                    ???'s POV
"Zander," Hazel barely whispered as she felt his left arm tighten around her waist. He had his eyes closed, grinding his teeth while he folded his right palm into a fist.
She saw flashes of his parent's death, but she couldn't detect any guilt from him.
Something wasn't right.
She felt his confusion, but he didn't respond. He had a weary look on his face.
"Alpha, they're closing in," Declan recited. He pressed his back up against James' who still had an unconscious Julia in his arms.
Isis was busy chanting and humming in the centre while Dimitri and Carson guarded her sides.
"Hurry up, old crone," Dimitri ordered as the apparitions drew closer.
"Shut up and let her do her thing," Carson growled. "Just make sure they don't touch her."
Isis' body began to convulse. The spirits drew closer.
It was taking all their might to stay afloat, huddled in the one spot.
"It's not working," Isis finally let out.
"Then try again," Carson told her. “Just try it again!”
"As I said, little boy, my spell is not working. Someone tampered with the energy here, but I can't tell who or why they'd do that."
"Isis, none of this is making sense," Hazel yelled. "So you're saying we're just gonna let a bunch of ghosts kill us?"
"That's the thing, deary, the spirits in the Ghostly Plains are not supposed to touch or harm you physically. They torment you, feed on your guilt until you go mad and eventually take your own life," Isis explained.
"Shit!" Hazel sighed.
"But Isis that's not the case here, Cory grabbed my hand," Zander finally spoke.
"I can't explain how he was able to do that, so we have to get out of here." Isis sounded hopeless. "There should be a passage to Dead Man's Cave somewhere in all this madness."
"I, for one, feel no guilt or regret over my kills," Dimitri pondered out loud. "So why am I seeing the ghosts of my victims?"
"They must blame you for their deaths then," Isis replied.
"This would make sense, but why am I seeing her," Dimitri pointed towards the ghost of a young woman he knew back in the 80s. He broke formation and floated towards the pretty apparition. "Betty Young, I remember you."
The others watched as Dimitri floated ahead. No one else could see this woman but him.
"And I remember you, my friend." Her frail voice cackled eerily, sending strange vibrations down Dimitri's eardrums. Dimitri paused, and he stared at the ghost with a crooked smile.
"You are not the Ghost of Betty," Dimitri spoke with a hint of intrigue in his voice.
"Yes I am, you killed me on Christmas Eve night, 1989 after you fed on my husband."
"That is not at all accurate. You can't be Betty. You may look exactly like her, but you are forgetting a few major details," Dimitri laughed out.
"And what are those?" The ghost asked, but before Dimitri could answer, Declan and the others floated closer to the vampire. The other spirits halted as they settled behind ghost Betty.
"Dim, what is going on?" Declan questioned.
"You see, Dec. Betty's parents forced her to get married to a man three times her age. Her husband was an abusive asshole, he would beat her bloody every night before he entered her. One night I saw her on top of the twenty-floor building she lived, she was about to jump when I saved her. We became close friends after that, but she still tried to kill herself on numerous occasions. I asked her why she wanted to die, but she never gave me an answer, bear in mind I never knew her husband was being abusive at the time. She hid it so well, plus in the 80s I was so high on cocaine, it interfered with my abilities."
"Damn Dim," Declan shook his head.
"The 80s is a blur for me. But I remember every detail of my time with Betty. Enough to know that the thing here prancing around pretending to be her ghost is not her."
"But it's me, Dimitri. You drained my blood, and then you broke my neck and buried me."
Dimitri cringed as he remembered that he did that. "Yes, for some reason you can access images from my memories, but as I said you are forgetting two major details. For one, Betty was a mute, we communicated using sign language and two, I didn't kill her, I turned her."
The apparition drifted back a bit, her face morphed into a scowl. "Stupid vampire," she spat.
"If this isn't Betty's ghost. I guarantee you guys that none of these apparitions you are seeing is real," Dimitri informed the others.
One by one, the apparitions began to vanish, leaving Cory and Betty hovering before them.
A strange flash of light was seen.
"Dolos, what are you doing?" Betty yelled as she turned to speak to Cory.
"Hush it Apate, we've been made," Cory grumbled.
Isis grabbed a hold of Dimitri's shoulder and pulled herself ahead of him. She stared at the man in front of her. Blue skin, lifeless almond-shaped eyes. He was standing around 7ft tall. He was a rather thin-looking man, with a bald spot on his head. "Of course, you are Dolos, God of Thievery and sometimes known as a trickster."
"You caught me," Dolos bowed.
Isis' eyes then settled on the woman, who had very pale skin and the most beautiful red locks she had ever seen. Her white marble eyes and doll-like features made her a stunning sight. "That makes you Apate, Goddess of deceit. But what are two such powerful beings doing here in the Ghostly Plains?"
Isis finally figured out why her spell wasn't working. It was too weak against Gods.
"Call it boredom. We stumbled on this place a few centuries ago, and we've been hanging out here ever since," Apate explained.
