Rowan POV:
“Love is weakness. Distraction. Power is the only truth.”
Damien’s words were like venom, challenging everything I believed in. His magic slammed into me again, throwing me against a stone pillar.
The impact rattled my bones, and my vision blurred. I tasted blood.
“He’s strong, Rowan. Stronger than we thought.” My wolf growled, his voice a rumble of pain. “We have to be smart. We can’t beat him with just brute force.”
“You can’t win, sorcerer,” I snarled, pushing myself to my feet.
My body ached, but my wolf was snarling, his eyes blazing with fury. I could hear Catrina’s cries, Lucas’s whimpers, and it fueled my rage.
“My bond with Catrina is stronger than any magic you have.”
Damien laughed, a harsh, grating sound.
“We’ll see about that, Alpha,” he taunted, his crimson eyes gleaming.
He raised his hand, his fingers curled into a claw, and Lucas cried out. The sound ripped through my heart. I lunged for him, my wolf desperate to protect our pup, to tear Damien apart.
But Damien’s magic stopped me. An invisible wall of energy, crackling with power, held me back. My muscles screamed in protest.
“Think, Rowan! Think!” My wolf’s voice was urgent. His magic… it’s coming from somewhere.
Find the source. Break the connection. Then we can beat him.
I stumbled back, my eyes searching the chamber for the source of Damien’s power. The air was thick with it, a dark energy that pulsed with ancient malice.
“It’s everywhere! We’re trapped!” My wolf whimpered.
But just as despair threatened to take over, I remembered the lessons I’d learned from the Drakhor Clan.
They’d taught me how to control my wolf, to channel his power, to find peace in the chaos.
Focus, Rowan. Remember. Control the rage. Channel the energy. Be the calm in the storm.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. The smells of incense, decay, and fear were overpowering.
But beneath it all, I could smell something else, faint but familiar. Lavender and vanilla, with a hint of wild magic. Catrina.
“She’s here. She’s fighting.” My wolf growled, his fear fading, replaced by a fierce protectiveness.
I focused on her scent, on the memory of her touch, her love. It was a lifeline, pulling me back from the darkness. The chaos inside me started to calm, the rage turning into a focused energy, a silver light that pushed back against the shadows.
I opened my eyes and met Damien’s gaze. My wolf stood tall, his amber eyes glowing with strength.
“You underestimate me, Damien,” I said, my voice steady.
I could feel my wolf’s power flowing through me, a current of silver energy that crackled in the air.
“Love isn’t weakness. It’s my strength. It’s where my power comes from. And you can’t use it against me.”
Damien sneered, but for a moment, I saw a flicker of doubt in his eyes.
Uncertainty. Maybe even… fear?
But he quickly masked it with his usual arrogance.
“You foolish Alpha,” he scoffed.
“Clinging to sentimentality. To a bond that will betray you. Power is the only truth. And my power… is beyond your comprehension.”
He raised his hand again. Lucas cried out, his tiny face twisted with fear. And in that instant, as Damien focused on Lucas, his concentration wavered.
I saw it – a crack in his armor, a moment of vulnerability.
“Now, Rowan! Strike!” My wolf roared.
I didn’t hesitate. I poured all my rage, my love, my desperation, into a single blast of energy. A shield of silver light slammed into Damien’s magical barrier.
The impact boomed through the chamber, sending me staggering back.
But the barrier shattered. The connection broke. Damien stumbled, his eyes wide with surprise.
He was afraid. I’d never thought I’d see fear in this powerful sorcerer’s eyes.
“What…?” he gasped, looking around frantically.
I didn’t give him a chance to recover. I lunged at him, my wolf a blur of brown fur and fangs.
I slammed into him, and we both crashed to the ground, a tangle of limbs and snarls. The air reeked of ozone, the smell of magic colliding.
We fought, our wolves mirroring our struggle.
But I was stronger now, fueled by a righteous anger, a love that burned brighter than any magic.
I punched him, my fist connecting with his jaw.
I heard a satisfying crunch of bone, and Damien roared in pain. I could see the fear in his eyes now.
“We can beat him, Rowan! He’s not as strong as he thinks!” My wolf snarled, his claws digging into Damien’s flesh.
“It’s over, Damien,” I growled, my amber eyes locking with his. “You’ve lost. Let Lucas go. Let Catrina go. And get out of our lives forever.”
Damien struggled, but his magic flickered, his power weakening. The shadows that clung to him receded, and for a moment, I saw a glimpse of the wolf he once was.
A creature of both beauty and terror, now broken and defeated.
“He loved her, too.” My wolf acknowledged a flicker of understanding in his voice. But his love twisted him, consumed him.
I felt a pang of sadness for Damien, for the loss that had driven him to this. But my need to protect my own family was stronger.
“Don’t make me kill you, Damien,” I growled, my voice low and dangerous. “It wouldn’t be the first time a Magnus Alpha has put down a wolf.”
He glared at me, his eyes full of hatred. But I could see the defeat in his posture, the realization that he’d lost.
He looked down at Lucas, and for a moment, I saw something flicker in his eyes.
Regret? Longing? A glimpse of the father he could have been?
But before I could do anything i saw the flicker of the man that i believe i could never saw again.
The one that left the darkness consumed him all together.
The former Magnus Alpha.
My father…
