                    Jaxon POV
It felt quiet, well reasonably quiet around the house without Jordan’s presence. My mother was genuinely upset to see her go. She thought of Jordan as the daughter she never got to have. I raced through the forest, my paws thudding along the ground, sniffing the grass and breathing in the fresh air, the smell of pine and dirt wafting into my nostrils as I headed deep into the forest, Alex’s large silver and white wolf keeping pace beside me.
We frolicked, playfully darting and nipping at each other and rolling on top of one another. We roughhoused, and then ran some more, finally coming to the top of a cliff face and sitting on our haunches, looking over the forest and listening to the distant sounds of small and large creatures in the distance. I sniffed, relaxing, the gentle breeze caressing my fur. It was glorious. I had needed this. Alex needed this. To just cut loose and relax, away from the pack house. Aries and Crowley needed to run and give their wolves free rein.
It’s so peaceful out here and so quiet. The dirt is so soft beneath my paws
my wolf enthused.
Tell me about it. It feels nice to get away from the house and the pack, just for a little while, and be outdoors.
Even better that we get to spend it out here with our mate and Crowley he said wickedly I can think of a few things we could do with our mate he added.
You have a dirty mind I sighed as my mind flooded with images from my wolf of what he would like to do to Alex.
I just like to use my imagination, a lot. Nothing wrong with that Aries said insulted it’s creativity after all.
Some might call it something different Aries. No matter how innocent you try to make it, what you just showed me was like watching a porno film.
Ah, but a tasteful porno film, right?
How the hell does that make a difference? I spluttered.
He sulked. I put up a block. Damn, mutt. There was no arguing with him sometimes.
Alex cuddled up beside my wolf, and we lay down together, content to be in each other’s company. I rubbed my snout against his back, and he gave a low growl that almost resembled a kitten’s purr. It was cute and adorable. He licked my face, and I gave him a lick along his nose, making him jump back slightly startled, with a gross look on his face. I snorted while he rubbed his head against me.
The sound of footsteps wildly crashing through the forest, heavy breathing, and hysterical sobbing sounded behind us. I turned around, c****d my head, and jumped to my feet, prepared to fight the intruder. Alex did the same, the both of us squaring off against a potential foe. I sniffed the air, puzzled. Whoever it was had only recently become a rogue. Their scent was not particularly putrid yet, only mildly smelling slightly rotten. Alex mind-linked me.
Smells like a new rogue. Also sounds like a young female, alone. Not particularly a huge threat he commented.
Yeah, but that doesn’t mean we should let down our guard. Just because she’s female doesn’t mean she’s weak necessarily. There’s a reason she’s a rogue and a new one at that. She’s either been banished by her pack or she’s willingly denounced her pack. Neither reason is a good one.
You forget that there are sometimes good reasons for denouncing a pack, I did for you remember
That was different and you know it. This female is not in another male’s company.
Perhaps he was killed by other rogues? She could be seeking safety in our territory.
Alex reminded me.
I wasn’t willing to bet on it. We pricked our ears as the sound came closer, the woman heaving for breath, and then she came stumbling out of the trees, flailing her arms wildly, her hair streaming behind her, her dress torn and ripped, her body covered in bruises, a desperate look on her face. As soon as she saw our wolves she halted in her tracks, holding her hands up in surrender.
Oh my god, that’s Stella, Jordan’s stepmother I snarled, frothing at the mouth that b***h, how dare she try and get to Jordan.
She looks like she’s running from something or someone. Maybe we should offer her assistance?
Are you insane? She forfeits her life if she tries to come near Jordan or have you forgotten that?
Jordan’s not here anymore Jaxon. Show some compassion Alex said coaxingly.
I growled at him but shifted to human form.
Her eyes were wild, and she was trembling with fear. Her voice shook. “Please, don’t hurt me” she pleaded. Despite my anger, I felt a twinge of pity for her. She looked a complete mess and was sobbing profusely. “Please, I know that I was horrible and that I don’t deserve to be helped” she wailed, sinking to her knees in front of me, grabbing my legs as I looked at her askance “but I swear I’ll change. Please, please don’t leave me to the mercies of the rogues. I barely made it here alive” she sniffled “and Maxwell, Maxwell is dead. God the pain of losing my mate” she shrieked, “it hurts so bad. He couldn’t just leave the pack, he had to try and fight for Sarah” her voice was barely above a whisper now, so full of grief that I couldn’t help but wince in sympathy “and he lost the fight. He didn’t care about me, not really. I was just a means to an end for him. Something to discard at will.”
Alex shifted and shot me a knowing look. I hesitated. I couldn’t get past how she had hurt Jordan but I also couldn’t bring myself to leave this pitiful woman in the woods. She didn’t look like the haughty, prideful woman Jordan had described. If anything, she looked scared, like a frightened little girl. I sighed. I gently grabbed her arms and helped her up. “Why weren’t you using your wolf form?” I asked her softly.
