Whispered voices came from right outside the door. It was Rowan's deep voice mixed with another, lighter one I didn't recognize.
I listened hard, trying to catch what they were saying.
"...can't be in there right now..." Rowan growled.
The other guy laughed. "Why not? I didn't know my little brother was already having trouble with his marriage."
Marriage problems? My eyebrows furrowed.
Was this about me? About the situation with Isabelle?
The voices got closer until the door opened. Rowan stood there, lips pressed thin, blocking the entrance.
Behind him was another tall, muscular wolf man with shaggy brown hair and laughing bright green eyes.
"Please, Derek, she's not feeling well. Just leave now," Rowan growled, using his body to block the doorway.
The newcomer, Derek, leaned in with a smirk. "Well, well, if it isn't my little brother's secret omega girlfriend."
He whistled, checking out my baby bump. "Just wanted to meet my new sister-in-law. Well, one of them, besides that annoying Isabelle."
Rowan's muscles tensed even more. "Derek, get out now before I make you."
But Derek wasn't scared. He pushed past his brother and walked right in.
Up close, I could see how they looked alike, both tall and strong with chiseled features. But Derek seemed more relaxed and playful.
"So you're the one who got my little bro into this mess, huh?" Derek grinned at me, not in a mean way.
"I never thought Rowan would go and impregnate an omega after he spent years saying they were nothing but wild animals."
My mouth flew open at Derek's blunt words. Rowan growled and grabbed Derek's shoulder, trying to push him out.
"That's enough, Derek! Leave. Now!" he snapped.
But to my surprise, I found my voice.
"Wait," I said, shaking my head.
"I actually want to hear more about this."
Both brothers stopped and stared at me, confused. Rowan looked annoyed, while Derek seemed happy.
Derek shrugged off Rowan's grip and held his hands up.
"Well, if the pretty omega wants to know, I'm happy to tell her all about what a jerk my little brother can be sometimes."
Rowan started to warn him, "Derek, I swear to the Goddess-" but Derek just laughed it off.
Derek sits down on the bed with a mischievous grin.
"So there we were, just kids back then, and Rowan decides omegas are the lowest of the low..."
For a while, Derek filled me in on story after story of Rowan's past sexist comments and prejudiced beliefs.
My heart ached realizing how deeply rooted those views were, despite his recent apologies.
But Derek's easy humor and playful teasing of his little brother had me giggling despite myself.
It felt so good to laugh after all the drama and stress finally.
Even Rowan seemed to loosen up a little, watching me laugh. A small smile played on his lips.
I was just about to ask Derek for another embarrassing childhood story when the door burst open. Isabelle entered like a storm cloud, her beautiful face contorted in anger.
"What's going on here?" she hissed, her furious eyes darting between the three of us.
"Rowan? Why is there another wolf in your room?"
Derek jumped off the bed, his smile still charming. "Ah, little sis, you look even more stunning than usual, if that's possible."
Isabelle looked like she wanted to murder him for his cheesy compliment.
"Don't call me 'little sis,' you filthy rogue! Get out before I call the whole Mondragon guard force."
Something in her icy voice seemed to hit a nerve with Derek. His smile vanished and he stood up straight, his green eyes flashing with anger.
"You always were blind to what our pack calls 'filthy,' weren't you, princess?" he spat out the word like an insult.
"Hold on a second, princess," Derek said, walking around her.
"I wasn't exactly living a rogue's life. Just enjoying the crazy, free stuff humans do for a while," he winked.
"Before I get stuck in that old pack mansion forever."
He stopped back in front of her, a playful challenge in his eyes. "...And why are you kicking me out of MY hotel? I might not be a tough alpha like my brother, but I'm still a Magnus, Ms. Mondragon."
Isabelle scoffed. "You haven't been part of the family for years, Derek. You chose to chase human girls and gamble over your pack duties. Now you show up smelling of cheap alcohol and trouble, expecting a warm welcome?"
"Trouble?" Derek chuckled, a dangerous tone in his laugh.
"Maybe. But don't be so quick to judge, little sis. Sometimes a bit of trouble is just what an uptight princess needs."
"Don't you dare call me that again!" Isabelle snarled, her claws flashing.
"And don't think for a second I'm scared of you. You're still just a stray dog in my territory."
Derek raised an eyebrow, completely calm despite her threat. "A stray dog, huh? Maybe. But even strays have teeth, princess. And sometimes they bite."
The air crackled with tension, thick with unspoken threats. Isabelle locked eyes with him, her anger barely contained. This wasn't some random wolf she could easily push around.
"Maybe if you opened your eyes once in a while, you'd see-"
"Enough!" Rowan's voice boomed like an alpha giving a command, making me jump.
"Derek, we're leaving. Now."
"But bro, I was just getting to the good part!" Derek protested, his playful mood gone.
"Don't you want your omega to hear about that time you-"
Whatever Derek was about to say was cut short. Rowan grabbed his arm and, using his bigger size, practically dragged him towards the door.
Derek shot me one last wink before disappearing into the hallway.
Isabelle watched them leave, pure fury burning in her eyes. Then, she turned to me, her voice dripping with venom.
"Did you find that whole scene amusing, omega?" she spat the word like an insult.
"Just wait until I deal with all your protectors. Then we'll see who laughs last."
