                    Catrina POV:
“Do you remember, Catrina?”
Damien’s voice, a silken whisper, sent shivers down my spine. His red eyes, burning like embers, held me captive, their gaze pulling me deeper into the swirling mists of this strange, shadowy world.
“What is this?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. I felt cold, lost. The memory of why I was here, of my son, was fading.
The air shimmered, and a scene formed in the swirling shadows, a scene that made my heart ache.
I saw myself, but… different. Not the plain, awkward me, but a princess, beautiful and powerful, my wolf beside me, strong and graceful.
Standing with me was a young man, his eyes blue as the summer sky, his spirit wild and free.
I knew him. It was Rowan, but not the Rowan I knew.
This Rowan was younger, wilder, his laughter echoing through the forest. His touch sent a fire through me, a longing that felt ancient, like I’d known him forever.
“Who is he?” my wolf whimpered, confused. “Why do I feel this ache in my heart? Why does it feel like… I’ve known him for a thousand years?”
“Vivian, what’s happening?” I whispered, turning to my guide. Her form shimmered in the strange twilight, her green eyes full of worry.
“He’s showing you the past, Catrina,” Vivian said sadly. “But it’s a twisted past, a past he’s changed to suit his own purposes.”
“He’s trying to confuse you, Catrina. To make you doubt everything you know, everything you feel.”
“But… it feels so real,” I protested, my gaze drawn back to the vision, to the young Rowan. He was smiling, his hand reaching out to touch my cheek. It felt like a love so pure, so intense, it made my heart ache.
“It’s a memory, Catrina,” Vivian said gently. “A memory from another life. But it’s not your memory. It belongs to… someone else.”
“Someone else?” I echoed, confused. “Who?”
“Lyra,” Vivian whispered, sadness lacing her voice. “Damien’s mate. The she-wolf he lost centuries ago.”
I gasped. The pieces clicked into place. Damien’s obsession with me, his need for my power… it wasn’t about me. It was about Lyra. He thought her soul was inside me now.
“But… I’m Catrina,” I whispered, my voice trembling. My whole world felt like it was falling apart. “I’m Rowan’s mate. I’m Lucas’s mother. I’m…”
“You are all of those things, Catrina,” Vivian said, her voice firm, reassuring. “But you also carry a piece of another soul, another life. Lyra’s essence is a part of you, a reminder of her past, her love, her pain.”
“Damien wants to use you, Catrina,” she continued, her voice urgent now. “He wants to tap into Lyra’s power, her connection to the ancient magic. He wants to control you, to make you his puppet.”
“I won’t let him, Vivian,” I said, a new strength hardening my voice. “I won’t let him use me. I’m not Lyra. I’m Catrina. And I’m going to fight him. I’m going to save Lucas. And I’m going to protect Rowan.”
We are strong, Catrina. My wolf growled, her voice full of defiance. We won’t let him break us. We’ll fight him. For our mate, for our pup, for our life.
I turned to face Damien, my fear replaced by a burning anger. A mother’s fury. I loved my mate, my son, my pack. And that love was stronger than anything Damien could throw at me.
“You’re wrong, Damien,” I said. My voice rang with a power I hadn’t known I possessed. “I’m not Lyra. I’m Catrina. And I won’t be your puppet. I won’t let you use me. I won’t let you hurt my family.”
Damien’s smile faltered, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. His red eyes narrowed. He sensed a challenge, a shift in power.
“You’re playing a dangerous game, Catrina,” he warned, his voice a low growl that shook the whole realm. “You dare defy me? You reject your destiny?”
“I make my own destiny, Damien,” I retorted, my voice hard. “And my destiny is with Rowan, with Lucas, with my pack. Not with you. Not with… Lyra.”
“You can’t escape her, Catrina,” Damien said, his voice a silken whisper, like a snake slithering into my mind. “She’s a part of you. And I can awaken her. I can bring her back. It’s only a matter of time before she remembers… before she chooses me.”
He stepped closer, his presence looming, his scent a mix of incense and decay. It was a reminder of the darkness that clung to him, the power he held.
“Give me the pup, Catrina,” he said, his voice softer now, but his eyes still held a dangerous gleam. “Give me Lucas. And I will awaken Lyra. You’ll be together again. The three of you. Just like it was meant to be.”
He held out his hand. Lucas was still in his arms, my son’s small body limp, his face pale. Fear, sharp and primal, stabbed at me, but I pushed it down. I focused on the anger, the love, the need to protect my child.
“You’re lying, Damien,” I said, my voice strong. “You don’t care about Lyra. You just want her power. You want to use her, just like you want to use me, just like you want to use my son.”
“You’re wrong, Catrina,” Damien growled, his eyes blazing with a fury that was both terrifying and… sad. “I loved her. I love her. And I will do anything to bring her back, to reclaim what was stolen from me.”
“She didn’t love you, Damien,” Vivian’s voice rang out, clear as a bell. She stepped forward, her form shimmering, her presence a calming force against Damien’s darkness.
“You obsessed over her, controlled her. You tried to force her to love you. But her heart never belonged to you.”
Damien’s gaze snapped towards Vivian, his eyes burning with rage.
“You dare interfere, Vivian?” he snarled, his voice like thunder. “You betrayed your kind! You chose mortals over us! You abandoned your duty to protect the ancient magic!”
“I chose love, Damien,” Vivian said, her voice calm and steady. “A love that you, with your hunger for power, could never understand.”
“And Lyra chose love, too, Damien,” I said, my voice stronger now, emboldened by Vivian’s presence. “She chose a different path. And so will I.”
I looked at Damien, fear gone from my eyes, replaced by determination.
“I am Catrina,” I said, my voice ringing with power. “And I will not be controlled. I will not be used. And I will not let you hurt my family.”
We faced each other, the air crackling with tension, with magic, with the force of my love for my son. The battle for Lucas, for my soul, for my very being, had begun.
