???'s POV
Even the clouds that were now in view with the rising sun seemed like it was plucked out from a painting of a perfect picnic day. The Lacy white-edged clouds were like puffs of white magic as they rolled in over acres of blue sky.
It didn't take our heroes long to arrive at the bottom of the summit.
The green carpeted forest began to fade as the ground became dry and chalky. Their eyes noticed the mountain. It seemed like any other mountain, with sides that were covered with old-growth forests and the farmland below was fertile, but lay against the bright blue sky was a craggy volcano that seemed like it had been simmering for ages. The white wisps rose from the top like the fumes from a burning chimney that was giving away the location of a lonesome cottage hidden away deep in the woods.
"Of course, the dragons live up there," Hazel spoke with sarcasm. Julia was loving it, though she had always had a fascination with volcanoes and volcanic activities.
"James and I will scale the loose rocky screes to the crater and see if we can see anything, then we'll give you guys a signal if the coast is clear," Zander explained his plan to them.
The others watched the two werewolves climb to the top of the volcano. Hazel whispered words of prayer for them to be careful.
James made it to the top first. His senses heightened as he picked up on a few things.
Zander threw his leg up, pulling himself over the cliff and onto the flat opening of the cave.
The rock around the crater was ruched like a ball gown, but harder and rougher than the concrete on roads.
Zander coughed, smacking his tongue as the fiery taste in the air lingered in his mouth.
James struggled to catch his breath. The air was as thick as a spongecake, and his wolf almost passed out from the volcanic stench.
A low screening sound registered in Zander's ears and the shadow of a winged creature cast down on them like a rain cloud floating by, blocking the light of the sun.
"James backs to the wall. We want to be as discreet as possible." Zander pointed for them to stay close to the wall in hopes they'd be inconspicuous.
They stayed glued to the wall, unmoving, eyes closed tightly, until the winged creature flicked away. They heard its heavy wings flapping against the strong breeze.
The two men crept along the wall, being as quiet as they could be. The flicker of lit torches shadowed the opening of the cave.
"You think we should go inside?" James sought.
"Is your wolf on the defence?"
"No."
"Mine neither," Zander let out. "So, let's check out the inside before we signal the others."
James and Zander slowly but carefully entered the cave, hiding behind the corner as they spy on the dragons inside.
"Holy Moon Goddess!" Zander whispered under his breath.
Meanwhile, down below, Hazel was detecting Zander's heart rate spiking and figured something must be wrong. She tried mindlinking him, but her brain felt too weak.
"I think they've run into danger," Hazel told the others.
"Everyone, huddle closer," Isis instructed.
Hazel, Julia, and Declan hugged Isis tightly. The witch tapped her foot three times, and the area on which they stood shot up from the earth, like a makeshift elevator. It stopped at the ledge where Zander and James were a moment ago.
Hazel was the first to jump off.
"Luna, you can't–" Declan's sentence faded to silence as he sniffed the air. He caught his Alpha's scent. "They went inside," He declared, hacking at the sour taste the air as now left in his throat.
They rushed towards the entrance out in the open. "We are too exposed," Carson was saying, but his tiny voice got lost in the wind's noise.
At first, they heard a roar like a mountain was being pushed and a big gust of wind came flying at them. The stench of fire and ash permeated the air, attacking Declan's senses some more.
Declan's eyes mimicked saucers as they took in the creature soaring in the sky.
"Dimitri, get yourself and Carson outta here!" Declan warned.
The bat used its feet to pick up the slug, and then he flew against the fighting currents of the wind towards the entrance of the cave.
The dragon flew overhead, flapping its wings, casting a gale-force wind on the group down below.
Its claws were like deadly blades and its tail resembled two hungry alligators, with its sharp edges and thick green scales.
Its eyes flickered like a lizard's as it stared intensely on Julia. Its long neck snapped towards Declan as its eyes zeroed in on him trying to move closer to his Luna.
Without warning the ground under-foot shook as the dragon touched down, perching on the edge of the cliff. It moved so quickly, that it seemed to happen in a blink of an eye.
Isis had a spell in mind that she could use to kill it, but she wouldn't dare use it unless it was absolutely necessary.
The dragon opened its mouth and a sound so undesirable crawled from the back of its throat. The force of the roar caused them to drop to their knees on the hard, cold ground.
Their hands quickly clasp over their ears right as the dragon screamed.
Julia was the first to recover and though the others were still on their knees and in shock, the profile of Julia's face changed. Her eyes were tilted upwards, and her unspoken mouth was in a perfect 'O'.
Julia stood to her feet, gazing mesmerized and the hypnotic creature.
"Don't move," Isis whispered, but Julia didn't take heed. Step after step she strode closer to the dragon.
It tensed, searching Julia's face with its eyes, wondering why she wasn't afraid of it.
Declan and Hazel had blank expressions on their faces, still terrified but shocked about Julia's reaction.
Julia stretched her hand, and the dragon huffed, backing away, not wanting the strange woman to touch it.
