HAZEL'S POV
Major Skully used his strength to snap his hand from Declan. With a loud crack, his shoulder pulled from its socket, leaving Skully with one arm. Skully yanked his scythe from Declan, who was busy looking at the torn hand in his grasp.
The Major lifted the scythe and pointed it at us. Zander and Isis stood at the forefront.
"You think I wanted to hurt you or your daughter, Cedella?" Skully hissed. Zander was looking for an opening to attack. "I love you and Tia, but I just love power more and King Lucifer had promised me that if I deliver the Dark Fae to him, then he will gift me the power of a God, that's all I've ever wanted. Power." He sounded like a madman as he lifted the scythe higher, the tip of the cane had a ruby on it, emitting a red light.
"No," Cedella whispered as her eyes landed on the ruby. "Lucifer will kill her, please don't bring him here."
Isis' eyes went white as she tried to use her powers to stop Skully from opening a portal for Lucifer.
Zander tried to attack him, but the force field around him sent Zander slamming into the wall.
"Hecate forged this scythe herself, and the ruby is a blessed stone from the fairy realm. It will take more than that to stop me, demon wolf," Skully cackled. He waved the stick, cutting a straight line down the middle of the air, and a door formed.
My eyes adjusted to the light. The door swung open, and a man was standing in the frame. He smirked at us, but before he could step through, the scythe fell from Skully's hands and the portal door vanished.
"What happened?" I demanded.
"Are you OK, mommy?"
We turned around to see a little girl, chewing on some gummy bears with two leashes in her arms. Two dogs barked and grunted but they were invisible to our eyes. The child's skin was light blue and her ears were pointed and cute. Her dark hair had streaks of blue and shimmer in it.
"Yes, I am Tia. But didn't I tell you not to leave this room without my saying?" Cedella asked the child. Her dark eyes and shimmery hair glistened with beauty as she smirked playfully at her mother.
"Yes, but I wanted to know what was all the commotion about. Who are these people?"
"They are my friends," Cedella spoke.
"But not him," she gestured to Skully. "He was trying to hurt you, mommy."
"Yes, he was."
"Sic him, boys!" the child bellowed, and the leashes fell from her hand. I could see two sets of glowing red eyes stalking Skully who was struggling to crawl away on his ass. He was terrified, not only of the invisible dogs but the child.
The menacing barks could be heard as we watch dog slime dripping on the bone man's face.
He screamed then we saw his legs being pulled from his body. The bones cracked and crunched until they disappeared into the bellies of the invisible dogs.
"Are they eating him?" Zander asked.
"Yes," Isis gulped.
Skully attempted to free himself, but the dogs were too strong and without his scythe, he was just a helpless bone man.
The dogs chomped and chomped until all that was left was his skull. "I will be back!" he cried.
"No, you won't!" Cedella declared as we watched his skull crushed and swallowed by the invisible dogs.
I felt hot breath on my face, then a large blob of dog saliva dripped on top of my head.
"Bulldozer and Mongrel, down boys!" the child shouted. But then I felt two warm dog tongues on the sides of my face.
"Eww!" I scrunched up my nose.
"My hellhounds like you, miss," the child giggled.
"I like them too," I giggled as I noticed one of them pushing their head under my palm.
"Mongrel wants you to pet him."
I rubbed his head and he purred, "Good boy, Mongrel," I cooed.
"So, Skully is dead," Declan let out. "I'm glad. He was a wicked bastard."
"Yes, but we must destroy his phylactery. It's an item that a Lich uses to store their life force." Cedella explained. "Skully was a cleric mage, so for him to become a Lich he had to forge a phylactery."
"Yes, it is necessary for a Lich to maintain its undead state and escape being destroyed." Isis added.
"We have to find it before the hounds pass their next faeces," Cedella said.
"So he can reanimate?" I asked.
"Yes, but not if we destroy his phylactery," Cedella answered.
"I think this is it," Declan announced as he picked up his scythe.
"Yes. Why didn't I consider that?" Cedella said as she took the stick. She removed the ruby first. "This is my portal ruby. Take this to my mother," she handed it to me. "Tell her I'm sorry and that I apologize for everything."
Cedella used all her strength to break the scythe in two, but nothing happened. She flipped it around until she noticed the inside was hallowed. There was a piece of paper rolled and tucked away inside. She pulled it out and something small hit the ground. The sheet seemed never ending as it unfolded and flowed to the floor. Hundreds, if not thousands, upon thousands of names were written on it.
"Are these all the names of Skully's victims?" I gasped.
Declan's eyes scanned over the document while his fingers traced along the list until they stopped at one name, Nancy Harlow. "Yes, it is," he grumbled. I wondered who this Nancy was to him. Declan stepped on something on the ground, and he stooped and picked it up. It was another stone, it was what fell from the inside of the scythe. It was dark and had a very inky mist to it. "I think I've found the phylactery." he held the black stone, so everyone could see it.
Declan placed it on the floor again and lifted his foot to crush it with his booth.
With all his might, he stepped on the stone, crunching it beneath his shoes.
The deafening sounds of thunder sounded off, startling most of us. The child held on to her mother.
A look of worry laced Lance's face. "There has never been thunder here before."
Another wave of thunder rolled across the sky, and we could see the flicker of lightning flashing inside the walls of the mansion.
We all stayed quiet until we heard it. The drizzle of rain over the roof of the house.
"I bet it had never rained here either," I announced.
"No, never," Lance whispered as he made his way downstairs.
Curiosity coursed through all of us as we followed the ghoul outside.
