???'s POV
"Zander," Hazel shouted in relief when she saw her husband walking towards them. She ran into his arms and hugged him with everything she had in her. "I'm so happy you're OK."
"I've only been gone a day," Zander declared. "But I'm delighted to see you too, Kitten," he leaned down and kissed her lips.
"Sunshine," James called to her.
"Dad," Hazel yelped, running out of Zander's arms and into her father's. "Are you OK?"
"Yes, my love. I am OK."
Declan entered the scene, and Hazel's eyes and his clashed. "How about you, are you alright, Declan?" Hazel asked him. His wolf was affected just by the sweet, saccharine tone of her voice.
"Yes, Luna. I am fine, thanks." He stated. Zander felt his turmoil, and it was at that point he figured it was time to have a little chat with his Gamma.
"Declan, can I talk to you over here for a moment?" Zander requested.
"Sure Alpha."
"Wait, where's Aunt Jules?" Hazel asked.
"Don't worry, Kitten, she's safe. James will fill you in," Zander answered while he and Declan ventured off to the corner. "Let's take a stroll, Declan."
"Don't go, man. Alpha's gonna kill us," Maddox stated.
"Sure thing Alpha."
The first three minutes of the walk were awkward and quiet. Zander was rethinking his approach, while Declan was bracing for whatever punishment his Alpha saw fit. He had been disrespectful and deceitful when he fell in love with his Luna and kept falling in love with her, even when he knew she belonged to his Alpha. Declan couldn't take the uncertainty anymore, so he broke the ice. "Do what you must, Alpha. My wolf and I won't fight back."
"We won't?" Maddox asked, confused.
Zander blew out a small chuckle. "I didn't ask you here to kill you. I am here to talk."
"To talk? I don't do talk. Just tell him kill us, Declan."
"OK, Alpha. What do you wish to talk about?"
"Don't play dumb, Declan, you know what I want to talk about."
"Luna Hazel."
"Yes. MY mate and MY wife." A misty, dark cloud, thick and shiny, overtook the green in Zander's eyes.
"I didn't mean to fall in love with her, Alpha. I am so sorry. Please forgive me," Declan sobbed. He fell to his knees and lowered his head into his hands. "I just wish I could stop loving her. Believe me, I tried, but I just can't. I just can't do it."
Zander's eyes softened. He knew Declan cared a lot for his Luna and he felt that because Hazel's twin was his mate, the sexual connection would be there, but he didn't for a second believed that he truly loved Hazel. It was all about the confusion in thinking she was his mate. Even so, Zander knew his Gamma was hurting either way. And as his Alpha and friend, he should have been there for him either way. So, he, too, was in the wrong. "I apologize to you, Declan. I can't imagine how hard this must be on you."
"... Yeah, I agree with you, Alpha, and if you must kill me, then I won't fight back..."
"Hey, hey! Who said anything about killing us?" Maddox roared. "Let's not get carried away, Declan. Alpha just apologized to us."
"He did?"
"Yes, now shut up and keep your organs inside your body."
Zander continued. "Stand up, man. This all has been one great misunderstanding." Zander sighed. "You, me, and Carson had always been there for each other, and as your friend, I should have understood that you would do nothing to betray me."
"But I did betray you, Alpha." Declan rose to his feet. "I wanted what is yours."
Zander clenched his fists, but then he relaxed and loosened his frame. "And I am saying I forgive you."
"No, no, no. You Shouldn't forgive me."
"Why?"
"Because I still want what's yours. I still want Hazel with every breath in my body. And I don't think I will ever stop wanting her until I meet my second chance mate. And I really believe that the Moon Goddess has forsaken me and I will get no second chances."
There was an uncomfortable silence between the two, followed by the inhalation and exhalation of exasperated breaths.
Zander knew there was more Declan wanted to get off his chest. "What are you planning?" Zander looked him dead in the eyes.
Declan held eye contact, but quickly looked away before he spoke. "I plan to remain behind in the Fae World when we get there."
Zander grunted. "I want to tell you that you can't fucking leave the pack, but —." Zander's grunts were vibrating off his chest. "I would be selfish and cruel to force you to stay."
"Thank you for understanding, Alpha," Declan bowed, then he walked off.
"And Declan." He turned to meet Zander's gaze. "Please, just call me Zander, man. We grew up together, for fuck's sake."
Declan grinned. "So, Zander, what did you think about the Dragon King? Is he cool?"
"I think so. He didn't give me any bad vibes," Zander sighed. "And he is Julia's mate." He caught up to Declan, and the two began their walk back to the others.