“I still have some wolfsbane in my system and my wolf has always been weak” she babbled.
I ran a hand through my hair and looked at her nonchalantly. “I won’t be making the final decision,” I told her gravely ” Jordan will have to be informed and asked for her opinion. If she wants you gone, then so be it. She’s the victim in all of this and I won’t remake her one, not even for your sake. Do you understand me?”
She nodded. “But you’re not kicking me out at the moment?” she asked hopefully.
“Not yet,” I said grimly “but I wouldn’t exactly get my hopes up if I were you.”
She gave a small nod and I gestured to Alex, both of us leading the way expertly through the woods, keeping to our human forms. Neither one of us wanted to carry her on our backs and our wolves disliked the idea even more. She followed silently, her head bowed down, tears trailing down her cheeks. The tension in the air was thick. Alex took hold of my hand and gave me a loving smile. I gave him a disgruntled look. He was so soft-hearted. It was one of the things I loved about him but sometimes it could be a right pain. Like now for instance. He was too compassionate for his own good. I didn’t want his good nature to be taken advantage of. Still, I supposed it was a good trait for somebody to have. He was also extremely humble and by god was he patient with my mother. She could test the patience of a saint, my mother.
We reached the pack grounds, several pack members giving us curious looks as we passed, Stella not daring to look up. I opened the pack door and motioned her inside. “First I need to speak to mother and father,” I said shortly “as they are Alpha and Luna. So come with me” I told her, Alex following behind as we began to make our way towards the study. I was so lost in my head that I failed to pay attention to the fact the door was closed, or that Alex was trying to pull me back, my hand automatically opening the door as I barged in, staring in shock as I took in the scene of my mother lying on the desk, her blouse pulled open, my father cupping her breast and about to undo the zipper on his pants. I heard Alex let out a choking sound in the background. My head refused to turn away, no matter how much I willed it to. I was in too much shock. I was completely horrified. I blushed bright red, my eyes darting away, gritting my teeth.
“Haven’t you heard of knocking” my father shouted, as my mother sat up and frantically did up her buttons, her face turning flushed as I stood there mutely.
My mouth refused to move. My feet were planted on the floor. I thought my eyes were going to bulge out of my head. “Oh no,” my mother said in dismay, finishing doing up her buttons and then coming in front of me and waving her hands in front of my face “I think we broke him,” she said in a shocked voice, turning to my father. “What should we do?”
My father snorted. “More likely he’s in shock” he muttered “Maybe next time he’ll knock first,” he said petulantly, clearly put out. I’d ruined their fun.
I had just interrupted my parents as they were about to do the deed. Stella and Alex were silent, both gaping. Finally, my mouth spoke. Unfortunately, it chose to speak the most unintelligent sentence it could think of. “The door wasn’t locked.” My father shot me an exasperated look, sitting stiffly down on the chair behind the desk as my mother stood behind him, kneading his shoulders. She raised an eyebrow and eyed me cooly “So what do we owe the pleasure of this visit?” she asked. “Not that I don’t love seeing you and darling Alex there, but you could have picked a much more convenient time” she added.
I reluctantly stepped aside and waved for Stella to come forward. “This is Jordan’s stepmother” I explained, holding my hand to stop them before they could vehemently protest or shout “I understand what she did and the sentencing she was given, but I also believe that we should speak to Jordan and find out what she wants to do. This is her home, and she reserves the right to forgive Stella or not. In the meantime, at least for the next hour or so, surely, we can allow her to have some food and water and show her at least some hospitality?”
My mother’s lips flattened but there was a look of sympathy on her face as she glanced at Stella who was looking panicked. She turned to her husband. “Dear, I’ll speak to Jordan, don’t worry. In the meantime” she said shooting me a look that I couldn’t quite decipher “Take Stella to the kitchen and get her something to eat and Jaxon” she said in a no-nonsense tone of voice “Don’t let Stella out of your sight. While you might be quite forgiving, some of us aren’t as compassionate and as kind as Alex and you are.
If she makes one wrong move, I won’t hesitate to show her exactly what I’m capable of, and you better pray that Jordan understands your intentions behind this because the last thing I want is your friendship ruined over something like this” she said with finality in her voice as I nodded and motioned for Stella to follow Alex and I. “Oh and Jaxon” she added in a sugary sweet tone of voice as I looked over my shoulder, my expression sheepish, “do knock from now on. Just because we’re your parent’s doesn’t mean we don’t have a love life, otherwise I wouldn’t be pregnant right now, would I?” she pointed out and I hustled the hell out of there, before she could impart any more of her infamous wisdom on me, Alex laughing quietly behind me.
