                    ZANDER'S POV
We were as quiet as we could be as we followed ghost Carson up the stairs.
No one dared make a sound. Even our breathing was kept under control and could barely be heard as we made our way to the second floor.
We swerved and swivelled along winded passageways and twisted staircases that seemed to be never-ending.
Where is he leading us? I asked myself.
The ghost stopped ahead, so we did the same.
We waited, and then my ears picked up on scratching sounds coming from one of the many rooms lining the massive corridor we were now in.
Carson pointed. "The child's in the room at the far end. Now listen, she is going to ask one of the men a question. I don't know what the question will be, but the answer should be yes."
The scratching noises intensified as we travelled down the hallway. Old torches lit the way as we quietly trekked one foot at a time.
The scraping noises got louder and more pronounced. "What is that sound?" Isis asked.
"Just be quiet, we don't want to disturb her," Carson shushed us.
A strange breeze rushed across the hallway killing the torchlights, then from the pools of blackness left in the wake of the snuffed-out torches, emerged a long, wavy thing. Isis held my hand and squeezed it, and I huffed. My eyes blinked rapidly when a second phantom followed. They whipped about, as if they were some massive antennae, trying to find a signal. "It's Ok. They are just ghost children playing," Carson whispered.
"The mansion looks different," Lance uttered as he ran his fingers over the oozing walls. Something like puss or sap was leaking from the creases.
The sound of someone weeping in the distance caught our attention. So we backed against the stone wall lined with old photographs and paused, calculating if we should go on ahead.
Carson seemed to have vanished, and
the scraping sound stopped.
We held our breaths and Isis held my hand tighter. "All of you, stay still and keep quiet."
The next thing I heard was the soft padding of unshod feet on the floor. My eyes adjusted to the surroundings and from the darkness emerged a woman, but not like any woman I had ever seen. She was heavily clothed, her hair long and ragged, plus her hands were very white.
Even though her pupils were beady and black like those of a crab, her eyes seemed red and puffy, like she had been crying. They conveyed almost a sad expression. I felt no warmth from her and, in fact, looking at her, my dread only increased. Before she could reach me or open her mouth, Carson reappeared.
"For nature's sake, Carson, what is going on?" The woman asked, then in a poof, the torches once again had a fire in them. She didn't seem angry, but she seemed sad and a bit troubled. Dried tear streaks stained her face. She had a beautiful face, and even though she was pale there was a glimmer of silver beneath her skin.
"I was just helping these nice people," Carson told her.
I stepped out of the shadows first and into the light, then James and Julia followed next. None of us said a word. Our eyes were too busy examining this tall creature.
The woman glanced over at us. Her ghastly complexion looked even paler under the dim-lit light. Her long streaming hair was floating about, even though there wasn't any breeze. It was like gravity didn't affect it. Her grey cloak was tattered and dusty, as it did a terrible job of hiding the green dress beneath.
"You know women are not allowed in this house." The woman scowled.
"I know, but I was just trying to –"
"Enough Carson!" The woman screeched, her tone almost deafening as my palms went up to protect my ears. "I know what you were trying to do—but now they have to leave."
Carson's voice dropped an octave. "She needs to leave this place and be with living people."
The woman screeched, and her stature seemed to grow taller before our eyes. "She is my daughter!"
'Should we intervene?'
'No Gidian. This creature is very powerful, can't you feel it?'
'Yes. But what is she?'
'I don't know. Let's just see how this plays out.'
"Who are you?" Lance stepped from the shadows. The woman looked down at him.
"Who dare ask me such a question?"
"It is I, Lance, and I am the gatekeeper. We are seeking passage to the Dragon Flame Summit."
I whispered to Julia, asking her if she could get a reading, but she informed me all she felt was pain and heartache.
"Well, Lance, you've come to the right place, but the passageway has been closed for almost ten years." The woman spoke.
"I see," Lance stated. "Forgive me, but I happen to know every undead creature in Dead Man's Cave, but your face is new to me. Who are you?"
The woman cackled. "I am the leader of this town. My name is Cedella."
"What happened to Major Skully?" Lance questioned, holding eye contact with the strange woman.
"We don't speak that name here!" Cedella hissed. "However, he was incompetent, so I took over."
"How did you manage to do that? He isn't one who gives up power freely." Lance drilled some more.
"Let's just say I beat him at his own game." Cedella grinned.
I picked up on the hushed tones of Hazel and Isis. It sounded like they were arguing.
'Kitten, is everything OK?' I asked through the mind-link.
'No. Isis is being stupid. She wants to go meet the others at the door. She says they've arrived.'
'Shit! Why do I sense you want to go with her?'
'Because I want to ensure she is OK. She has been acting strange since we got to this town!' Hazel admitted.
'OK, Kitten. But be careful. I love you.'
'I love you too. And I promise I will shout through the link the first sign of trouble.'
'Good girl.' I praised before I closed the link.
Lance kept the attention of Cedella while Hazel and Isis slipped down the steps we came.
"Please Cedella. Just let them meet her—they are the saviours." Carson was now a part of Lance's and Cedella's conversation.
"Is this true? Are you the ones I've been waiting for?" Cedella walked over to us. Her eyes fixed on me for a long time before they roamed over to Julia and James.
"I am Alpha Zander Knight. This is Julia Campbell and James Valentine."
Cedella paused for a beat, then she spoke. "You are Alpha Zachery Knight's son. The last time I saw you, you were just a pup."
"You know me?"