"Poor fellow," Declan huffed, and Zander punched his shoulder. "Ouch!"
"That's my wife's aunt you're referring to," Alpha chuckled. "But I get it. They are Polar Opposites."
"That's a great way of putting it," Declan laughed. "He's obviously a freak and Julia is — well, she's like a nun."
Zander couldn't get the mental picture out of his head. "Thanks for that, man," he smacked Declan on the back of his head, and reflexes made Declan slap Alpha across the cheek. Zander's head swung back a bit.
Declan paused. "I am so sorry," he gulped. But Zander erupted in a fit of laughter.
"Please just stop doing that to your face. You look constipated."
The two wolves laughed at each other's jokes as they strolled toward the group.
Hazel was staring in disbelief that the two were acting friendly.
"I know what you're thinking, Lun-Lun," Carson threw his arm over Hazel's shoulder. "Long ago, there were three pups who grew up like brothers. One became an Alpha. The most handsome of the three, a Beta, and the other, A Gamma. All was well in brotherly love and Wolf's Pond until —" Carson paused for dramatic effect.
Hazel was listening attentively.
"Until a woman got between them."
Hazel shoved Carson while she rolled her eyes.
"Yes, Luna, they had a falling out over pussy. Your pussy, to be exact." Carson shook his head.
"Wow!" That was all Hazel could say.
"Carson!" Zander rumbled as soon as he saw Carson hanging on to his mate. "Get your paws —"
"Man, I thought you'd matured," Carson scoffed. "I'm mated to Gabrielle. I don't want your mate. I am not Declan."
"Hey, that's a low blow, man," Declan whined.
"That's not what I'm talking about, you idiot," Zander spoke through gritted teeth. "Why the hell are you touching my mate while you have a fucking boner?"
Everyone now had their eyes on Carson's erection. "Layla did it, Zander. She is teaching me ways of naturally enhancing the size. I promised Gabrielle to take a gift back from this trip."
"And you think a deformed Shlong is the way to go," Dimitri burped as he sucked on the neck of a blonde woman."
"Who the hell is that?" Zander roared, staring in bewilderment at the scene. He could tell the woman was in her late twenties, plus she was a human.
"This is Charlene. She's a supplier," Dimitri explained as he wiped the corners of his mouth with his hanky. "She is one of the few humans we keep at the Winterbourne Castle to help satisfy our thirst."
"That's just a fancy way of telling us she is your pet," James scoffed.
"Call it what you must, James. But I'm just thankful that Isis decided to bring her through the portal for me." Dimitri let out. "You don't have to look at me like that. All my pets are here of their own free will. Isn't that right, Charlene?" Dimitri cooed. The brown-eyed beauty looked up at the vampire with a hazy gaze.
"Yes, Master," she slurred, high on vampire pheromones.
"See. She's not in any pain," Dimitri recited.
"Well, this is still a nasty practice," Hazel added.
"If you say so, Cousin."
"Stop calling me that," Hazel rolled her eyes.
A heavy, brooding rift entered the atmosphere and soon all eyes were on Julia and Dreadwing.
They were walking side by side with their hands intertwined.
"My King, you're back!" Layla shouted from over where she stood, dropping to her knees with her ass protruding in the air. Soon the rest of the dragon people followed. Some were crying tears of joy to see their King was back.
"I am so honoured to be back and to share this phenomenon news with you that our beautiful queen, Julia, has decided to stay with us," Dreadwing spoke, his views searching for one dragon in particular. He wondered where Scorch was hiding.
A collection of gasps erupted in the air, while a chorus of gleeful shouts ricocheted from off the walls of the cave.
"Aunt Jules, you can't be serious," Hazel stepped up to greet Julia. Tears pooled in get eyes, she knew what this meant. "Tell me this isn't true."
"But it is, Sweet Pea." Jules hurried to her. She cupped her cheeks. "Just like how you have your destiny to fulfil, I have mine. And Dreadwing and the dragon people are mine," she finished by kissing Hazel on the forehead.
Hazel's eyes bore past Julia and landed on the glistening Dragon standing behind her, but Dreadwing was too stunned soaking up the Luna's features, down to her tiny freckles that peppered her neat, button nose.
She did not only share a striking resemblance to his best friend, but it was also like they were clones of each other. He didn't need to ask who she was. He knew that this young girl was his best friend's daughter.
"You must be, Hazel. It is an honour to meet you, my child." Dreadwing clasped Hazel's palm between his hands. "I have a message for you."
"For me? From whom?"
"Your mother, Lucinda."
