Sarah POV
I sat at the table, only half listening as this old, boring elder droned on and on, Grant the asshole being his usual hot-headed self, his father and mother glaring at me. Let them, I thought smugly, I couldn’t care less. I had an ace up my sleeve and by god, I was going to use it. If they thought they were going to get rid of me this easily, then they had another thing coming.
“Wait” I interrupted them “there is something you should know about first.”
I bent down and rifled through my handbag, grabbing the pregnancy test that I’d deliberately stored inside of it and brought it out, letting the tissue paper fall onto the desk, as I waved the test around with a flourish, everyone gathered around the table leaning forward to peer at it.
Luna Mary made a choking sound. “That has to be fake” she accused, her voice shaking as I smiled widely at her “There is no way, Grant, it couldn’t possibly be, could it…” she trailed off.
I glanced at Grant. He didn’t look so damn smug now, I thought with a grin. If anything, he looked like he was about to be sick. He was taking deep breaths, his face pale, completely drained of all color. He was gripping the table tightly, bent over, while his father narrowed his eyes at the test and the elder looked concerned. As he should be. I had read up on the laws. I knew them well. They were completely stuck now and he knew it. His punishment was going to be laughable in comparison to what it might have been if I hadn’t been pregnant. I could have laughed at the expression on their faces. My plan had worked. I had saved my own ass. I rejoiced in their anger and their contempt of me. They couldn’t harm me, not while I carried the future heir of the future alpha. Not when it could cause harm to the unborn child. I placed a hand over my stomach protectively and smirked, glancing at everyone around the table.
“I was going to keep it a surprise,” I said sweetly “but you forced my hand. As you can see by the test, I’m pregnant and before you accuse me again Luna Mary” I said, with a deliberate pause and a hard look on my face “No it’s not fake and I can happily take another one if you want proof.”
“You b***h” breathed Grant, looking at me wildly “You planned this didn’t you?”
I looked at him innocently, blinking my big eyes at him, smiling a small smile at him “Why Grant whatever do you mean? You chose to be intimate with me, knowing what the consequences might be” I said pretending to be offended “So don’t even think of trying to pretend the child isn’t yours.”
Alpha John slammed his hand on the table and I jumped. I hadn’t been expecting that. He was more than angry, he was completely livid.
“Enough” he roared “Sarah, is this baby Grants. You will speak the truth” he boomed, using his alpha tone on me.
Not that it was going to make much of a difference. The baby was Grant’s so it didn’t matter that he was manipulating me to get the answer.
“The baby is Grant’s,” I said smoothly and saw Grant’s face droop.
His mother let out a sob. “I wanted grandchildren but not like this,” she said wretchedly.
Elder Jason looked unnerved. He rubbed his beard, a thoughtful expression on his face. “This changes everything” he explained with a regretful sigh “Unfortunately the pregnancy means that the punishment must be lenient, unless, you have a suggestion?”
“I don’t want the baby,” Grant said coldly “Kill her and it” he hissed.
“Grant,” his mother said shocked “you can’t kill an innocent child just because of who its mother is.”
“Why not?” he demanded “I’m pretty sure she drugged me the night it was conceived as well. I can’t prove it though,” he said with a scowl.
“Be that as it may, that baby still contains your DNA” his father said quietly “and the mother has rights to give birth to the child, if she so chooses. That is something that we are not allowed to interfere with.”
Grant swore, running a hand through his hair and muttering under his breath. His mother looked at him apologetically. “I know it’s not what you wanted, but maybe, in time, you could learn to accept it,” she said shooting me a look full of daggers.
Whatever. This baby was my ticket to freedom. Elder Jason looked troubled.
“Hang on,” he said calmly, putting his hands in the air “I don’t believe this lady should get off scot-free. What she did was a serious crime. To let her go unpunished would only serve to encourage other pack members to do the same. We must not allow other shifters to think that they are above the law simply because they carry an unborn child, else every female will use that as a line of defense when they commit a crime.”
Wait, what now? I thought that being pregnant automatically meant my freedom. They couldn’t do anything to risk harming the child. It was illegal. So that meant that they couldn’t do anything. Didn’t it? What were they going to do? For the first time, I began to feel a slight sense of panic. I bit the inside of my lip, trying to prevent my outrage from bursting out. This wasn’t going to plan. This wasn’t how I imagined it. This councilman was an i***t. How dare he try to interfere in something he knew nothing about! How dare he try to punish me in a way that was not the usual norm? I glanced towards the door, wondering if it was possible to get through it and shift before I could get caught. Grant caught my eye and shook his head as I stared at him blankly, struggling to maintain my composure.
