                    ZANDER'S POV
"Zander! Let him go," Hazel yelled. I felt her tiny fingers working as a tool to wrench my claws from around Lance's neck.
"Do you take me for a fool, ghoul?" Gidian bellowed, ignoring the pleas of our wife.
The rotten corpse struggled against my hold, but the more he struggled, pieces of his body kept falling to the ground.
It tried talking, but my tight grip didn't allow him to.
"That's enough!" Isis boomed.
I felt my heart rate slowing rapidly and my anger subsiding with it. "Isis, Declan just mind-linked me and told me that Major Skully is with them," I seethed. "So I think this one here might be leading us into a trap." I released my grip on Lance, sending the rest of him falling to the ground.
I was angry as I explained to the others what Declan revealed to me.
Hazel placed a hand on mine for comfort. "Let's hear him out before we make such accusations," she told me. But I was tired of this journey. I just wanted to get to the Fae world and get my mate's powers under control. I didn't have time for another creature to betray us.
"Hazel is right, Zander," Isis spoke. "Let us at least hear what Lance has to say."
I finally calmed down, I knew Isis was also using her powers to help with my anger, but I didn't say anything. I needed a level head if I'm to listen to Lance. Even though I was truthful to my friends, I omitted the fact that Skully is apparently a soldier for King Lucifer. I didn't trust Lance with that information.
We waited for him to screw himself back together.
Gidian was pacing around in my head, ready to pounce if he smelled a lie.
"Will you hurry up! It can't be that hard to screw your dick on!" Gidian howled impatiently.
"Forgive me, Alpha," Lance finally spoke as he secured his left hand in place. "But please, believe me, I didn't know that Major Skully was in town and not his mansion."
"Why should we believe you?" Isis asked.
I took a whiff of the air around him and I detected his honesty.
"I believe him."
Thank the Moon Goddess for that, at least I know Lance is true to his word.
"Me too," Julia added. "The ghoul speaks the truth, I sense it."
"OK, so what should we do?" James asked.
"I don't understand. Why hasn't anyone told me this?" Lance wondered. "This has always been my destiny, to lead the chosen one inside the gates of Dead Man's Cave and then to its leader, so they can continue their journey to save the world."
"Don't get discouraged deary, your destiny, and purpose still calls," Isis assured Lance, who now had a small smile of relief on his face.
"Plus, this town is filled with undead creatures, who are selfish and tricky. I doubt that they really give a damn to inform you of Major Skully's whereabouts." James informed.
Lance sighed.
"Well, I think we are on the right path. Let's move forward and go to the mansion still." Julia suggested, and I agreed.
‘You should apologize to Lance.’ Hazel's voice came booming in my head.
I ignored her, then she nudged me with her elbow and stayed back to take a hold of her father's hand.
She was so cute when she was mad at me, but I couldn't think of such things now, I had a skull man to kill.
We travelled for what seemed like forever until we finally came to a steep path.
I led the way toward huge gates and I pushed them open, the iron bars were as cold as ice.
My feet made it through and even though I could feel the unevenness of the old cobbled path beneath me, they were smooth in contrast to the crunching of the odd dead leaves that I stepped on.
I quickly mind-linked Declan and Carson, asking them how far away they are from the mansion. It was odd that I couldn't sense Carson, but Declan informed me he was twelve minutes away.
Is Carson giving me space because he knows I'm mad at him? I wondered to myself.
'Carson...,' Gidian chuckled. 'That pup doesn't know how to tie his fucking shoelaces, much less do something as difficult as giving us space.'
'So what are you saying, Gidian?'
'I'm saying that something is wrong. That wolf is in some sort of trouble —again.'
'Shit! I think you're right, but why hasn't Declan said anything to us?'
'Maddox is a proud wolf, he's probably convinced Declan that they could fix whatever it is on their own.'
I thought about what my wolf said, and he was absolutely right.
I uttered a small prayer to the Moon Goddess, begging her to watch over them, even the bloodsucker. I will need every last one of them from the fight that I know is coming.
I took a deep breath as we prepared for whatever it is up ahead.
The grass carried on forever into the horizon, a monotonous grey colour, as if it had renounced the will to live and stopped growing altogether.
"Are we sure we're gonna find anyone up here?" James questioned as he manoeuvred himself through the thick bushes.
"Honestly, I am not certain," Lance uttered as he tried to figure out why the mansion looked abandoned. "The grass is grown, that's weird."
"Why is that weird?" I asked.
"Because growth signifies life and nothing should be alive in Dead Man's Cave," Lance explained. "Only maggots are allowed because they help in the rotting of corpses."
Suddenly, it hit me, there wasn't much decay in the air as before.
My eyes zoned in on a lonesome Oak tree. It stood by the house swaying in the breeze and as the wind swept by the tree whispered to the air and its surroundings.
The whistling of the wind echoed around the vastness, creating an even more eerie atmosphere.
Julia dipped when a couple of owls fluttered overhead. Their silhouettes cast enormous monstrosities over the grass as they passed by.
What were owls doing in Dead Man's Cave?
And by the look on Lance's face, he was wondering the same.
