the decorations majestic and luxurious. As I danced with Jordan, who looked stunning by the way, I smelt the scent of sandalwood and pine, an intoxicating scent that wafted toward me and made me inhale sharply. God, it was so delicious, my mouth watered, and I instinctively turned, looking for the source of the smell. Another boy, or rather a man, who looked to be slightly older than me, locked eyes with me from across the room. He was beautiful, with the most golden blonde hair I’d ever seen that drifted down to his shoulders, bright sparkling blue eyes, golden suntanned skin, and broad shoulders, his muscles obvious through his tuxedo. My mouth opened of its own accord and before I could stop myself, I growled out one word, that shocked me for a moment, “Mate” as Jordan gave a low squeal of excitement next to me.
My mate’s eyes widened and then to my horror, they slid towards Jordan and a disgruntled expression came over his face. He shook his head and then turned, storming towards the exit as I put a hand to my mouth.
“What are you waiting for? Go and get him” Jordan hissed, bringing my attention back to her “he probably has the wrong idea about me and you” she snapped.
Oh god. He must have thought that Jordan and I were together, I realized and sprang into action, hurrying across the ballroom, maneuvering through the throngs of people, and heading through the doors, my head swiveling back and forth in desperation.
My mate was patiently waiting, his back to the wall, his arms folded across his chest, a grim expression on his face. “Get it over with,” he said gruffly, and I frowned at him, confused.
“Get what over with?” I asked, moving closer, my eyes fixed hungrily on his face. I wanted to reach out and touch him, my wolf Aries going slowly berserk in my mind.
“The rejection” my mate hissed, “I saw you with your girlfriend. There’s no way you want to be with a male shifter as your mate. So just do me a favor and reject me” he snarled.
I laughed out loud. I couldn’t help it. The situation was just too funny. My mate’s eyes narrowed, and he eyed me suspiciously. “Why are you laughing?” he grunted, confused.
My hand shot out and I placed it on the wall next to him, c*****g my head and fixing my eyes on his as I regarded him steadily, my heart thumping wildly in my chest. “I’m laughing because the very idea of me having a girlfriend is inconceivable” I breathed as he clenched his hands into fists “I happen to be gay, in case you were wondering.”
“But the girl you were with” he spluttered “you were dancing and you seemed to be very cozy together.”
“Jordan is my best friend,” I told him quietly “and we’re close, it’s true, but not in a romantic sense. I happen to be very interested in males” I added as he relaxed slightly.
Now he looked sheepish. It was adorable. His eyes slid away, a guilty expression on his face. “I um, guess I might have jumped to the wrong assumption,” he said gruffly “I apologize.”
“Well it’s nice to know you were jealous,” I said with a shrug and then cupped his cheek, bringing his eyes back to me as he sucked in a breath “But I can think of another way you could make it up to me” I growled.
He looked nervous. I wrapped my hand around the back of his neck and drew him closer to me. I pressed my lips against his and felt tingles run down my spine. He groaned, enthusiastically kissing me back, both of our tongues caressing each other as sparks of electricity ran through me. I couldn’t get enough of him. I could feel my c**k twitching and an insatiable desire to drag him upstairs to an empty room to ravish him go through my mind. Judging by the hard-on he had, my mate was having the same sort of reaction I was. I tried not to smirk.
We pulled away, panting. He ran a hand through his sandy hair, his blue eyes twinkling.
“My name is Alex and I’m training to be the Beta of the Dark Moon Pack,” he said quietly.
I gave him a wide grin “I’m Alpha Jaxon of the Full Moon Pack” I purred “Or at least I’m soon to be Alpha, my parents have been waiting for me to find my mate” I coughed “And it looks like I’ve just found mine.”
“So you’re not planning on rejecting me?” he asked uncertainly.
“Why would I want to do that? Do you plan on rejecting me?” I asked.
“Are you kidding me? You’re gorgeous” he burst out and then blushed bright flaming red as I fought the urge not to laugh.
“Then I guess everything is going to work out perfectly. That is provided you are willing to move packs?” I asked him. “Consider it done,” he said gruffly, grabbing me by the chin and planting another kiss on me, which left me breathless and a little lightheaded “But um, I think your friend is looking for you” he added with a wink, pointing down the hallway, where Jordan’s head was poking out of the ballroom doors, a concerned expression on her face.
“Jordan, down here” I called, and her eyes lit up as she walked tentatively out of the ballroom, her heels clacking on the floor as she came over to my side, a gentle smile on her face as she looked Alex up and down with approval.
“This is my mate Alex, from the Dark Moon Pack” I introduced her “Alex, this is my best friend Jordan from the Blood Moon Pack.
Alex held out his hand and Jordan shyly shook it. “It’s so nice to meet you” Jordan breathed “I’m so happy for you both” she added.