“What exactly are you proposing” Luna Mary said puzzled “You have already said that we cannot do anything that is going to harm or risk harming the unborn child, which really doesn’t leave room to do anything when you think about it.”
Elder Jason shook his head. “That’s not true and while the woman does reserve the right to be allowed to give birth if she so chooses it, there is nothing in the law about her being allowed to keep the baby” he pointed out as I stiffened “or that she can’t be punished once she’s safely given birth.”
Grant was nodding thoughtfully now, while I didn’t like where this train of thought was going.
“It seems unusually cruel,” Luna Mary said apprehensively.
“Perhaps, but then what she has done to Alpha Grant was also cruel. She premeditated the crime, plotted it, and instigated it without hesitation. I ask you Luna Mary, Alpha John, and Alpha Grant. Do you want this woman, to be the one to bring up your son or daughter or grandchild?” he asked, peering around at them all.
“You can’t take my baby” I protested, but they ignored me.
“No,” Luna Mary said in a frosty tone “I don’t want her bringing up my grandchild. She lost that privilege doing what she did.”
“No,” Grant said, “my son or daughter deserves better than her as a mother.”
Alpha John just shook his head. I began to back away, feeling panic rising inside of me. They weren’t supposed to do this. They were supposed to let me go! Banish me or something. Not do this! Not take my baby from me!
Elder Jason fixed his gaze on me. There was no remorse on his face, no regret, just a stone-cold look on his face that made me flinch. I felt cold shivers run down my spine. This man was not afraid of me, nor taken in by my feminine wiles. He was not about to be lenient because of my gender or because of my pregnancy like I had assumed. He was about to rain down on me the hardest punishment he could. I instinctively knew that he was going to. It was in the way he looked at me and the way he acted. I swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry” I croaked, my eyes pleading with them all as they deliberately looked away “I just, lost my head for a moment,” I said pretending to sob “It won’t happen again. I promise, please believe me” I cried, trying to gain some measure of sympathy from them, but even Luna Mary wouldn’t meet my eyes and she was as soft-hearted as they came. My acting abilities weren’t going to help me this time.
“Young lady, I have devised your punishment. You will be placed in a cell, for the duration of your pregnancy. You will be given the care and provisions you need to have a healthy pregnancy and the care to give birth. However, upon delivery, the child will automatically be taken from you and given to its rightful father, which in this case happens to be Alpha Grant.
You will be given time to heal. To recover. You will then face public execution for your crimes. If in the meantime, before the execution and after you have given birth, the Alpha chooses to torture you, it is his prerogative. I leave that entirely up to him.”
His voice was flat, dispassionate. He could have been reciting the weather for all the care he showed.
My lips quivered. “But I thought” I began whispering.
“I know what you thought. You are not the first to think that being pregnant would automatically grant you a free pass. In the old days, it would, but times are changing and the elders are evolving to make women more equal to men. Perhaps, if you had realized the seriousness and the gravity of the consequences of your actions, you might not have been so foolish to break the laws. We have laws for a reason and even though you are young, you are not naïve, or innocent. It is a shame that a life such as yours is to be cut short at such a young age.”
Oh god. This was really happening. I felt the walls closing in on me.
“Is everyone in agreement with me?” Elder Jason asked in the background.
“We are,” Luna Mary said speaking for everyone.
“Good, then I bid you a good day, and with your blessing will retire to my room for some much-needed rest.”
“Certainly Elder Jason, thank you for your assistance in this matter,” Alpha John said, shaking the man’s hand and ushering him out.
My knees shook. I glanced at the window. I braced myself but Grant beat me to it. “Stay in your human form” he bellowed in his alpha tone.
f**k. I couldn’t disobey. He gripped my arm, tight, digging his nails in as I gave a cry of pain. “You’re coming with me” he gloated “Hope you like your cell, ’cause it’s going to be your home for the next few months.”
I screamed myself hoarse as he dragged me with ease towards the dungeon, kicking and flailing, until he shoved me into a cell and shut the door with a loud bang, the sound so final, that I immediately fell silent, aware for the first time, the hopelessness of my situation and how badly I had failed. I knew what had happened to my father and Stella. There was no one to save me now. Dman Grant and his family to hell. They would come to regret this decision and I would make them pay, no matter how long it took me.
