HAZEL'S POV
"Dad," I sniffled as I wiped my tears with the back of my hand. "What happened to you? Where have you been all this time? Why did you leave me?"
The questions poured out of me like water from a broken dam. I saw the upheaval in his eyes. He wasn't only confused by my questions, but he was also angry. But angry with whom or what?
"Hazel, baby, trust me, this was not my doing," he admitted. His face was now stone-cold and his eyes burned with fury.
Zander was quiet, he did not utter a word. He just kept scrutinizing my father, like he was trying to solve a complex puzzle. He felt my confusion, so he walked up and faced my dad, and he placed his hand around my waist for support. My father directed his focus on the hand that held my waist then his gaze strolled up and landed on Zander's face. "You must be Alpha Zander; my son-in-law."
"Yes, I am Alpha Zander," he said disregarding the part about being my dad's son-in-law. "And you must be James or should I say El Capitan James?" Zander had a mocking tone to his voice.
James' face instantly fell into a scowl and the atmosphere got bitter. "Alpha, I can see that you do not trust me, but I assure you I would never hurt my daughter. She's my everything."
Zander began to fume, "Your everything? You expect me to believe that? You left her for eleven years. There were no phone calls, no emails, no letters. She thought you died and it broke her."
I had to say something before my hot-headed mate blows the roof off the mansion. "Zander, it's ok. He said it was not his fault and I think we should hear him out."
"Kitten, how will I remain the big bad Alpha everyone knows and fears if you keep calming me down?" He creased his brows. I flashed him a smile and shook my head.
"Now, dad. I am overjoyed and relieved that you are alive and well, but Zander is right. I need answers."
"I know Sunshine, but for me to do so, I will have to tell you everything that happened to me, starting from the day I went rock climbing 11 years ago." I gulped, something told me that I was not going to like this story. My dad took a deep breath. "Someone did this to us, Hazel." He ran his hand over his locks.
"What do you mean, dad? You're not making sense."
"Sunshine, what I am trying to say is that someone tried to kill me. Someone knocked me out and left me to die on the side of that mountain. If Ushi's father never found me, I would be dead," he explained.
I gasped, I could not imagine a single person who would want to kill my dad. My stomach churned and my head began to spin. "But who... Who would do that to you?"
"I don't know, Sunshine. But the blow to the head caused me to have amnesia for the last eleven years. The only thing I remembered after was the name El Capitan James, so everyone in the Polar Moon pack thought it was my name," he explained.
I saw that Zander became comfortable with my father's justification. "I am so sorry, James, but you have to remember something, maybe an enemy or a jealous co-worker from the past did this to you," Zander mumbled.
"That's just it, Alpha. Ever since I got my memories back a couple of months ago, I've been thinking about the who, the what, and the why. So far I have come up with nothing."
"Couple of months? So your memory came back a couple of months ago?" I was pissed all over again.
"Luna Hazel, it was not your father's fault. He wanted to come to you the moment he remembered you. He was prepared and ready, but before we could make our journey, our pack was attacked by rogues and dark witches. Half of our people were killed including my father," Ushi clarified.
My heart softened. "I'm sorry Ushi, and please call me Hazel," I sighed. "This is too much."
"You see, Sunshine, I wanted to come to you but the pack needed me. So I stayed until we hunted most of the rogues and killed them."
"We?" I queried. My dad was human, what could he accomplish against a werewolf?
"Kitten, you remembered earlier when I said I smelled something odd?" Zander asked.
"Yes."
"Well, Kitten. I knew I smelt a werewolf but his scent was different," Zander tried to explain.
"So you smelt Ushi, what's the big deal?"
"No, Kitten," Zander exhaled. "Yes, I picked up Ushi's scent, I could tell that he was not a member of my pack, but I could also tell he was not a rogue either. But the scent I picked up was coming from someone else and the smell was familiar." His eyes went to my dad's and my dad's eyes landed on me.
"NO FUCKING WAY... DAD, YOU'RE A...?" I could not even finish my question.
"Yes, Sunshine, I am."
My head began to spin as confusion clouded my thoughts. My throat got dry and blood pounded against my eardrums causing the voices and the surrounding sounds to be distant. My hands shook and my feet tingled. I knew what was happening, I was having a full-blown panic attack. My vision obscured. It was like I was looking through a fish-eye lens. My chest tightened and my eyes fluttered. My body began to spasm. I felt my body collapse and then the darkness and the pain chewed at my insides, but I was not concentrated on the stress that my body was undergoing.
The only thing that I was focused on was the fact that I just found out that my father, my hero, and my first love was a motherfucking werewolf.
