Jaxon POV
The banging on the front of the pack house was loud and frantic. Whoever was on the other side was desperate for it to be answered. “Jaxon, get that will you” my mother groaned, waving her hand at me. She was entirely too comfortable seated in the living room, watching an old movie with my father.
I moved, yanking the door open, Jordan flinging her arms around me. “Jordan,” I said shocked to see her and in such a state as she sobbed on my shoulder, my arms automatically embracing her tight “What’s wrong?” I asked, knowing instinctively it was something dreadful.
Why hadn’t I checked up on her like I had said I would?
My mouth gaped open as she said the words I never would have anticipated in a million years “Jaxon I need to seek sanctuary.”
Sanctuary was only ever sought under the direst of circumstances. I ushered her in and shut the door. I led her into the living room. My mother’s eyes lit up as she saw Jordan and she instantly rushed to hug her, noting Jordan’s red and puffy eyes, the dark circles beneath them, and the paleness of her face. She didn’t look well at all. In fact, she looked sickly.
“Sit down Jordan, tell me what’s going on. Why do you need sanctuary?” I asked as my mother gasped and helped her to be seated. My father, already seated, raised an eyebrow and Alex looked concerned. They knew the magnitude of what she had asked for but were reserving judgment. Good.
Jordan wrung her hands, biting her lip and looking fretful. “I don’t have much time, they’re probably on their way” she burst out, glancing over her shoulder fearfully.
Who was on their way? Who was she referring to? My protective instincts kicked in.
“Don’t worry about that dear, Nobody is going to take you away now that you’ve reached our pack” my mother said fiercely. She looked prepared to go into battle for her, but she had always adored Jordan.
My father kept quiet. He knew as well as I did that there had to be a good reason for her seeking sanctuary or it couldn’t be granted. Jordan wrung her hands together. “I don’t know where to start,” she said her voice breaking.
“Start at the beginning,” my mother said soothingly.
Jordan opened her mouth but then there was a loud rapping on the door. She gasped and began to tremble. My mother hugged her. “It’s okay, you’re not going anywhere” she murmured as Jordan began to cry.
My father got up and opened the door, he came back accompanied by several people. They all looked perplexed, except for one. Jordan’s father who looked beyond pissed as he glared at his daughter.
I recognized the Alpha and Luna of Jordan’s pack as well but not the redheaded woman with them. Jordan trembled violently.
“We’ve come to get my daughter back” her father spoke in a cold voice. “Let’s go Jordan. You’re being absolutely ridiculous” he hissed.
Jordan shook her head. My mother’s arms gripped her tighter as she scowled at Jordan’s father.
“I’m afraid that it won’t be that simple. Jordan has requested Sanctuary from us and we’re in the midst of discussing whether or not to grant it” my father said pleasantly. “I’m Alpha James and this is my wife Luna Serena, my son Jaxon, and his mate Alex” he introduced us.
“Alpha John, Luna Mary, Maxwell, and Stella,” said Alpha John quietly, looking at Jordan confused “I don’t understand why she would need sanctuary. She has always been safe in our pack. Jordan is there something you need to tell us?” he prompted, looking a bit grave, concern in his eyes.
“How about you all sit down” Alex cut in, raising an eyebrow. I could sense he didn’t like Jordan’s father either or the way he was staring at his daughter.
“Sanctuary is generally granted due to reasons of being abused, such as in domestic violence situations,” My father said very calmly, but with an edge to his voice as he regarded Jordan “Jordan have you experienced abuse at somebody’s hand?”
She sat up and then nodded quietly. “Stop lying” her father snarled and went to reach for her but Alpha John stopped him. “I would like to hear her,” he said grabbing her father’s hand and stopping him “And you are not to interfere,” he said with a sidelong glance.
“Oh honey, why didn’t you come to me?” Luna Mary said sounding genuinely shocked.
Jordan looked at her tearfully “Because you never would have believed me. My father has been physically abusing me ever since my mother was killed by rogues. He blames me for her death” she said in a slightly stronger voice.
“Lies” her father shouted, clenching his hands into fists “Complete bullshit” he swore.
“Sir, language,” my mother said sounding shocked, still holding Jordan “I must insist you keep it clean.”
“Do you have any proof?” asked my father, with a kindness in his voice.
Jordan looked at me. “Do you remember the day I told you I fell off a ladder and you gave me your blood?” she asked softly as I nodded grimly.
I remembered every bruise, cut, and scrape she had on that day. She must have been in agony, and I’d suspected she’d been lying when she said she’d fallen. “Yes, and I knew you were lying. The extent of your injuries was inconsistent with your story but looked as though you’d been punched and kicked repeatedly.”
