ZANDER'S POV
I didn't have the time to be wasting on a love triangle. I could smell the she-snake's arousal and Salim wasn't hiding his either.
The fury that swept off Mullins was almost stifling. I had to intervene. "Mullins, how do we get to Serpents Valley?" This question seemed to yank everyone back to the matter at hand - except for Mullins.
Mullins glared at Thelma for a few more seconds then he slithered up to her and planted a wet kiss on her lips. Salim hissed, his snake tongue rattled in frustration out of his head. Mullins pulled from the kiss. "This is my wife, Thelma."
We exchanged greetings but Thelma kept her head down after that. "Mullins, I don't mean to be rude, but time is of the essence," Isis spoke. She had been quiet since we arrived. I wondered what was that about.
"Well witch, I have never been there, but I know where the entrance is."
"Then tell us," I said.
"It's at the science lab," Mullins explained. "We usually don't permit visitors to enter Serpents Corp."
"But they aren't just any visitors Mullins. They defeated the dark witches," Salim added.
Thelma's head snapped to look over at us. "You are the ones?" She beamed. "Thank you, my father was taken seven years ago and I believe he is still alive, that their leader is holding him someplace -"
A loud slap echoed throughout the building. "How many times have I told you not to talk without my permission," Mullins rasped.
"I was only telling them about father - I didn't mean to -" He cut her off again with another slap sending her sailing to the ground.
Salim hurried to help Thelma and Gidian was at the surface. "How dare you lay a hand on your wife!" Gidian was angry.
Mullins was shocked, he didn't understand why it was such a big deal. "Don't you train your woman, Alpha?" He asked.
"Train her? You mean if I hit my mate? Never - you're a sick excuse for a male."
"Well this is not Wolf's Pond or earth, this is how we do things here in Serpentine."
"It was never like this when my father was ruler," Thelma spoke. "He was a loving and caring leader. We felt safe and protected when he was here."
"Shut-up, shut-up you slimy bitch!" Mullins shouted.
"Mommy," a small snake-boy ran over to his mother. "Are you ok, mommy?" The boy snarled at Mullins.
"Yes, I am SJ," Thelma kissed the boy's head.
"You have a son, Thelma? You have a son with him?" Salim slithered away from her.
"Yes, she is my wife, it's not my fault that you didn't know. You haven't been here in five years," Mullins laughed.
"You - you sick bastard. You are evil," Salim wiped his tears.
No one seemed to notice the small boy crawling towards Mullins. He extended his fangs and bit Mullins in his side. "I told you I would kill you if you hurt my mommy again." And he bit him again. Mullins slapped the boy across his face sending him flying across the room. I wolf-sped and caught the child before he hit the wall.
I knew that a fight was coming, but Isis wouldn't allow it. She extended her palms in the air and Salim and Mullins froze in place. "What did you do to me witch?" Mullins spat.
"Julia, can you read his mind?" Isis asked.
"Yes, if I touch his forehead." Julia hurried over to him and placed the bottom of her palm against his forehead.
"Get away from me," Mullins protested but his complaints turned into a painful scream.
Julia dropped to the floor panting. James hurried over to her and helped her to her feet. "What did you see, Julia?" James asked.
"It was him, he let the witches in to kill his people."
"What?" Salim stuttered. "Why would he do that?"
"Be-because," Julia struggled. "He wanted power and he knew they had Titus, Thelma's father - so he made a deal with the dark witches. He gave them a list of all the snake-people who still wanted Titus as their leader and he told the witches to drain them of their venom."
"So he was the one who let them in - I knew someone must have because we were sure the entrances were sealed," Salim scoffed. "Release me, Isis, I won't do anything stupid." Isis released him.
"I heard him telling someone that the Demon wolf was here," the little boy said.
"What?" I asked.
"Yes, he spoke in his communication bowl," SJ said.
"I am sorry young lad that your father is such an evil man," I ruffled his hair.
"He's not my father - my mother named me after my real father, Salim Junior."
"Is this true Thelma, is he mine?" Salim asked.
"Yes. I found out a few days before my wedding to your father that I was with egg, but you never came to see me."
"But how can you be sure?"
"Because I never slept with him, I couldn't, but then he forbid me from leaving the house and you never came by, I didn't get a chance to tell you."
"So you are saying you two never -"
"Salim, I wish I could say we never but he started forcing himself on me a couple of months ago. He wanted me to give him another son, he is planning on killing you and Gunter."
