                    DECLAN'S POV
The agony was undeniable. Why had the Moon Goddess forsaken me?
I stood there getting punched in the face repeatedly, as Danika and Ushi were entangled in each other's arms.
It should have been me. I had been yearning for my mate for years, merely to discover she died as a newborn. You would have thought the Moon Goddess was finished with trampling my heart, but no, she had more plans for me when I later found out that my dead mate was a twin to my Luna, whom I can't stop thinking about sexually.
I deserved to go to hell for all the naughty, disturbing visions I was having of Hazel - fuck I would embrace death by Alpha's claws. Wouldn't that be poetic?
How long dear Moon Goddess must I suffer like this - how long?
I concluded that after I accompany Alpha and Luna to the Fae world, I would leave the Pack. It was unmistakable the Moon Goddess is torturing me.
I considered myself a strong wolf, but time had proved me mistaken with each moment my eyes beheld the Luna.
Her hair was the embodiment of beauty. My wolf and I wished we could play in it for all eternity. Her skin was the epitome of perfection; the shade reminded me of a glorious sunset, I couldn't begin to count the number of times I fantasised about kissing it, savouring her unique essence.
I knew she smelt like chocolates but because she isn't my mate I couldn't pick up on what the other unique component is.
Hazel's sister, who was supposed to be my mate must have smelled like chocolates too, that was the only legitimate explanation I could think of because my wolf was still hooked on Hazel's chocolate scent, and it was driving him to insanity. The poor fellow still believed Hazel was ours.
We were torn between our allegiance to Zander and our Love for Hazel.
"Dec, are you alright buddy?" Dimitri's friendly palm rested on my shoulder. He offered it a slight squeeze and when our eyes clashed, I knew he detected what I was thinking.
"Yeah," I cleaned my throat. "I'm fine, Dim. I just can't wait to get to the Fae world so I can leave all this heartache and chaos behind."
"Ah, Dec. I'm very sorry you're hurting. What can I do?"
"Can you find me, my second chance mate?" I laughed it off, but deep down my soul was weeping.
"I wish I could - you know I would do anything to make you feel better," Dimitri declared.
"I know my friend and I would do the same for you."
I perceived the others didn't understand my friendship with the vampire, but he was the only one who didn't make fun of my virgin situation, he was the only one who offered to help in that department - not that I required help getting women, in fact, I had shot down hundreds of she-wolves over the years. My parents raised me right; to wait for my mate. Now that I know she'd perished, it had me pondering, what was the point in waiting at all? She died the moment she entered the world.
All I know was the Moon Goddess is a cruel entity. She had me craving for a ghost for years.
I glared at the grin on Danika's face. She was no doubt one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, next to Hazel, of course. Wouldn't it be simpler if she was my mate?
Maybe the Moon Goddess enjoyed fucking with my head and my heart.
How much easier would it be if Danika was my mate, I mean her brother and I were best mates for heaven's sake.
Fuck the person who is writing my life's story.
Do they hate me this much?
I wish I could meet the person authoring my fucked up life, Maddox and I would go wild on their jugular. I smirked as I imagined their blood spilling over our fur as I slice into their neck and rip it to shreds.
But it was blasphemy to think such vile thoughts about the Moon Goddess.
"What are you smiling at?" Dimitri asked, then he followed my gaze to his sister. "Ah, I see. Wouldn't it have been more logical for her to be your mate?"
I rolled my eyes.
"Alpha, what's the next move?" I cruised up to him. His body stiffened when he heard my voice and I felt his dominance choking the daylight out of me. But who could blame him? I crossed the line with his mate, I would have murdered me a long time ago if I were him.
"We - wait - on Danika to - open the door."
Every word that tumbled from his mouth was strained. I could hear his teeth scraping against each other in his head.
Maybe I should back up a little.
"Ok sister, let's open this door," Dimitri announced.
"Yes - just let me take a better look at it." Danika glided over to the door, and she read the inscriptions. "To open, only the purest of the ancient blood can do so - hmm very intriguing, but there's something else written at the bottom."
"What? I saw nothing else," Dimitri scoffed.
"Well, brother, you aren't the most thorough of readers - no offence."
"You are right, sister, and I am a bit offended," he chuckled. "Now tell us what it says."
"Only eight may enter, but if there are more, then only eight may return."
"Can someone explain this, I've never been good at math," I said.
"It's a riddle and I think it's warning us of the consequences if more than eight persons cross the threshold then only eight can come back," Isis explained.
"So if all of us enter, only eight may return - so the others would be trapped in Serpents Valley forever," Alpha stated.
"I believe so," Isis nodded. "I assume Ushi will not accompany us now that he found his mate."