“Alex thought we were together,” I told her wryly as Alex blushed again.
“Oh no” Jordan gasped “I thought that might be it. But I promise you, we’re only friends,” she said desperately trying to reassure Alex, who looked like he wished the floor would swallow him up.
I could hear the music playing in the distance. Jordan sighed deeply. “Is there anything I can do to convince you?” she asked.
“I um, know that you’re just friends” Alex blurted out “I shouldn’t have made the wrong assumption and I’m sorry.” Jordan smiled at him. “Don’t worry about it. I hope we can be close friends, like I am with Jaxon” she said wistfully.
I was hoping for the same. Alex looked a little taken aback. He clearly wasn’t expecting Jordan to accept him so readily, but that was the kind of person she was. “I would like that,” he said roughly.
“Would you like to dance?” I asked my mate.
Alex hesitated. “I um, actually don’t know how to,” he said in a low voice.
I sensed that he was worried about making a fool of himself in a crowd of people. “No problem, how about we sit down at a table then” I suggested “get to know each other a bit more? Do you mind if Jordan joins us?”
Alex looked relieved at that suggestion. “No problem” he agreed and then shocked me by offering his arm to Jordan and tucking it in, before grabbing my hand and holding it. Geez he had a firm grip, something I as an Alpha appreciated. We took off into the ballroom and scored an empty table, which ironically had three empty seats.
Jordan let out a sigh as she sat. “Ah,” she said, folding her legs over “that’s so much better.”
She rubbed her feet.
“Why did you wear heels if they were going to hurt you?” I asked her mystified as Alex looked between us amused.
“They looked pretty” Jordan supplied waving her hands in the air “And they make my legs look longer and slimmer” she added.
I glanced down at her legs. Huh. Now that she mentioned it, they did have that effect. Alex snorted as he saw me looking. “Seriously, dude, if you hadn’t told me you were gay, I would be super jealous right now” he chuckled.
Just then Grant came up to the table and Jordan stiffened. He smiled at all of us pleasantly. “Jordan,” he said quietly” you’re looking especially beautiful tonight” he complimented her.
“Thank you, but shouldn’t you be with your date?” she quipped back in a dangerous tone “You know Sarah?”
He looked wounded. Alex was listening intently. “Jordan, please, can’t we just talk? I’ve tried to apologize” he added.
A waitress came up with glasses of champagne. She handed each of us a glass. Jordan began to gulp hers down while the rest of us took cautious sips. She was fuming. “An apology doesn’t make up for the years of bullying and abuse you put me through, not to mention the fact you’ve been sleeping with my sister” she hissed. “I’ve already told you that I do not want to be mates with you. If you don’t accept the rejection then that’s on you, but I’m not going to change my mind” she added sounding miserable.
“But Jordan” Grant tried again.
She shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. “No Grant. We were close friends once and I loved you. I had the biggest crush on you. If you had just shown me even the slightest bit of kindness and compassion over the years and stopped the harassment I would have accepted you wholeheartedly. But I want a mate who loves me for who I am, not one who is forever going to compare me to my stick-thin, model-looking sister.”
“I wouldn’t” Grant tried to protest, but it fell on deaf ears.
“Just leave” Jordan choked out, tears trailing down her cheeks as I reached over and grasped her hand, Alex holding the other one “I hope you’ll be very happy with Sarah. You two deserve each other” she snapped.
He sighed and walked away. I saw a waitress go up to him and offer him the last glass of champagne she had, Grant gulping it down, much as Jordan had.
Jordan finished her glass of champagne, and the waitress reappeared with more. She handed another one to Jordan who finished off a second one. “Whoa,” I said gently “take it easy.”
She looked at me unblinking “I don’t want to” she hiccupped and then downed the second glass.
I winced. As far as I knew she’d never had alcohol and this champagne was particularly potent, aimed at getting shifters drunk. Sure enough, she was tipsy before too long and swaying in her chair. “I’m going to go and see Luna Mary, see if I can go lie down in a room” she muttered, getting up unsteadily.
“Want me to go with you?” I offered.
She shook her head. “Stay with Alex. I’m sure Luna Mary will escort me to the room” she said unsteadily “You spend time with your mate. It was nice meeting you Alex” she said again, turning around and heading directly to Luna Mary as I watched.
“We can go help her if you like” Alex offered, seeing me watching Jordan closely.
“No it’s okay,” I said reluctantly as I saw the Luna walking Jordan to the doors “The Luna is taking care of her. I’ll check in on her later” I added “unless she chooses to spend the night here. Now let’s get to know each other” I said, fixing my eyes on him and watching him swallow nervously “Why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself” I invited him, leaning back in my chair and folding my arms across my chest as I waited.