"Motherfucker!" Salim screamed.
"Then I can't let a rapist live, you understand that Salim?" I said.
"Yes, I can't let a rapist live either."
"That's not all, he was planning on trapping us here, but he never expected that there'd be so many of us," Julia declared. "He is communicating with King Lucifer, but he doesn't know where he is."
"What are you?" Mullins asked Julia. "I know those are werewolves, that one's a witch and the other in the leather jacket is a vampire. But you two - you two are different," his eyes travelled between Julia and Hazel.
"You'll never know," Julia answered. "If he doesn't die today, he'll cause a lot of damage and the snake-shifters will go extinct."
We all gasped.
Salim and I were busy orchestrating our plan. We would behead him and burn his body with Salim taking over for him. "What will I tell my people?"
"I don't know, but you'll come up with something," I told him.
"FUCK!" Thelma screamed and when we turned around SJ was wrapped around Mullins from behind with a dagger cutting into Mullins' throat. Blood sprayed as the young boy cut his head clean off his shoulders, then he threw it to the floor.
"Now that's a little warrior right there," Carson beamed. "Little man, you have my vote for president."
"Carson, this is not the time," I warned.
"SJ, why?" Thelma cried.
"He, he would beat me every day because he said I was weak like my father. I hated him, mommy. I hated him so much when he hit you, so I promised him that one day I would kill him."
"Come here my boy," the bloodied boy hurried to his mother's arms.
Thelma went on to tell us why she married Mullins. As the only offspring of Titus, it was her duty to rule, but she couldn't without a husband. So Mullins told her that her father made him promise to marry her if anything happened to him, which was another lie. All he wanted was power.
I accompanied Salim to burn Mullins' body.
"So I'll take you guys to the gate as soon as we are done here. I'll tell my people that Mullins attacked Thelma after he learned her child wasn't his, so I had to end him before he hurt them."
"Won't people protest?"
"No, most people hated that my father went on to marry Thelma even though he knew she was my mate - they'll understand. "
We went back to join the others.
"So snake-shifters are a thing," Hazel sighed. "but why do you guys only shift halfway?"
"I don't know. All I know is that we are the first shifters," Salim declared. "The Moon Goddess created this realm for us and then she abandoned us."
"It's true," Isis added. "The Moon Goddess created snake-shifters, but when they couldn't shift to blend with the humans, she got angry and cast them away here, then she tried again with the dragons, they too couldn't live on the earthly world so she placed them in a realm of their own, then she got it right with the wolves."
"Oh, wow, that's sad," Hazel said.
"Yeah, now let's get you guys on your way," Salim announced.
We followed him to the building across the road. We didn't go inside but we followed him around the back of the skyscraper.
"I have to ask, but what do you guys make in there?" Carson inquired.
"We raise rodents in there so that we don't go hungry."
"Makes sense," I laughed.
We stopped at a door, it was old and didn't fit with the rest of the building. There was some old dissertation on it. I tried to read it but the language was alien to me.
"We tried to read it for many years but no one seems to know what it says," Salim announced.
"Let me," Dimitri said. He traced a finger over the keyhole. "This is the royal Vampiric language, only my family can read it."
"Good, what does it say?" I was getting impatient.
"It says, To open, only the purest of the ancient blood can do so."
"That's it, but what does that mean?" There must have been more.
"The signs are all relics from our vampire kingdom - I think it means only pure vampire blood can open it."
"Ok, so aren't you a pure-blooded vampire?" I asked.
"Yes."
"So what are you waiting for? Open it."
Dimitri bit down on his index finger and smeared the blood over the lock, the door lit up and the bolts started to unlock. "It's working!" Dimitri screamed, but then the bolts reversed and locked once again. "What the fuck happened?"
"Maybe you aren't that special after all," I scoffed.
"I think I know," Isis declared. "I think we got it half right. Dimitri is from the ancient vampire bloodline, but he is not pure."
"Look witch, I may not be a saint but I am a pure-blooded vampire."
"But you're not a virgin," Isis grinned.
"Where the fuck will we find a virgin vampire?" Carson gasped. "Especially ones related to Dimitri over here."
"Does virgin vampires even exist?" Hazel questioned.
"I knew one once," I declared, while I stared at Dimitri.
"Yeah, who?" Hazel asked.
"My sister, Danika" Dimitri sighed.
