???'s POV
"You know King Lucifer?" Zander asked as he woke up.
"I've met him once, and he's no King."
"It sounds like you despise him." Zander pointed out.
"We didn't get along too well the time we met," Charon paused. "There is one thing you should know, Alpha Zander. Lucifer is not the one in charge."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, he works for a powerful being. I cannot say any more. This is above my pay grade."
Zander didn't push any further. He thought about what Charon said and he made it a point of duty to find out who he worked for once they get to the Fae world.
Charon paddled for a few more minutes. "We're here," he announced.
He jumped into the river and pushed the boat the remaining way until it was on the riverbank.
Zander exited the boat.
"Ash," Zander declared, as he used his fingers to pick up some dirt.
"Yes. We are at the entrance of the dragon world." Charon hummed.
Isis woke up the others, and they all piled out of the boat.
"Take care of each other," Charon said as he removed the coffin from the craft. He sat it on the shore, then pushed the ship back into the river.
"Wait, is there anything we should know before we move ahead?" Zander asked.
Charon sighed. "There are only a handful of dragons left. They are not the friendliest shifters, but they won't harm you unless they feel threatened by you," Charon explained as he jumped into his vessel. "Another thing is, there hasn't been a new dragon hatched in hundreds of years. Since the last dragon King and Queen died, the mated dragons' eggs have been turned to stone. "
"That's so sad," Julia whimpered.
"The new dragon King has been searching for his queen for centuries, but he came up empty-handed. It is rumoured that he is an angry, hot-headed dragon who lives alone at the top of the summit. Until he finds his queen and mates with her, then the eggs will be hatched."
"OK, thanks for your help, Charon," Isis stated.
"Mummy, I'm hungry," Tia spoke and Charon's eyes flickered to her.
"The child," Charon let out. "She cannot go inside the dragon's abode."
"Why?" Cedella asked.
"You'll understand when you get there. See you guys, never," Charon bid as he rowed back the path he came.
"I can carry that the rest of the way," Isis announced as she used her magic and shrunk the coffin to a tiny size that could fit in her witch bag.
"And you telling us this now," Declan complained.
"Just shut up and follow us," Isis shook her head.
The more they walked away from the river, the brighter everything got.
Zander was the first to squeeze between two rocks and emerged into the dragon realm.
"It's so beautiful here," Gidian adored.
The others squeezed through the crack between the two realms, and soon they all stood at the entrance speechless as they marveled at the serenity of the place.
Zander inhaled, welcoming the crisp freshness of the untainted atmosphere. No scent of death, nor decay, nothing repugnant lingered in the surrounding air.
The forest was a pretty contrast of was oak-brown and it seemed so primitive. They were awed by the size and majesty of the trees. Their knotted arms rose ever upwards, as far as the head could lift. They were hoary fortresses and stood proudly. The orchestra of birdsong could be heard from miles away. It was spirit-refreshing to smell the musky mix of the forest's perfume.
"The air is so clean here," James declared. And Declan couldn't remember a time when he had enjoyed a cleaner supply of oxygen.
They walked through the umber-brown, ancient forest. It was like a leafy paradise, reeking of age. Its woody incense was from centuries of snapping branches crashing to the forest's floor and rotting silently. Every sprawling tree they passed under reminded them of a watchful guardian, a silent sentinel of the groves.
An ore-gold moon hung quietly in the distance, casting a honeyed sheen over the trees. The sap-sweet fragrance of the forest washed over them, and they were seduced by its comforting goodness.
"It's so beautiful and surreal here," Isis praised.
The trees all sported their greenest leaves, with no signs of wilt or dead plants. It all seemed too good to be true.
"Where are the dragons?" Carson wondered.
"We should travel some more," Dimitri made it known. "We can't be too far away."
They ventured deeper into the tangled heart of this primeval forest.
They hoped it would reveal its dark secrets to them.
The further they went, the more mystical and spellbinding it became.
They stumbled across massive roots that spread-eagled over the ground, twisting like the great backs of sea dinosaurs. The foliage came thicker and lusher, forming an arch of fairytale green above their heads.
Arthritic boughs dripped their bounty of nuts onto the path. Briars, brambles, and berry trees flanked the trail, making it impenetrable on either side.
"Are they safe to eat?" Declan asked Isis, so she picked some berries at ate them.
"Seems OK to me," Isis burped and Zander cursed under his breath. Soon the others were eating from the trees as well.
Shuffling noises came from deep in the interior, deadened by the cunningly woven web of leaves. They were in a wide glade, where the trees fell away, revealing the bespeckled sky. The last of the night's stars were glinting like silver pinpricks, luminous and bright.
The group stopped, and they heard muffled voices coming from behind thick bushes to their left.
"I'm telling you, Omie, the ugly one's a werewolf," a grumpy voice said. "And the white-haired woman's a witch."
"Should we execute them then, Zipper?" Another tiny voice asked.
"Let us not stray from our mission. We kill the dragons first, and then we gather the gold, regroup and figure out how to get rid of these people," a different voice suggested.
Zander's nose went to work. He smelt fear, trickery but most importantly, vengeance.
He strutted over to the bush and with his fingers, he parted it, revealing three tiny creatures.
