Emma POV:
“He’s the key, Emma. To everything.”
Damien’s voice, low and smooth, sent chills down my spine.
I huddled in the shadows, my heart pounding, watching as he moved around the room.
The air was thick with the scent of incense and something metallic, something that made my stomach churn.
I never thought I’d miss college. All those boring classes, those stupid parties…
But compared to this, to the dark world Damien had dragged me into, college felt like a safe, happy dream.
What have I gotten myself into?
The question kept echoing in my head, a constant reminder of my stupidity.
I’d been so blinded by my jealousy, by my hurt over Rowan, that I hadn’t seen the warning signs, the danger.
I was so stupid. So, so stupid.
Shame washed over me, a bitter taste in my mouth.
Damien had promised me revenge.
He’d promised to make Rowan pay for choosing Catrina over me, for breaking my heart.
And I, like a fool, had believed him.
”You’re amazing, Emma,”
Rowan had said, his eyes sparkling as he tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
“You’re the smartest, most beautiful girl in school. You can do anything you set your mind to.”
We were at a football game, huddled under a thin blanket, the crisp autumn air biting at our cheeks.
I’d just gotten accepted into my dream college, a prestigious university miles away from our small town, a world away from everything I’d ever known.
”But what about us, Rowan?” I’d asked, my voice trembling with a fear I couldn’t quite name.
He’d squeezed my hand, his touch warm and reassuring.
”We’ll make it work, Emma,” he’d promised.
“Distance means nothing when you love someone. We’ll visit each other, talk every day… we’ll be fine.”
But we weren’t fine. He never contacted me again…
The distance stretched between us, a chasm that grew wider with every passing week, every unanswered phone call, every whispered rumor of a life I was no longer a part of.
Damien told me to lure Catrina to the mall, to take her baby.
He said it was part of a plan, something important. But he never really explained what it was all for.
He just kept talking about power, about revenge, about how I would be a queen, how Rowan would beg for my forgiveness.
But now, watching him, a shiver of fear ran through me. He was standing in the flickering light of a thousand candles, chanting in some weird language.
The air smelled of blood and something ancient, something powerful. He was performing a ritual, a ceremony with strange symbols carved into the floor.
And in his hands, he held a small, white rabbit. It was whimpering, its fur stained red.
What are you doing, Damien?
I wanted to scream. I wanted to run away, to undo everything, to give the baby back to Catrina.
But fear, cold and paralyzing, held me back.
Damien was powerful, more powerful than I could have imagined. I could feel his energy, like a heavy weight pressing down on me.
He looked up, his crimson eyes, glowing like embers, met mine.
I felt a jolt of primal fear, a terror that went straight to my core.
It was like he could see right through me, see all my doubts and fears.
“Don’t be afraid, Emma,” he said, his voice smooth and soothing, but with an undercurrent that made me uneasy.
“This is just the beginning. This will change everything. For you. For me. For the world.”
“But the baby… Lucas…” I stammered, my voice shaking.
“What are you going to do to him? He’s just a baby!”
“He’s much more than that, Emma,”
Damien said, his voice filled with an almost fanatical reverence.
“He’s the key. The bridge between worlds.”
“I… I don’t understand,” I whispered, my head spinning.
His words were confusing, like a puzzle I couldn’t solve.
“You will understand, Emma,” he promised, a predatory smile on his lips.
“In time. Just trust me. Obey me. And I will give you everything you desire. Power. Revenge. Love.”
His words were like a siren song, pulling me in, drowning out the voice of reason.
But deep down, a tiny part of me, the girl who had loved Rowan, the girl who still had a heart, whispered a warning.
Don’t trust him, Emma. He’s using you. He’s dangerous.
I wanted to listen to that voice, to run and escape.
But the fear, the guilt of what I’d done, the allure of his promises… they were too strong. I was trapped.
“Where is he, Damien?” I asked, my voice a tiny thread of sound. “Where’s Lucas?”
He chuckled, a low sound that echoed in the large room.
“He’s safe, Emma. He’s being… prepared. For his role in our plan.”
“Prepared?” The word tasted like ash in my mouth.
A shiver of fear ran down my spine. “What does that mean? What are you doing to him?”
“He’s being… attuned, Emma,” Damien said, his voice smooth and hypnotic.
“His bloodline… it’s very powerful. He’s the perfect… tool… for the ancient magic we’re going to unleash.”
“What magic?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“Tell me what you’re planning. What do you want with the baby?”
“Patience, Emma,” he said, his eyes flashing.
“You’ll understand soon enough. Just trust me. For now, you need to focus on your own… training.”
He pointed to a table covered with strange objects – herbs, crystals, bottles filled with shimmering liquids, and a small, silver knife.
“These are tools, Emma,” he said, his voice like velvet.
“Tools to unlock your potential, to awaken the power inside you. The power to control, to command, to conquer.”
“Power?” I echoed. It was a word that both scared and excited me.
I could make the pain go away, the emptiness Rowan had left behind. Maybe with power, I could make him regret his choice.
“Yes, Emma. Power,” Damien purred.
“The power to make Rowan pay, to make him kneel before you, begging for your forgiveness. The power to change the world, to make everyone who hurt you pay.”
His words were tempting, seductive.
He was offering me everything I’d ever wanted—revenge, power, even love.
But deep down, I knew it was all a lie. A dangerous, twisted lie.
I reached for the silver knife. It felt cold and heavy in my hand.
What am I doing? A voice whispered in my head, full of fear.
But it was too late. Damien had a hold of me, and I didn't know how to break free.
He was drawing me deeper and deeper into his web of darkness, and I was too weak, too hurt, to resist.
I’ve made a terrible mistake, I realized, my heart sinking.
But how do I fix it?
How do I escape this nightmare?