A sharp inhale from everyone present. Jordan’s father was beginning to look nervous now, the bastard deserved to be hung and quartered.
“He’s her best friend, of course, he’s going to lie to help her,” Jordan’s father said angrily.
“Sir, my son is not a liar” growled my father.
“Please refrain from talking,” Alpha John said to Maxwell with a sigh.
“If you want more proof,” Jordan said pulling away from my mother, who let her go reluctantly.
She pulled up the sleeves of her long shirt, showing off bruises in varying stages of healing. Some were black, others dark purple. The Alpha and Luna of her pack looked stunned.
“You could have come to this and shown us, we would have done something,” Luna Mary said in a regretful tone, shooting their Gamma a dirty look.
“I had to leave. He’s selling me as a breeder” Jordan said and my disgust for the man grew.
“You son of a b***h” I breathed, my hands itching to wrap themselves around his neck and squeeze the ever-living daylight out of him “How can you even think of doing that to your own daughter? Your own flesh and blood?”
I hated the very concept of selling a girl as a breeder to alphas of a pack whose mate was unable to produce an heir. Luna Mary put a hand to her chest. Alpha John’s eyes narrowed as he stared at his Gamma. Stella cleared her throat “With all due respect, we are her guardians and as such, are allowed to make that decision” she said haughtily.
My father inclined his head. “True, but generally the girl is in agreement. I would lay bets that Jordan is not in this case?” he asked.
Jordan shook her head and then began to sob loudly, my mother rubbing circles on her back as she tried her best to comfort her. “I don’t want to be a breeder and I don’t want to kill my baby” she hiccupped, putting her hand on her stomach protectively.
“You’re pregnant” her father roared as Stella went pale. He got up and tried to attack her, but I got there first, pinning his arms behind his back.
“Give me a reason to hurt you” I whispered into his ear “One tiny little reason to tear you to shreds and I’ll take it.”
He flailed around as his Alpha looked at him disapprovingly. “Maxwell get ahold of yourself” he barked and then suddenly his eyes darkened and his aura grew “You will stay in your human form until we get back to the pack house and you will not cause any more trouble, you or Stella,” he said in his alpha tone. It was evident that he was not impressed by his Gamma’s behavior or how he conducted himself.
Maxwell immediately stopped flailing about and I dropped his arms. He flopped back onto a chair scowling but unable to do anything due to the alpha tone being used on him.
“Jordan” Alpha John said calmly, fixing his eyes on her as she shrank back in her seat, “I do have something to ask you. The way you have been treated is completely inappropriate and those responsible will be punished. Is there any way you would be willing to come back to the pack?”
Jordan took deep shuddering breaths and then looked him in the eyes. “Forgive me Alpha John, but I have no desire to go back to a pack that despises me for who I am and how I look. You see, the pack does not act kindly towards me and I have no wish to bring a child into a pack that would treat it as it treats me.”
“We’ve not been good leaders, have we” Luna Mary said sadly, looking at her husband.
He took her hand. “That will change when we get back. It seems we’ve had our heads in the sand and it’s time we took a good look at how everyone is treated in the pack.”
My father cleared his throat and then looked at me. “I leave this decision in regard to Jordan being granted Sanctuary to my son Jaxon. He is more than capable of making the right decision and I trust his judgment.”
I cleared my throat. “Jordan meets the requirements of being granted Sanctuary. She has been abused, both physically and mentally by the very pack meant to protect her. She risks the life of her unborn child, should she choose to go back. There is no doubt in my mind that the correct decision is to grant her said sanctuary and to welcome her into the full moon pack.”
Jordan’s eyes shone as she glanced at me gratefully. I gave her a wink. No way in hell I was going to send her back to that pack. Especially since I now knew she was pregnant.
“We’ll miss you,” Luna Mary said remorsefully “but we understand your decision. I’ll have your things sent over” she whispered, coming over and hugging Jordan with affection.
Alpha John shook her hand and then indicated for a silent Maxwell and Stella to follow him. We all watched them leave with a sigh of relief. The second the door shut with a decisive bang, my mother let out a giant whoop of delight and almost smothered Jordan to death “We’re pregnant” she cried “Oh I can’t wait to find out what you’re having?”
“Thank you so much” she breathed, still weeping as Alex came over and gave her a comforting peck on the cheek “You have no idea how much this means to me.”
The sad thing was, that I had an inkling of how much it did, and what hurt the most was that it was the very least of what she deserved. I had been the worst friend not checking up on her and I resolved to be a better friend from now on.
