???'s POV
Tick-tock, tick-tock. Zander laid awake in the twilight of his bedroom. The sounds of the clock ticking and Hazel's shallow breathing were the only melodies that kept him company.
He could make out the shadowy silhouettes that the furniture rendered against the moonlight that peeked in through the windows. His green eyes sparkled brightly like two large fireflies; beautiful, but sad.
Hazel woke twice more that night. She had the same nightmare as before. Zander needed to know why she was dreaming of Magnus and who this Harper was? Was she even real? Was she in danger? He vowed to himself that when he got back he would find out. He mentally wrote it down on his everlasting list of significant things to do. Number one was to find Zoey.
Zander craned his neck and sought the time on the antique Victorian clock. It was 3:30 am. Time for him and Dimitri to set out on their quest.
He quietly slipped out of bed. He pulled on the thickest, warmest pants he could find in his closet; it was black and it had two pockets on the front with two to the back. He grabbed a simple white t-shirt and slipped it over his torso, followed by a thick blue sweater. He topped off his look with a black and blue windbreaker, that was perfect for the snow and cold. A blue scarf circled his neck. Mittens and muffs warmed his hands and ears.
"Kitten," he whispered against her ear. She shuffled for a few seconds, and then her eyes tried to find Zander in the dark. She cooed when she saw green orbs lighting up the room. "It's time for me to leave, Kitten. I'll be back in two days," he lowered his head and captured her lips. She moaned at the sensations and tingles his kiss provided. He pulled away, knowing he wouldn't be able to control himself if he continued with the kiss.
"Be careful Zander and remember I love you," she told him with sleep still in her throat. He kissed her once more and declared his love for her.
She snuggled back in the comfort of their bed. He kissed her forehead then established his way to the exit. He quietly closed the door behind him and made his way to the main room.
Dimitri was already there. He was sitting reading an old newspaper with his legs crossed. "What took you so long, mutt?" He spoke playfully.
"Good morning to you too," Zander smirked.
In walked an overly dressed Carson. He looked like he was ready to pose for a winter magazine. "I am ready, guys," he declared as he secured the glove on his hands.
"Where the fuck do you think you're going?" Zander was still furious with him.
"I am coming with you, Alpha. The more people you have, the better. You don't know what will be waiting for you out there."
"That is why I am taking Declan and Rollo with me."
Zander mind-linked Declan earlier and told him the plan. He and Rollo should be down any minute.
Hurt was evident in Carson's eyes. "Look, man, I know you are angry, but this is about finding Zoey... and..."
"You do not get to say her name," Zander made a quick stride and gripped Carson by his collar. "I said you will stay here, pup. I need you to keep an eye on Hazel," Zander released Carson. "She had a few nightmares last night that has gotten me worried," he sighed. "And Carson, I trust you to keep her safe. Report to me if anything happens to her or the pack. My mind-link will be open."
Carson felt relieved. "Yes, Alpha. I promise you, I will keep this pack and Luna safe until you get back."
Zander was angry with his beta, but he knew he would let nothing happen to their Luna.
Rollo and Declan entered the room. They were also dressed for the weather.
Dimitri placed the newspaper on the table and rose to his feet. "Ok, mutts. Chop-chop, off we go now."
"You weren't planning on leaving without me?" Isis walked up to the front door and perched her hand on the handle. "Are you ready or not? I have to be back to bake my New Year's Eve pudding."
"Isis, are you sure you can handle the journey that lies ahead?" Zander quirked an eyebrow.
"What? You think I am too old to keep up with you young studs?" She cackled. "I assure you, I can more than manage."
Rollo tightened his laces and Declan secured his muffs.
"Wait, that is what you're wearing?" Carson pointed on Dimitri. He still wore his regular attire."It's negative three degrees outside."
"The cold does not affect me. I'm a vampire, It's not as if I can perish from hyperthermia."
"Ok, but I bet you still can freeze your balls off," Carson howled in laughter. Dimitri scowled at the insignificant creature.
"Ok, let's go, everyone," Zander announced before he whispered to Carson a few more instructions and then the five friends made their way to Dead Man's Peak.
"Holy fuck! It is colder than the North Pole out here," Declan exclaimed as he felt the icy air biting the skin of his exposed face.
"We will drive for an hour or so before we arrive at the mountains," Zander instructed for them to enter his 2020 Subaru Forrester. The shade of green matched his eyes perfectly.
"Shotgun," Rollo shouted, and then he hurried to the passenger's side. His entire body froze before he could even touch the handle of the door. Isis waved her hand, grinning as she showed off her powers.
"I am so sorry, deary, but I get to ride shotgun." Isis stepped around Rollo's bulky frame. She did not release him until she sat comfortably in the front seat.
"No fair, Isis. I cannot believe you used your magic on me like that," Rollo whined.
"Just get the fuck in the car, Rollo," Zander bellowed.
Rollo, Declan and Dimitri all piled in the backseat. Declan complained about being put in the middle.
"Only a virgin boy complains about not liking being in the middle," Rollo chuckled.
"Nice one," Dimitri added as he also began to laugh.
"That's a low blow, man," Declan sighed.
Trees passed their eyes in a blur as the car darted on the white blanket covered road.
"Are We There Yet?" Rollo was getting restless.
"No, and stop wriggling around like that. What are you, a toddler?" Declan sighed.
"No, I'm just not used to travelling in cars. I am a wolf, I prefer to run freely."
"Oh, right. I forgot you are not used to the finer things in life... You know, since you grew up as a rogue," Declan grinned.
"So, you think having all these material things makes you better than me?"
"That's not what I meant."
"Why must you wolves always have to be at each other's throats?" Dimitri yawned, then he folded his arms across his chest and rested his head on the headrest. He closed his eyes and dosed while the wolves continued to bicker.
"Then what the hell did you mean, asshole?" Rollo was getting heated. His wolf was close to the surface.
