ZANDER'S POV
"Well, I knew your father, he used to visit my mother back in the day. They were wonderful friends."
"Your mother and my father were friends?" I cocked a brow at her. "Is your mother here too?" I asked, finding it hard to believe that my father would have been friends with such a creature.
"Unfortunately, no. I haven't seen my mother in over a decade." Cedella seemed saddened by that fact.
"I'm sorry. But please, we need to get to Queen Magdalena. The world is depending on us to save it."
Cedella tensed at the mention of the Queen, but she shook it off and contemplated for a moment. "Fine. But to get to the Dragon Flame Summit, you need to journey south. There is a passageway beneath this house that has underpasses that leads to The River of Souls. If you survive the River of Souls, then you will enter the Summit, but I must warn you, the Dragon King hasn't allowed anyone safe passage to the Fae World in centuries." Cedella warned.
"We will handle that problem when we get there, just show us to the tunnels, and we'll be on our way," I explained to her.
"Very well. Follow me," she suggested as she glided down the hallway. I decided to check in on Kitten. 'Hazel, are you guys OK?'
I knew she heard me, but she hesitated to answer. 'Well, yes, everyone is alive if that's what you meant.'
'You sound strange. What's wrong? Did something happen to the guys?'
'Just wait and see—I don't know how to explain the situation to you.' That was the last thing Hazel said before she turned off her mind-link. Gidian was worried. He could tell something was wrong with Carson after he tried reaching out to Jinx but couldn't sense him.
The floorboard creaked as Lance, Julie, James, and I came to a halt behind Cedella and Carson. Cedella stopped at a pink double door with crystal handles. She inhaled, then exhaled. "This is my daughter's room," she whispered, her eyes getting teary as she continued. "The passage to the tunnels is in her bedroom," she sniffled.
"It's OK Cedella, this is the best thing for her," Carson told her.
The rest of us wondered what that was about.
"I know." Cedella dried her eyes. "Zander, my daughter loves riddles, board games, and sweets. She will test one of you before permitting entry into the tunnels."
"Why is that? Can't you show us the entrance?" I just couldn't understand.
"When the bone man was ruler, he had Hell Hounds guarding the entrance. I tried getting rid of them when I took over, but my daughter took a liking to them. Now they are her pets and they only listen to her commands. So if you gain her trust, she will order the hounds not to harm you and give you safe entrance to the tunnels."
"Oh dear, Moon Goddess!" I sighed. "OK, let's get this show on the road."
HAZEL'S POV
"What the fuck happened?" I screeched after Declan showed me the Slug and the Bat, telling me they were Carson and Dimitri. "Zander is gonna blow a gasket. Declan, you were supposed to keep an eye on them."
"To be fair, cousin, this is not Dec's fault," the bat thingy spoke. It sounded like Dimitri if he was a chipmunk.
"Don't you fucking start, Dimitri!" I warned, then I turned my scorching blaze on the slimy slug. "And you, don't you dare open that mouth of yours." I shook my finger at Carson.
"We're sorry Lun-Lun," Carson stated. I snarled at him. "You look so scary right now. If I had hands, I would run my fingers over my lips to show you I am gonna zip them from now on," Carson winked.
"Declan, what do you have to say?"
"I apologize, Luna," Declan held his head down.
"Don't apologize, just tell us how to fix this," I seethed. "Isis, you can fix this, can't you?"
Isis poked the slug on its face, then she stretched the wings of the bat. "It's a weak spell at that, so it's an easy fix, but the ingredients for the potion, now that's where the trouble comes in."
"Ingredients? Like the flower from Africa and your urine? OK, we can do that," I babbled. I was anxious. We couldn't afford detours right now.
"I'm afraid deary, it won't be as simple as me spitting and pissing in a bowl this time. We'll need the eye of a –"
Isis was cut off by a cloaked figure I almost forgot was with us. "Eye of a Zombie, the teeth of a Banshee, virgin's blood, and the flame of a dragon." the bone man grinned. "I'm Major Skully, at your service madam," he took his top hat off and bowed.
"I'm Hazel and this is–"
"Irena," he whispered as he took in Isis' appearance. "Well, I know Irena is dead, but you look so much like her."
Isis didn't answer him.
"Her name is Isis," I answered for her.
"It's lovely to meet you, Isis." Major Skully smiled.
There was an awkward pause.
"Let's just go find the others," I snapped.
"Wait! Have you guys met her as yet?" Skully inquired.
"Who?" I asked.
"Cedella the Banshee. She captured me and took over my town." Skully raged. "When I get my bones on her, I'm gonna— well make her wish she was dead dead."
"So she's a banshee," Isis spoke. "I've never faced a banshee before, so I was dumbfounded by her powerful aura."
"A banshee is a very powerful being. They are the harbinger of coming doom to her mortal kindred. The ones in the human world hover in the moonlight, lamenting with veiled faces because if a human sees a Banshee's eyes they weep bitterly until they die. The cry of this spirit is mournful beyond all other sounds on earth and betokens certain death to people whenever it is heard in the silence of the night." Skully's explanation sent chills up my spine. But something told me that there was more to the story that he was hiding.
Zander mind-linked me, but I was just too tired to explain this to him. He sounded distressed.
My poor husband, I shook my head.
"Let's just go to the others," I sighed. "Isis, you lead the way," I ordered. I shoved Skully behind Isis, there was no way I would let him out of my sight. "Declan and I will follow behind."
'I really am sorry, Hazel,' I heard Declan's voice through the mind-link.
'I know.'
