ZANDER'S POV
The information that was spewing from this bloodsucker's mouth was beyond outrageous.
"You are her mate. You were supposed to protect her, you motherfucker! I should have never allowed her to leave with you!" I slammed my fists down hard on my desk, the echo vibrating through the thick mahogany like a cannon blast. Papers flew, and my pen holder toppled over, scattering its contents across the floor.
Dimitri gave me an incredulous look. That asshole seemed so calculated and composed. He had his legs crossed, one hand on the armrest and the other clutching his chin like some arrogant philosopher. His icy dead eyes could send chills up a snowman's spine. His creepy grin told me he was almost amused by my rage.
"Look, Zander," he practically choked as he spoke my name, as if it burned on his undead tongue. "I had merely come here because the note I obtained from Zoey had your name written on it. I am just here on these lands to pass on that insignificant detail out of respect for my mate."
How dare he refer to my sister as his mate? Yes, he is her mate, but a vampire is not the most loyal of supernatural creatures. They cheat, scheme, and lie. They don't know how to be faithful to one partner. Their love is not rooted in instinct like ours. It's cultivated, synthetic, and often poisoned by time.
"You dirty undead piece of shit! How many people have you fucked since you thought my sister died? Huh? How many? I bet they're in the hundreds. I never want you to refer to her as your mate, ever again. YOU GOT THAT, BLOODSUCKER!" I was spiralling out of control. My hands trembled, and the veins in my neck pulsed like angry ropes. I needed to calm down, and I needed to do so quickly.
'Kitten, I need you,' I reached out through the mind-link, gripping the mental thread between us like a lifeline.
'Zander! What's wrong?' she sounded like she had just woken up. The melody of her voice was already soothing me. Like warm honey poured into my veins, the sound calmed the raging beast. Gidian was purring in my head, his ears twitching at the sound of her concern.
'Nothing, Kitten, I just needed to hear your voice,' I sighed, exhaling tension I didn't realize I was still carrying.
'I can feel your anger, Zander. Don't lie to me. Where are you right now?'
Shit! This damn cosmic bond was a blessing, but it could also be a curse. Now it was going to be difficult keeping things from her. She could practically smell my emotions. 'Ah, I'm in the study, conducting a meeting with Dimitri.'
'I'll be there in five minutes.'
'Kitten, you don't have to do that. Kitten? ...Kitten?'
"HAZEL? — SHIT," I said out loud, slamming my palm to my forehead in frustration.
"Trouble with the misses?" Dimitri cocked an eyebrow at me, his lips twitching into something too smug for my liking.
"That's none of your fucking business, BLOODSUCKER!"
"You're such an irritable man—or is it just a wolf thing?" he stated, shifting in his seat as though he were adjusting his throne. His tone was light, but his eyes held that condescending gleam that made me want to rip his throat out.
This fucker was analyzing me, and I hated it. Every movement of mine was being cataloged by that corpse brain of his. It made my skin crawl.
"So... is fucking on your mate a vampire thing?" I fired back, my voice sharp like a blade freshly drawn from its sheath.
He grunted, and his eyes went blood-red in an instant. His fangs lengthened slightly, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. "I will have you know, POOCH, that I have never cheated on Zoey..." he snarled through clenched teeth. Then, just as quickly, his eyes returned to brown, and he relaxed in the chair. He even had the audacity to smirk.
"Well, if you count snogging as cheating... then I am bloody guilty of that," he uncrossed his legs and snickered, like this was some twisted comedy show and I was his audience.
What the fuck did he mean by snogging?
"Fuck! I don't own a manual on British lingo! What the hell did you mean by that?" I snapped, my arms folding tightly across my chest.
He scrutinized me some more. His face had a jaded expression, one that looked like he'd seen far too many centuries to care about my frustration. "Let's just move on to a more pressing matter, shall we?" He waved me off like I was a common housefly, not an Alpha of a dominant pack.
I could feel Hazel's pulse pounding in her chest. She was near, and she was so nervous about something. I could tell she was fidgeting with her fingers. Her temperature was rising steadily. The waves of unease she radiated were starting to make Gidian and me crazy. It was like my wolf wanted to bolt down the hallway just to make sure she was okay.
The door creaked softly as she entered, and I didn't even need to look. I could smell her before she stepped in. That sweet, intoxicating scent that grounded me and drove me insane all at once. She walked in slowly, her steps hesitant, eyes darting between Dimitri and me.
Hazel was wearing an oversized shirt that she clearly yanked on in a hurry. Her hair was tousled, sleep still clinging to her features, but her eyes were fully awake.
She quickly scampered over to me and placed a wet, hot kiss on my lips.
'Hmm, I love this,' Gidian purred in my head.
She tasted so good that it should be a sin.
I grabbed her and dragged her down on my lap where she belonged. Her presence alone was enough to calm me, but her skin brushing against mine was driving my wolf and me insane.
My cock was also excited to see her. I wish I could shove her head through the window while I fuck her little pussy from behind.
"Kitten, you didn't have to come all the way down here," I ran a finger over the side of her face.
"I know, but I wanted to make sure you were alright. I felt your anger. It woke me up seconds before you mind-linked me," she explained.
My eyes glowed as my wolf took a long look at her.
'Isn't she beautiful?' he asked.
'She is. She is the most beautiful thing in this world.'