"He will stay with me, witch - we need to get to know each other," Danika answered and Carson whistled.
"Yeah, we know what that means," Dimitri winked at his sister. The poor vampire princess was redder than a tomato.
My best bro can be an asshole sometimes.
"So that leaves, me, Alpha, Luna, Dimitri, Carson, James, Isis and Julia," I spoke.
"Ok, since that's settled, let's crack this bitch open," Carson beamed.
We observed as Danika bit her palm open and smeared the blood over the four corners of the door. A yellow light emitted from the four walls and the unravelling of bolts echoed throughout the area. The door rattled and rocked until we heard a thundering blast.
The door exploded into tiny pieces. Shards of wood scattered everywhere.
"It worked," Dimitri said in astonishment.
"Of course it did - were you doubting my virtue, brother?"
"No - well, your powers of seduction are almost as strong as mine. How do you feed and not become super horny?" Dimitri asked.
"There's a thing called self-control, you should try it sometime," Danika smirked. "Now my work here is done, can I take my mate and leave now? I have a few days left before school starts and I need to enjoy the rest of my Christmas break."
Oh right, I forgot she's the Dean of admissions at The University of Toronto.
We bid them our goodbyes, and then we watched them take their leave into the Serpents Corp building.
"So, who's going in first?" Isis asked, but before anyone could answer, Hazel stepped through.
"LUNA!" Carson yelled, followed by Zander and Dimitri.
"What? You guys weren't stepping up, so someone had to."
As promptly as the eight of us wandered through the opening, the door started to rebuild itself.
"Be careful!" Salim warned as he offered us a safe journey. We lingered until the door was whole again before we ventured into Serpents Valley.
Zander took over, leading us as he walked cautiously at the front line, with Hazel behind him.
James and I remained at the back with Dimitri, Julia, Carson and Isis in the midst.
The atmosphere smelt like rotting fish guts and dried piss, the scent was scorching my throat leaving a vicious taste in my mouth.
The air was harsh - too dry and tedious. I barely detected oxygen. My head was already becoming light.
"There's a shortage of oxygen in this domain," Zander expressed.
Isis dug in her knapsack and she provided us with a drop of a special blend of plant oils which she claimed she got from her friend Ozone, a merman. "This should help us breathe like plants, so we won't require oxygen, but like every potion, I don't know how long it will last for werewolves. As for me, Hazel and Julia, it can last for at least 12 hours."
"Thank goodness I don't depend on oxygen to survive," Dimitri boasted.
We proceeded on the course. But where were we going? I didn't know.
I noticed the further we voyaged the thicker the forest got and the leaves on the trees were a gloomy shade of green, almost navy green.
Zander abruptly halted. We felt Gidian at the surface.
"Alpha, what is it?" Carson asked.
"Do you hear that?" Gidian questioned.
I listened, but I heard nothing.
"What are you talking about, I don't hear a thing," James reported.
"That's my point. Something is not right - it's too quiet," Gidian mumbled as he pulled Hazel to his arms. "Dimitri, hover overhead and advise us what you see - but be careful."
Dimitri's eyes flared crimson as he kicked his body off the drudgery. Gidian's eyes studied the pathway before him while I surveyed the back, Carson and the others were inspecting the area as well. We were alert.
Suddenly, a loud buzzing noise was heard. It was sharp and effective, but where did it come from?
"What was that?" Carson crouched while he sniffed the air. "The smell of piss is too strong, I can't detect anything else."
"I don't know Carson - Dimitri, what do you see up there?" Gidian called to him, but Dimitri didn't respond. Our heads tilted upwards. We needed to figure out what was behind the hold-up.
"Dimitri!" I shouted as I noticed a large spear impaled Dimitri's body to a tree truck above our heads. He placed a finger on his lips.
"Quiet - I think he wants us to stay quiet," Isis whispered.
Another sharp buzzing sound was heard, and then we caught another spear spiralling through the air like a bullet and then it pierced Dimitri's leg, the vampire flinched but he didn't utter a sound.
I grabbed Julia and pushed her in the middle as Zander, Carson, James and I made a circle around the three women.
We crouched. My wolf was ready to come out, but Alpha mind-link us to wait, which was the smartest thing to do.
"What should we do?" I asked through the pack-link.
The ground beneath our feet shook causing the trees to dance, it looked like they were waving at us.
"What the fuck is that?" Carson asked.
I didn't know why, but the others and I felt the need to protect the women.
A rumble of hooves hitting the ground was heard pummelling towards us. We tightened the circle around the women and that's when we heard Dimitri yell, "RUN!!!"
