                    ???'s POV
Dimitri tilted his head upwards, staring intensely at the tree. "Because this is not a tree."
Carson laughed, "What you mean this ain't a tree," he wrapped his legs and arms around the tree trunk in an attempt to climb it. The tree started to ooze a gooey substance, sticking Carson to its body.
"Carson, get the fuck down and come over here," Zander implored.
"Alpha, I'm trying, but I can't," Carson whined as his body wiggled trying to get free, but it was like his body was superglued to the tree.
Dimitri stepped towards Carson slowly, and he tried to yank Carson away, he was almost successful but then a branch-like arm wrapped around his body, lifting him towards the tree's face. He whimpered as the branch tightened around his torso.
Dimitri froze when the eyes shot open, unearthing yellow snake eyes. The pupils narrowed into slits and a long serpent's tongue stretched out and licked the side of Dimitri's face.
"A vampire in my midst," the tree spoke. "Why have you come here?"
The branch's hold on Dimitri made it difficult for him to speak. "We just want - safe passage to the Ghostly Plains. We mean no harm."
"The vampire is right, we just require safe passage, so if you could just point us to where Echidna is then we could be on our way," Declan added.
The tree lowered its eyes to meet the others on the ground. "You want to see Echidna?"
"Yes, we were told by the centaurs that—"
"ARGH!!!" The tree growled in anger, drowning out Zander's words. "Those conniving dirty half-breeds. Are you in alliance with them?" She asked the vampire.
"No, that's why we want to find Echidna, we just want to talk to her," Zander answered for Dimitri.
The tree sighed, then she lowered Dimitri to his feet. "Ok, I'm listening."
"Thank you, now we were told that Echidna ate the female centaurs a century ago and that she's a stone-cold killer," Zander explained.
"I bet that liar Gaylord told you this," she chuckled. "I did no such thing."
"Wait, are you Echidna?" Isis questioned. "But you don't look like what they say you'd look like."
"Well, I have been sleeping in a catatonic state for a century. My features seem stone like now, but the sap that my body is producing will soon get me to my once beautiful self again, it will take a few hours, but my trunk is my serpent's tail."
"And it's a beautiful tail, but I'd like to get down now," Carson begged. Echidna's branch-like arm pried Carson away then placed him on the ground. That's when Dimitri noticed that the arm was actually a small snake. Carson shivered when he saw the arm looking at him.
Echidna looked over her visitors and then her eyes froze scrutinising Julia then Hazel. "Who are you two?"
Zander snuggled Hazel under his arm, "This is my mate and wife Hazel and her aunt Julia."
"Hmm, they smell like demigods, but not quite."
"Well they are not," Zander said.
"I see, and you are an Alpha wolf, but your scent is also very powerful. What's your name?"
"I'm Zander and this is James, Declan, Carson, Dimitri and Isis."
"Nice to meet you all, but I know Isis, I've met her 400 years ago."
"Really? I don't remember you," Isis said matter-of-factly.
"You wouldn't, I wasn't in this form. Maybe you'd remember Lenora Rimes."
Isis blushed. "Wait! Nora? You were Nora?"
"Yes, and we had some steamy nights in Arabia back then," Echidna giggled and Isis cleared her throat when she noticed the others looking at her.
"Yes, well I was young back then," she smoothed her hair. "Anyway, if what those centaurs said isn't true, what happened?"
"A few centuries ago after my lover betrayed me for a much more beautiful female and forced me to eat my children, I got mad. I went on a rampage and I started to eat beautiful women and children - wasn't a great time in my life. I got tired after a century or so and that's when she found me and gave me a purpose."
"Who found you?" Isis asked.
"The Moon Goddess, Selene. She told me she had a job for me and that I had a destiny to fulfil. My world lit up once again as my life had meaning and a purpose. She told me I should guard this entrance and that one day a group of special creatures would ask for safe passage and that I should only grant it to them. So I sat and waited. After a century, the centaurs moved here, I don't know where they came from or who put them here, but the males were barbaric, and they would rape their females and brutally kill them until I intervene. I started to teach them how to value themselves and how to say no to their male counterparts when they weren't feeling comfortable with their advances. The males got angry when the females began to become more independent, and they killed them all."
"Wait, so the males killed the females?" Carson asked.
"Yes. They slaughtered them, then they had sex with their corpses until their flesh rotted away. Then, when the corpses were no more and their sexual needs began to elevate, with no females around they turned to me. Many of them tried to mount me, but I am too strong, I killed most of them. Accepting defeat, they moved to the farthest side of Serpents Valley, and then they killed all the animals here that I feasted on, so I got weak and fell into hibernation."
"So you only eat animals now?" Zander spoke.
"Yes. Since the Moon Goddess place me here, I've only eaten animals."
The others were appalled by the Centaurs lies. Zander promised her that he will come back to kill them, but she told him no, she would take care of them herself.
Isis felt bad, she summoned thousands of animals, so that she could have her meals again.
"Thank you, Isis."
"Let's just say, thank you for Arabia," Isis winked.
Echidna moved to reveal a cave between her legs, the entrance to the Ghostly Plains. Just as they were about to enter a spear came spiralling through the air, Echidna was quick to deflect it.
A few centaurs were galloping towards them. Zander searched for Gaylord but he wasn't there.
"Go! I'll take care of them," Echidna warned. Then she pointed her head and stared at the ground summoning the stream once more. The nine centaurs galloped into the stream of nothingness, falling to their deaths into the abyss. The others watched in awe. "I said GO!" She boomed.
Carson entered the cave first followed by the others.
"Thank you Echidna," Zander bowed.
"No problem and Alpha something tells me we'll meet again," she added as she watched them disappear into the cave.
