Catrina’s POV:
The Mondragon mansion was quiet. Really quiet. I could hear the clock ticking in the hallway and Lucas’s soft breaths from his crib.
Moonlight streamed through the window, making our room look all silvery and shadowy.
It had been a crazy day. King Alaric, seeing my parents again, learning the truth about their past… It felt like my whole world had been shaken up.
But at least Rowan believes them. He trusts them.
That thought warmed me, chasing away some of the worry I’d been carrying.
Rowan might be having a hard time being Alpha, but he was still the same good, loyal wolf I fell in love with.
Rowan came out of the bathroom, a towel around his hips. Water dripped from his hair and chest.
He looked so strong, so handsome.
Even after everything, just seeing him made my heart beat faster.
“My mate,” my wolf purred, her gaze lingering on his muscles, the power in his stance.
“Lucas is out cold,” Rowan said, nodding towards the crib. “But he’s got a good set of lungs on him, that’s for sure. He definitely wasn’t happy when we tried to sneak a snack.”
I laughed, remembering how Lucas had wailed when we tried to steal a few kisses in the kitchen. “He’s got your stubbornness, that’s for sure.”
Rowan grinned, a flash of the old Rowan, the one I loved so much. He sat down on the bed and leaned down to kiss my forehead.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, his voice soft and full of concern.
“Tired,” I admitted, snuggling into the pillows. “But good. Really good.”
I hesitated. There was something I needed to ask, something that had been worrying me.
“Rowan… about my parents… are you really sure it’s okay for them to stay here? At the Mondragon packhouse?”
He looked at me, his eyes serious. “It’s more than okay, Catrina. It’s important. They’re family. And the pack needs them right now.”
“But what about Isabelle?” I asked. “She didn't seem too happy about them being here.”
“Isabelle will be fine,” Rowan said. He sounded so confident, it surprised me.
“She’s smart. She knows the pack needs to heal, to move on from everything that happened. Your parents… they prove that Marcus’s way wasn’t the only way. That there’s more than one way to be strong.”
“I hope you’re right,” I whispered, tracing the lines of his hand with my finger.
“But what about us? What about the Magnus pack? Where do we belong in all of this?”
He took a deep breath, looking out the window at the moon. “When things calm down, we’ll go back to the Magnus packhouse. It’s our home, Catrina. It’s where Lucas belongs.”
Home. The word felt good.
The Magnus packhouse… even with all the bad memories, It was Rowan’s home, where our pack, our family, would be strongest.
“I’m not in a rush,” I said, squeezing his hand. “Isabelle has been really kind to let us stay here. I’m grateful for her help.”
To be honest, I’m not sure I’m ready to face the Magnus elders yet, my wolf admitted, her voice a little shaky.
She just wanted to protect her mate, her pup, from all the negativity.
“I know,” Rowan said, his thumb stroking my hand. His touch was comforting.
“We’ll go when it’s right. For now, we need to focus on the hotel. We need to rebuild it, make it a welcoming place. A safe place for our pack, and for any wolf who needs a home.”
His words made me feel warm inside. It was like a spark of hope. A safe place for our pack… That was exactly what we needed.
“The hotel… it’s a good idea,” I said, my voice stronger now.
“A new beginning. A symbol of the new Magnus pack.”
“Exactly,” Rowan said, a slow smile spreading across his face.
“A place where everyone is welcome—omegas, even rogues. A place where everyone has a purpose, where their strengths are valued.”
He really understands, my wolf sighed happily.
I moved closer to him, wanting to be near him, to smell his scent, to feel his warmth.
“I love you, Rowan,” I whispered, my fingers tracing the line of his jaw. His rough stubble felt good against my skin.
“I love you too, Catrina,” he murmured, his amber eyes locking with mine.
I felt a spark, a jolt of electricity, run through me. It was our mate bond, strong and powerful.
I leaned in, our lips brushing. His scent filled my senses.
His hand cupped my cheek, his thumb stroking my skin.
The spark between us flared, and a delicious warmth spread through my body.
It’s been so long… my wolf purred, her whole body buzzing with longing.
Since Lucas was born, everything had been a blur—sleepless nights, diaper changes, constant worry. It felt like there was no time for anything else, no time for us.
But now, as Rowan kissed me, the world faded away.
All I could feel was his touch, his taste, the deep connection between our wolves.
Finally… my wolf sighed, completely lost in the sensation.
His hands moved over my body, his touch hungry and possessive. I arched into him, my fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer.
More… my wolf whimpered. I wanted him closer, closer.
But just as Rowan’s hand slipped under my nightgown, sending shivers down my spine, a sharp cry pierced the quiet.
Lucas.
Our son’s cries, loud and demanding, pulled me back to reality.
The fire of our mate bond dimmed, replaced by the fierce urge to protect my pup.
“Duty calls,” I sighed, pulling away from Rowan.
He groaned, his wolf growling in frustration. “That little guy has the worst timing,” he grumbled.
But I could see the smile in his eyes as I got out of bed and went to the crib.
I picked up Lucas, his tiny body warm and squirmy in my arms. He quieted down right away, his amber eyes staring up at me. He was so trusting, so innocent.
My baby, I thought, my heart overflowing with love.
I glanced back at Rowan. He was watching us, his gaze warm and full of longing.
We’ll try again later, my wolf purred, already planning how to get him alone when Lucas was asleep.
For now, our son needed us. I sat in the rocking chair, holding Lucas close, and a smile touched my lips.
Being an Alpha’s mate, a new mother… It was definitely complicated.
But it was also filled with a love so deep, so powerful, that it made all the challenges, all the sacrifices, worth it.
