Carson’s POV:
Isabelle paced like a caged tigress, her anger a living thing, crackling in the air.
She was a force of nature, my Alpha. Beautiful and fierce.
Watching her like this, cornered and vulnerable, brought out a protectiveness in me I hadn’t felt in years.
I’d do anything to shield her from this pain.
The words tumbled out before I could stop them.
"If you really don't want to have pups with Rowan, there's another way, Alpha."
She stopped pacing, her eyes narrowing. "And what, Beta Carson, is this brilliant solution of yours?"
My heart pounded against my ribs, but I kept my voice steady. "I can give you an heir, Alpha. One with the strength of the Mondragon bloodline. One that will secure our pack's future."
“Have you gone crazy, Carson?”
She whirled around, her eyes blazing with fury.
I met her gaze, my wolf standing strong. I knew it was a crazy idea, maybe even insane. But sometimes, you have to do crazy things.
“Alpha,” I said, my voice calm. “I believe this is the best option. It’s the only option.”
She started pacing again, her frustration rolling off her in waves.
She was a magnificent creature, my Alpha. Strong, smart, and beautiful.
But even the strongest wolf can be trapped, cornered by duty and tradition.
King Alaric wanted an heir, a pup to tie our packs together. He wouldn’t back down. And Isabelle had very few choices left.
But I can give her a way out.
Even if it meant crossing lines, breaking all the unspoken rules.
“An heir?” she scoffed, stopping suddenly. Her hands were clenched into fists.
“You think a pup, even one with Mondragon blood, will satisfy that arrogant, power-hungry king? He wants a symbol, a guarantee. He wants Rowan’s pup, not yours.”
“I know, Alpha,” I said, my voice even.
“But Rowan… he’s not doing well. He’s haunted by what happened, by his responsibilities. He already became a father but… not the way King Alaric wants.”
I saw a flicker of understanding in her eyes.
“And you think you have the solution?” she asked.
There was skepticism in her voice, but also a hint of curiosity.
I took a deep breath. My wolf was restless, pacing inside me.
This was dangerous territory. But I had to do it.
My loyalty to Isabelle was absolute. I would do anything to protect her, to ease her burden.
“I can give you a strong pup, Alpha,” I said, my voice firm.
A pup with Mondragon blood. A pup with our strength, our loyalty. A pup that will secure our pack’s future.”
She raised an eyebrow, a wry smile touching her lips. “And why would I accept such a… unconventional offer, Beta?”
I held her gaze, letting my wolf speak for me. He met her gaze, a silent conversation passing between them.
She needs this. And you… you need her.
I shoved down the wave of longing that surged through me. The thought of her scent, her touch, the power of her Alpha aura… it was intoxicating.
But this wasn’t about my desires. This was about duty, about protecting the Mondragon pack.
Isabelle turned away, staring out the moonlit window. Her expression was unreadable.
My heart pounded as the silence stretched on, thick with tension.
Finally, she spoke. “Carson… why are you so willing to do this? What’s your motivation?”
Her voice was quiet, almost hesitant.
How could I explain the complex mix of emotions I felt for her? The loyalty, the admiration, the… love?
How could I tell her that I’d do anything for her, that her happiness was more important than my own?
“You are my Alpha,” I said simply, my voice rough.
“Your needs… the needs of the pack… they come before mine.”
She turned back to me, her eyes searching mine. “Is that all, Carson?”
I took a step closer, drawn to her like a moth to a flame. My wolf strained against his leash, desperate to close the distance between us.
“You know me, Alpha,” I said, my voice husky.
“I’m loyal. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you, to serve the pack.”
“And you think this… this arrangement… will protect me?” she asked, a flicker of amusement in her eyes.
“It will give you what you need, Alpha,” I said, my voice stronger now.
“King Alaric can’t argue with a Mondragon heir. He’ll have to back down, to respect you.”
She considered my words, her face a mask of conflicting emotions.
Then, she sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly.
“You’re a bold one, Carson,” she said, a wry smile touching her lips.
“Maybe even a fool. But… you’re loyal. You’re resourceful. And you understand the pack.”
She stepped closer, and her scent—lavender, vanilla, and something uniquely her—filled my senses, making me dizzy.
She’s going to say yes, my wolf howled, hope flaring inside me.
But instead, she shook her head, a sad smile on her lips.
"Carson, you deserve a mate who can give you what you truly desire. Someone who can love you back, build a real family with you and I can't do that."
Disappointment crashed through me. But even stronger was the admiration I felt for her. She was putting my needs before her own, even when she was under so much pressure.
"But, Alpha..."
She held up a hand, silencing me. "I've made up my mind, Carson. I won't use you like this. You deserve better."
"If King Alaric wants to break our alliance, then let him," she continued, her voice stronger now, but edged with despair.
“I won’t be humiliated, treated like a bloodmare to satisfy him."
A single tear escaped, tracing a path down her cheek. The sight of her vulnerability, so rare and unexpected, pierced my heart.
She’s carrying so much pain, my wolf whimpered.
I wanted to comfort her, to hold her close and protect her from everything. But I knew my place.
I was her Beta, her protector, not her lover.
"If that’s your decision, Alpha," I said, bowing my head. “I’ll stand by you. Always.”
A ghost of a smile touched her lips, and I saw a glimmer of her strength return.
“I know you will, Carson,” she said. Her voice was firm again. “You always have. And for that… I’m grateful.”
I left her office, my heart heavy. Disappointment warred with relief.
And beneath it all, a deep, abiding love for my Alpha. It wasn't about mating, not really.
It was about loyalty, about protection, about a bond that went beyond anything physical.
I would stand by Isabelle.
I would fight for her, protect her, even if it meant watching from afar, my heart aching with a desire I would never fulfill.
Because she was my Alpha. And her safety, the safety of the Mondragon pack, would always come before my own...
